殯とは、人の死後、埋葬するまでの間、遺体を小屋内に安置したりさらには仮埋葬し、遺族や近親のものが小屋に籠って、諸儀礼を尽して奉仕するわが国古代において普遍的に行なわれた葬制であるが、この殯について従来ほとんど研究されておらず、わずかに民俗学からの研究があるにすぎない。それも甚だ不十分であり、まだまだ考察の余地があるように思われる。それで本稿はまず殯に関する基礎的事実を文献史料から抽出し、そのあと特に天皇を対象とする殯をとりあげ、殯宮儀礼を手がかりにして、皇位継承に焦点を絞りながら、殯を政治史的視角から考察した。Mogari 殯 is the common funeral form in our ancient times that a dead man's body should be ensconced in a hut after his death till burial, or it be provisionally buried with his relatives confined to the hut and serve various rites in behalf of the dead. This form has hardly been investigated except for few unsatisfactory folklore studies. This article is to observe Mogari in the political view-point where succession to the throne should be considered throungh the forms of Mogari especially for the emperors by means of the fundamental facts from some historical resources.
