This paper describes techniques that Japanese power electronics engineers can use to improve the quality of their technical papers written in English and the accompanying technical presentations. These techniques are based on the experience that the author has gained by participating in international conferences. Such techniques are important to discuss because the significant differences exist in writing and presentation styles between Japanese and American engineers. The author believes that such style differences are caused by differences between the Japanese and American cultures. The objective of this paper is to help Japanese engineers understand these cultural differences and improve their technical communication skills in English. The paper also includes some practical tips on writing and presentation techniques for improving the quality of their technical communications in English.

This paper describes a 6.6-kV adjustable-speed motor drive for use in fans, blowers, and pumps without a transformer. The power-conversion system consists of a diode rectifier, a five-level diode-clamped PWM inverter, and a voltage-balancing circuit. A 200-V 5.5-kW downscale model is developed, constructed, and tested. The five-level PWM inverter and the voltage-balancing circuit are studied in detail. Experimental results obtained from testing the 200-V downscale model confirm the viability and effectiveness of the 6.6-kV adjustable-speed motor drive, indicating that the dc mean voltages of the four split dc capacitors are well balanced under all the given operating conditions.

This paper discusses the power flow analysis and dc-capacitor voltage regulation for the modular multilevel cascaded converter (MMCC) based on double-star chopper cells (DSCC). This analysis reveals the relationship between the circulating current through the dc link and the mean power flowing out of or into each chopper cell. The dc component on the circulating current supplies a half of the active output power to the upper and lower strings of chopper cells, whereas the fundamental-frequency component transfers an amount of power between the upper and lower strings. Thus, the MMCC-DSCC can balance the capacitor voltages among the cells by controlling the amplitude of the fundamental-frequency component on the circulating current. A new control method based on the power flow analysis is employed, and its effectiveness is verified by circuit simulation.

This paper describes a vector control system of an induction machine using a neutral-pointclamped voltage source inverter (NPC-VSI) that is one of double series connected inverters.The NPC-VSI is able to output 5 levels step-shaped line to line voltage without output transformers or reactors, and it may reduce harmonic currents corresponding to torque ripples. However, the NPC-VSI has a problem that excessive high voltage is applied to swiching devices when a neutral point of two DC capacitors of the NPC-VSI varies from the center of the DC link voltage, because the neutral point is floating.This paper proposes a current controller to which the space vector theory is applied. This can reduce harmonic currents to 1/4 of those of a conventional voltage source inverter using 6 swiching devices, and regulate the neutral point potential within a preset range. To simplify the current controller, information about voltage space vectors is given from the vector controller to the current controller. Validity of the current controller is confirmed by a prototype using an induction machine of 2.2 kW.

平成6年3月,名古屋市科学館と近くの高層ビルの地下電気室で相次いで発生したリアクトルの爆発事故は,「6.6kV配電系統から流入した高調波電流が原因」との調査結果が報告されている。このような高調波障害は,電力用半導体素子を使用したパワーエレクトロニクス機器の増加に伴って発生件数も年々増加し,現代社会の新たな"公害"として早期対応が迫られている。資源エネルギー庁は,平成6年9月30日付けで「高調波抑制ガイドライン」を電力・家電業界に通達し,高調波障害の解決に向けて大きく前進した。欧米においてもIEC555-1000(欧州)やIEEE519-1992(米国)などの高調波規制が施行されている。交流モータの可変速ドライブシステムや無停電電源(UPS)は,AC/DC電力変換器を必要とする。しかし,電源高調波規制に対応した従来の大容量AC/DC電力変換システムでは,1)スイッチング損失が増加する,2)高調波対策機器の価格が高い,3)良好な高調波抑制効果が得られない,などの問題点がある。本研究は,電源高調波規制に対応した大容量・高効率AC/DC電力変換システムの開発を目的とし,三相ダイオード整流回路と直列形アクティブフィルタを一体化した主回路構成と制御法に特長がある。本研究の成果は,以下のように要約することができる。1.直列形アクティブフィルタの制御法を開発し,その有効性をディジタルシミュレーションにより確認した。特に,制御系の遅延がアクティブフィルタの安定性に及ぼす影響について検討し,遅延の影響の少ない新しい制御法を提案した。2.直列形アクティブフィルタ(2kVA)を設計・製作し,ダイオード整流回路(20kVA)と一体化して,新しい制御法の有効性と高調波抑制効果を実験により確認した。3.スイッチングリプルを抑制するフィルタを設計・製作し,その有効性を実験によって確認した。2000年6月に,これらの研究成果をまとめた論文をIEEE/PESCで発表する予定である。

In general, diode rectifiers with electrolytic capacitors on the DC side have been used as DC power supplies for voltage source inverters. This type of rectifiers, however, causes many problems such as poor power factor and harmonics. Recently, voltage source PWM rectifier-inverters have been studied to provide the following advantages; (1) harmonic-free on both AC sides; ( 2) unity power factor on the input AC side; (3) power flow of either direction or power regeneration; (4) reduction of the DC capacitor. It is, however, difficult for a conventional one to regulate the capacitor voltage on transient states because of having only a voltage feed-back loop.This paper describes a voltage source PWM rectifier-inverter with feed-forward control of instantaneous power. Based on the pq theory, the instantaneous power which is calculated in the control circuit of the inverter is fed forward to the control circuit of the rectifier. The feed-forward control of instantaneous power makes a great contribution to sufficiently suppress voltage fluctuation of the DC capacitor on transient states. Transient characteristics are discussed and some interesting experimental results of a laboratory model are shown.

