This paper presents a new unified analysis of estimate errors by model-matching phase-estimation methods such as rotor-flux state-observers, back EMF state-observers, and back EMF disturbance-observers, for sensorless drive of permanent-magnet synchronous motors. Analytical solutions about estimate errors, whose validity is confirmed by numerical experiments, are rich in universality and applicability. As an example of universality and applicability, a new trajectory-oriented vector control method is proposed, which can realize directly quasi-optimal strategy minimizing total losses with no additional computational loads by simply orienting one of vector-control coordinates to the associated quasi-optimal trajectory. The coordinate orientation rule, which is analytically derived, is surprisingly simple. Consequently the trajectory-oriented vector control method can be applied to a number of conventional vector control systems using one of the model-matching phase-estimation methods.

Almost all methods for sensorless drive of permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which estimate rotor phase using fundamental components of stator voltage and current, cannot operate properly at low speed including standstill. For proper sensorless drive of PMSMs, they must be started and driven up to a certain speed by other methods. This paper proposes a new simple vector control method for a starter, which can start and drive PMSMs from rest up to the 50% rated speed. The proposed vector control method has the following useful features: 1) It is constructed on basis of “MIR strategy" together with feedback current control, and has a new specific stability function preventing rotating oscillation; 2) It can start up PMSMs with less than 50-70% rated load; 3) It can prevent over-current even at very low speed including standstill; 4) It can be applied to both of salient and nonsalient pole PMSMs; 5) It does not require motor parameters of high precision; 6) It is simple and required computational load is very light; 7) It starts up PMSMs with pre-specified maximum current and automatically reduces current amplitude to the necessary minimum; 8) It attains pre-specified ratio of effective/reactive currents at steady state; 9) It can estimate properly rotor phase as well as speed at speed of 10% rating or more. This paper presents the new vector control method in detail from principle and confirms its usefulness by experiments.

This paper proposes new sensorless vector control methods for permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which are based on a new minimum-order back-EMF state-observer taking acceleration into account, and examines potentiality of the improved back-EMF observer through experiments. Conventional sensorless vector control methods for PMSMs using an estimate of back-EMF are established under the assumption of constant speed or zero acceleration, consequently cannot operate properly at modes requiring rapid speed change especially in low speed region. On the other hand, the proposed back-EMF observer has the following features: 1) it is a new back-EMF state-observer taking acceleration into account and requiring no additional approximation to motor mathematical model; 2) it is a minimum order state-observer; 3) it utilizes motor parameters in the simplest manner; 4) it can be applied to both of salient-pole and non-salient-pole PMSMs; 5) it can be realized in both rotor and stator reference frames. Detailed designs and analyses for the improved state-observer and the sensorless vector control systems in both rotor and stator reference frames are given. In relation to the sensorless vector control systems, this paper newly proposes a double-integral type PLL method and an integral-feedback type acceleration/speed estimation method. Their potentialities are examined through experiments.

This paper gives a new analysis about the minimum current under the flux saturation for efficient drive of synchronous reluctance motors. This paper shows that the asymmetric flux saturation of the mirror-phase inductance causes the nonlinear minimum current trajectory, and derives newly the general analytical trajectory and a concrete approximated analytical trajectory.

This paper proposes a new multivariable filter with variable-frequency characteristics for three-phase signal processing. The filter can make distinction between positive and negative frequencies of three-phase signals and can allow us to process the signals based on frequency polarity. The filter can also change dynamically its filtering characteristics by simply injecting a shift-signal to the filter. The filtering effects equivalent to ones by so-called the filters accompanied with vector rotators are obtained, but in much simpler manner. A unified analysis of attractive general characteristics of the multivariable filter is given for its easy designs and realizations as well. Effectiveness of the analysis and usefulness of the filter are examined and confirmed through experiments. The filter has potential to a variety of three-phase signal filtering applications.

This paper proposes new vector controllers in the D-module for controlling current of three-phase systems, which have no vector-rotators in current control loop. Conventional standard vector controller controls current of three-phase systems in rotational reference frame and a couple of vector rotators are indispensable in the loop. Vector rotators that perform sinusoidal operations on current must be realized in discrete-time manner, and sampling of current for the discrete-time processing restricts attainable bandwidth of the current control loop. Broader bandwidth of the loop is desired for both quick response and disturbance suppression. The proposed vector controllers in the D-module are so simple that no vector rotators in the loop are required, and can be realized in continuous-time manner due to its simplicity. Furthermore, under the same bandwidth of the current loop, the proposed one can show the equivalent performance to conventional standard vector controller having vector-rotators in the loop. These features allow broader bandwidth of the loop and better current control performance than the conventional vector controller. Two new vector controllers in the D-module are presented and their usefulness is examined and confirmed through numerical experiments.

This paper proposes online inductance identification methods, including two identification principles, three identification algorithms, and a compensation signal generation method for the sensorless drive of synchronous reluctance motors. The proposed methods have the following features. (a) The identification object is the “in-phase inductance”, which is only required for the “mirror-phase flux estimation”. (b) The inductance can be identified even in the steady state, where the frequency of the signals in the dq synchronous reference frame is substantially zero, and identifications are the most difficult. (c) The superimposition of a special signal, such as an M-sequence signal, is not required for the identification. (d) A compensation signal is essential for making the identified value converge to the true one. A compensation signal generation method that is applicable in the minimum copper loss control is proposed. (e) The identification can be performed, in principle, in the γδ general reference frame but it is practically performed in the αβ stationary reference frame. (f) Recursive calculations are possible, and the amount of calculations required for the identification is very small. This study also verifies the validity of the proposed identification methods with the aforementioned features through extensive numerical experiments.

This paper proposes a new torque-sensorless ripple-reduction torque control method for synchronous reluctance motors, which evolve torque ripples depending on the rotor position by the sinusoidal stator current. The proposed method, which requests the construction of a vector control system with a special command converter, has the following attractive features. (a) The average evolved torque matches its torque command. (b) The torque ripple can be considerably reduced. (c) The current command generated from the torque command is on the trajectory for efficient drives. (d) It is analytical and simple. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through extensive simulations.

Signal processing based on frequency polarity has been attracting wide attentions due to its potential industrial-applications. It is popular to employ two vector-rotators for such signal processing. But, It was very recently reported that equivalent signal processing effect can be attained in a much simpler manner using two-input two-output filters in the D-module. This paper further investigates a class of characteristic-varying systems in the D-module, which contains the filters in the D-module as a special case, and gives new analytical results on their properties from viewpoints of existence, realization and stability. If the results are applied to filter problems, n-th order D-module filters in new forms can be easily and directly obtained, whose stability and response equivalent to the associated filters with vector-rotators are guaranteed. If the results are applied to AC motor modeling problems, dynamic models and block diagrams of AC motors in general reference frame are easily and directly obtained. Very general and useful analyses are given for newly proposed a class of characteristic-varying systems in the D-module that have potential usefulness in various industrial applications including control of magnetic bearing system, analyses and active compensations of power systems, and sensorless drives of AC motors.
