ディーゼル機關を機關車に應用すれば理論上種々の利益あり、その爲めディーゼル機關を機關車の原動力として採用することが相當古くから研究され來りしも、ディーゼル機關車は今日尚研究時代を脱することを得ざる程度の發達を示し居るに過ぎず、此の原因としては技術上と経濟上との困難を考へられる前者の問題は漸次解決せられ來りしも経濟上の問題の解決は今後に俟つべきものなりとす

The pacific type passenger locometive (type 18900) has been a typical one of locomotives for express trains on the main lines of Japanese Government Railways. In order to meet the requirement for larger tractive power of locomotive, as a result of the introduction or steel cars, causing the increased weight of the train, the three cylinder pacific type locomotive (type C53) has been newly designed, constructed and put in the above mentioned service. In this paper, the writer treats the characteristics and special features in the construction of this new type locomotive.
