Effect of alcohol solvent in mixing process on the microstructure and sintering behavior of ceramic-based composites was investigated in detail. The mixture of fine ceramic powders was prepared through the conventional ball-milling method with various alcohol media. The particle distributions of fine ceramic powders were strongly dependent on the kind of alcohol employed during ball-milling. Ceramic-based composites were fabricated by hot-pressing the mixture of fine ceramic powders. Their microstructures and some mechanical properties of the ceramic-based composites were evaluated. It was found that the viscosity of alcohol, surface tension and contact angle greatly affect the sinterability and some of the mechanical properties of ceramic-based composites.

Various zeolites were synthesized though hydrothermal treatment of perlite with alkaline solutions in order to facilitate effective use of the discarded perlite. Perlite is volcanic glass mainly composed of amorphous aluminum silicate and its composition is a main component SiO2 and Al2O3 with less impurities such as heavy metals. Therefore, zeolite synthesis from perlite is more convenient compared to from other waste materials (slag, ash, etc.). The obtained zeolites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and SEM. As the result, FAU, PHI, SOD and CAN zeolites were able to be generated from perlite by changing the hydrothermal treatment condition.

Hydroxyapatite whisker and platelet were synthesised by the hydrolysis of alpha-tricalcium phoshate (α-TCP) in H2O system and etanol/H2O system at 70°C and atmospheric pressure, thus avoiding severe processing condition, such as in hydrothermal synthesis. The hydroxyapatite prepared by this process was analysed by X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy observation. The effect of ethanol addition into H2O on the hydrolysis of α-TCP to hydroxyapatite was also examined. The hydrolysis rate of α-TCP to hydroxyapatite was inhibited in the ethanol/H2O system. It was found that the morphology and the aspect ratio of hydroxyapatite could be controlled by adding ethanol into H2O during the hydrolysis reaction of α-TCP.

We have developed the Ag-Cu-Sn-Ni quaternary brazing filler metal having a low melting point, a high strength and a high ductility. Then, we produced wire saws composed of Ni-coated SUS304 wires, on which diamond abrasives are fixed with this brazing filler metal. We tried to slice the Si ingots using this wire saw. Good results were obtained for the application to the production of silicon wafers for solar cells. Accordingly, we focused on the basic experiments for further performance of the fixed abrasive diamond wire saws, leading to low cost of slicing technique of hard materials such as silicon and sapphire. In particular, we examined wettability, interfacial reaction and joint strength between Ag-Cu-Sn-Ni quaternary brazing filler metal and industrial metal plates such as Cu, Ni or flux coated SUS304.

The development of low melting temperature coating materials for brazing diamonds was attempted for diamonds wire saw for slicing single crystal silicon.The diamonds wire saw was made by brazing diamonds on SUS-304 wire with high strength for the sawing equipments. Since the degradation of SUS-304 wire was generally generated at higher temperature over 600°C, the high performance coating materials, composed of 47.5 wt.%Ag-25.5 wt.%Cu-27.0 wt.%Sn based materials, was developed by addition of Ni into them to improve the brittleness for SUS-304 wire. These results suggested that the coating material of (47.5 wt.%Ag-25.5 wt.%Cu-27.0 wt.%Sn)-1 wt.%Ni was the suitable brazing of the diamonds SUS-304 wire for sawing equipments.
