Molecular phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial COI gene sequences showed that Anodonta individuals from Nagoya and Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture and Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture belong to Buldowskia shadini (Moskvicheva, 1973), proposing a new Japanese name “Yahazu-Numagai” for this species. This study raises the possibility that B. shadini individuals in various parts of Japan have been misidentified as Anemina arcaeformis (Heude, 1877) based on shell morphology.
