着座した状態でテーブルの周囲から立体映像を観察可能な裸眼立体ディスプレイを新たに提案する.本ディスプレイは,柱体あるいは錐体の光学素子と複数のプロジェクタによって構成される.テーブルトップ作業を阻害しないよう,これらの装置はテーブル面より下方に設置される.プロジェクタ群から発せられる無数の光線は,テーブル中央にあるとする再現しようとする立体物の表面から放たれる光を再構成するように働く.光学素子には指向性のある光学性能が付与され,入射光を水平面では直進させ,鉛直面では拡散させ射出する.これにより,光線群の飛行方向を着座した位置で最適に観察されるよう制御する.すなわち本方式は,観察に適した視域がテーブルの周囲を取り囲む円環状に配置されることを特徴とする.

We propose a novel glasses-free 3D display of 360° optimized for tabletop tasks. The display employs circularly arranged projectors and a cylindrical- or a conical-shaped optical device that has a directional optical characteristic. Those devices are installed underneath the table not to obstruct the working space. One of the novelties of the proposed method is forming a ring-shaped viewing area above the table. When users look in this area, they can observe individual 3D images from each direction with correct perspective on the table such as a centerpiece.

We studied the degree of visual fatigue in subjects watching HDTV stereoscopic images. The images used as visual stimuli contained only absolute, with no relative, parallax. The examination of visual fatigue was carried out with a five-grade subjective evaluation test and measurements of the accommodation response after watching the images for one hour. We found that when they were displayed within the corresponding range of depth of focus and remained static in the depth direction, the degree of visual fatigue was almost the same as that induced by watching the images displayed on the screen. However, visual fatigue was clearly induced, when they were displayed outside the corresponding range. Moreover, even if they were displayed within the corresponding range, visual fatigue was induced if they were moved in depth according to a step pulse function.

Visual fatigue induced by viewing stereoscopic and planar HDTV images for about one hour at a viewing distance of 4.5m was evaluated. Scenes giving rise to particular visual discomfort were identified by continuous subjective evaluation, and the extent of the induced fatigue was estimated using both this and the difference ill accommodation responses before and after viewing the test material. Results suggested that such scenes exercise spatio-temporal frequency limitations of binocular fusion mechanisms, which are more restrictive than comparable limitations for planar moving, images. Moreover, even when. the accommodation mechanism was judged to be operating open-loop, fatigue was clearly evident in the deterioration of the accommodation response. The results showed that in order to create visually comfortable stereoscopic images. it is necessary to consider not only the much-investigated conflict between vergence eye movement and accommodation, but also visual functions concerned with the processing of parallax.
