The purpose of this research is to elucidate the mechanism of aerodynamic force generation and control in flapping flight of a mosquito. In this paper, a tenfold enlarged realistic model of the flapping wing was used to simulate the motion of the mosquito's wing and flow pattern around it. Experiments were conducted using a very low speed wind tunnel to coincide the condition of Reynolds and Strouhal numbers with those of real mosquito. The flow field around the wing model was analyzed by a stereo-PIV system. The aerodynamic forces generated by the model wings were calculated by using a momentum conservation law applied to the flow field. In these experiments, two unsteady ring vortexes around model wings were observed. The magnitude and direction of the jet flow induced by the ring vortex were greatly influenced by the attack angle. It was found that the lift was generated during the down-stroke and the thrust during the up-stroke in the real mosquito's flight.

Four different solid phases of tetracycline (trihydrate, anhydrate, dehydrate, and amorphous) were isolated. These phases were characterized by using IR spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses. Dissolution behavior of these phases in distilled water was investigated and an appreciable difference in the dissolution behavior was detected between the amorphous and the other solid phases. The effect of the solid phases on bioavailability of tetracycline was also studied. Blood plasma levels obtained in rabbits and blood levels in rats after intraduodenal administration of the trihydrate and amorphous were compared, and its results indicated that the solubility difference between the two phases has an effect on the bioavailability of tetracycline. The cumulative excretion of tetracyc1ine in urine after oral administration of the two phases to human subjects was also examined and its results indicated that the cumulative amount after administration of the amorphous was slightly higher than that of the trihydrate.

The existence of the two crystalline forms of chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC-HCI) was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. From the dissolution studies with crystalline powder and compressed disk, an appreciable difference in the dissolution behavior in water was detected between the two forms. In order to determine the effect of polymorphism on the gastrointestinal absorption of CTC-HCl, blood plasma levels obtained in rabbits after intraduodenal administration and cumulative amounts excreted in human subjects after oral administration of the two forms were compared. The results indicated that polymorphic state of CTC-HCl significantly influences bioavailability of the CTC-HCl.

Potency determination of kanamycin solution was carried out as follows: To 5cc. of kanamycin solution in water, 0.5cc. of 20% sodium carbonate solution is added, followed by 0.5cc. of 1% solution of sodium 1, 2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate with cooling in ice water, and the mixture is allowed to stand at 0° to 2° for 20 minutes, protected from light. To this solution, 1.0cc. of acetone and 0.5cc. of 50% acetic acid are added and optical density of this solution, is measured at 420 mμ. As a control, the same procedure is carried out with distilled water in place of the sample solution. The potency of the sample solution is read from the calibration curve prepared with kanamycin of known potency. The same determination was carried on samples boiled with acid or alkali, and samples left at various temperatures. Comparison of the values so obtained with the values determined by the cup method, stipulated in the antibiotics standard, showed good agreement.
