Molecular phylogenetic analyses were conducted for Anodonta individuals from Okumikawa, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Mitochondrial DNA sequences of these individuals were nearly identical to those of Buldowskia shadini that occurs from the Amur River basin in Russia, northeastern China, and Mongolia (Buir Lake) to South Korea. This is probably the first record of the species from Japan.

Molecular phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial COI gene sequences showed that Anodonta individuals from Nagoya and Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture and Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture belong to Buldowskia shadini (Moskvicheva, 1973), proposing a new Japanese name “Yahazu-Numagai” for this species. This study raises the possibility that B. shadini individuals in various parts of Japan have been misidentified as Anemina arcaeformis (Heude, 1877) based on shell morphology.