The so-called three level inverters have been widely used for industry applications because of high-voltage output ability and low harmonic contents. These applications are mainly suitable for ac motor drives. Nowadays, attention has been paid to larger-capacity inverters applicable to power system control. This paper describes their applications to power systems. First, harmonic analysis of a three-level inverter is achieved under the condition that its two dc capacitor voltages are unbalanced. Second, a control method for balancing the two dc capacitor voltages is described. Finally, applications of single-phase three-level inverters to STATCOM and BTB are introduced. Their control performance is confirmed by computer simulation.

A modular multilevel cascade inverter based on double-star chopper cells (MMCI-DSCC) is expected as one of the next-generation multilevel PWM inverters for medium-voltage motor drives. This paper presents theoretical and experimental discussions on a practical speed-sensorless start-up method for an induction motor driven by the MMCI-DSCC from a standstill to a middle speed. This motor drive is suitable, especially for a large-capacity fan- or blower-like load, the torque of which is proportional to a square of the motor mechanical speed. Unlike the so-called &ldquo;volts-per-hertz&rdquo; control, three-phase stator currents are based on &ldquo;feedback&rdquo; control, whereas their amplitude and frequency are based on &ldquo;feedforward&rdquo; control. Although the motor drive has no speed sensor attached to the motor shaft, this method makes a slow start-up stable with the help of a stator current-feedback loop. Experimental results obtained from a 400-V, 15-kW downscaled system verify the stable operating performance from a standstill to a middle speed of 590min<sup>-1</sup> with a 40% load torque.

This paper focuses on a battery energy storage system that can be installed in a 6.6-kV power distribution system. This system comprises a combination of a modular multilevel cascade converter based on single-star bridge-cells (MMCC-SSBC) and multiple battery modules. Each battery module is connected to the dc side of each bridge-cell, where the battery modules are galvanically isolated from each other. Three-phase multilevel line-to-line voltages with extremely low voltage steps on the ac side of the converter help in solving problems related to line harmonic currents and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues. This paper proposes a control method that allows each bridge-cell to independently adjust the battery power flowing into or out of each battery module. A three-phase energy storage system using nine nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) battery modules, each rated at 72V and 5.5Ah, is designed, constructed, and tested to verify the viability and effectiveness of the proposed control method.

This paper deals with the high-frequency leakage current caused by a voltage-source PWM inverter. A nonnegligible amount of leakage current would flow through stray capacitors between stator windings and a motor frame due to a, large step change of the common-mode voltage produced by the PWM inverter. An equivalent circuit for the leakage current is proposed, which is expressed by a series resonant circuit. The analysis applying the equivalent circuit gives us such a conclusion that the connection of a common-mode choke in series between the inverter and motor terminal is not effective to reduce the rms and average value of the leakage current, but effective to reduce the peak value. Furthermore, this paper shows that the modeling and analysis are valid in designing a previously proposed suppression method of the leakage current.

This paper describes an induction heating system of 1kW 450kHz which is developed for dental casting machines. This system consists of a single-phase diode rectifier, a voltage-source inverter using four power MOSFET's, and a series resonant circuit with a matching transformer of turn ratio 8:1. No capacitor is connected on the DC side of the rectifier except for a high frequency capacitor of 0.47 μ F. Thus, the DC voltage across the high frequency capacitor is fluctuating at 100Hz, that is, twice as high as the line frequency of 50Hz as if no capacitor were connected. Not only does the fluctuation have no effect on heating or melting but also the fluctuation plays an essential role in shaping the line current of the rectifier into sinusoid and unity power factor, because it is seen from the DC side of the rectifier that the inverter plus the resonant circuit acts as a pure resistance.The power control covering a wide range from 50W to 1kW is achieved by power factor control of the inverter which takes the place of DC voltage control of the rectifier.The system efficiency is estimated to be 76% by sophisticated measurement of the actual heating power, which is based on Lissajous's figures for voltage and charge.

現在,高エネルギー加速器研究機構が中心になって計画を進めている大型ハドロン計画(JHL : Japan Hadron Facility)の50GeV陽子加速器には55MWの高性能・大容量の電磁石電源が必要となる。この電磁石電源は,電磁石電流が0〜5kA,有効電力が+55MW〜-55MW,周期約4秒で激しく変動する。しかも陽子加速器はひとたび実験に入ると,昼夜を問わず2,3週間の連続運転が行われる。このような連続した激しい電力変動は,周囲の配電系統だけでなく上位の電力系統に種々の障害を引き起こす恐れがあるため,電力変動の抑制を目的とした電力補償装置の設置が必要不可欠となる。本研究では,加速器電磁石電源の電力変動を抑制する交流励磁フライホイール発電機システムの開発を目的としている。具体的には理論解析とコンピュータシミュレーションをベースに,7.5kW実験システムを設計・製作し,交流励磁フライホイール発電機システムの有効性を実証しようとするものである。本研究の成果は,以下のように要約することができる。1.立型フライホイール発電機を設計した。次に,交流励磁用PWMコンバータ・インバータを設計・製作し,7.5kW実験システムの基礎特性を評価した。2.交流励磁フライホイール発電システムの新しい制御法として,交流電動機ベクトル制御と非干渉制御を融合した制御法を開発し,その有効性を実験によって確認した。3.交流励磁フライホイール発電機の直流偏磁現象を実験的に検討し,直流偏磁を抑制する新しい制御法を開発した。さらに,その有効性を実験によって確認した。
