The so-called three level inverters have been widely used for industry applications because of high-voltage output ability and low harmonic contents. These applications are mainly suitable for ac motor drives. Nowadays, attention has been paid to larger-capacity inverters applicable to power system control. This paper describes their applications to power systems. First, harmonic analysis of a three-level inverter is achieved under the condition that its two dc capacitor voltages are unbalanced. Second, a control method for balancing the two dc capacitor voltages is described. Finally, applications of single-phase three-level inverters to STATCOM and BTB are introduced. Their control performance is confirmed by computer simulation.

This paper proposes a novel single-phase UPS inverter modulated by Error-Tracking Mode PWM scheme. An ac voltage regulation scheme which matches the PWM scheme is newly developed in a theoretical way. Since Error-tracking Mode PWM is based on constantly-sampled data, the controller is suited to be digitally implemented. The equivalent circuit of the UPS inverter controlled by the schemes is derived. The output impedence is found to be composed mainly of resistance differently from general ac apparatus.<br>According to the newly-developed schemes, a 3kVA, 100V, 50Hz UPS inverter is experimentally fabricated in which the sample period is 10μs and the average switching frequency is 6kHz. No load, linear load and non-linear load characteristics are measured. The output voltage remains almost sinusoidal even for the rated non-linear load. The output impedences are also measured and well agreed with the intended values.

A new PWM method of the three-level inverter using a digital signal processor, which is useful for large capacity instantaneous current controlled GTO inverters is presented.<br>In case of the three-level inverter, short pulses are always necessary to output medium voltage vectors. The output waveform deteriorates from the ideal PWM waveform by the influence of the minimum pulse width limit of the GTO thyristors.<br>In this PWM method, firstly, the switching sequences of voltage vectors which enable the neutral voltage balance control are selected.<br>And then, from these sequences of voltage vectors, sequences which are not affected by the minimum pulse width limit of GTO are selected.<br>Using these switching sequences, the voltage vector mean value control PWM method based on the space-vector control is proposed.
