This paper highlights some challenges for improving Japanese students' intercultural communication skills. Acquiring English communication skills has been the target of English education in Japan for the last 20 years. However, some recent statistic studies show that Japanese people's communication and negotiation skills do not meet the demands of globalized world. This peper emphasizes the importance of understading the way Japanese people behave their favored communication style from the perspectives of their cultural values. This paper aims to clarify the characteristics of Japanese patterns of behavior, utilizing Hofstede's Cultural Dimentions Theory, and suggests some important and influential factors for English teachers to consider in teaching communication skills to Japanese students.
