This study describes the design and practice of job assistance at café H. Job assistance is based on community strength and assists mentally-disturbed individuals who want jobs. Specifically, we considered how job assistance is utilized to support these individuals. We found that to optimize the use of the many volunteers who live in the K station community is to optimize for nonprofit organization to manage caféH on the economic front. In this study, we avoid absolutely defining strength. We attempt to describe the design that supports the available mentally-disturbed individuals who want jobs, which generates something good for them.

Various studies have been conducted to investigate the actual conditions and to verify the interventions that have been made to support the employment of individuals with mental disorders since their job retention and job separation appeared to be problematic. With the aim of finding ways to support people with mental disorders in retaining employment, a literature search including both Japanese and foreign language journals was performed in the Ichushi, CiNii and PubMed databases. The keywords used in the search were mental disorder, schizophrenia, depression, manic-depressive illness, job retention, job separation and retirement. The literature search resulted in 25 articles. Our analysis indicated that schizophrenia, depression, sleep disorders, duration of the disease (long-term), age (young generation), attention disorders, social cognitive impairment, full-time employment, absence of a person that they can consult with at work, etc., may increase the risk of job separation. Employees with a mental disorder who have not disclosed their disability to their employer are likely to have long working hours per day and retain their employment only for a short period of time; they are not receiving training and support before and after starting employment; and they do not feel rewarded at work. It was revealed that Individual Placement and Support (IPS) was effective for job retention and for improving their cognitive function. As a trend of studies in Japan, there have been many investigative research studies on individuals with mental disorders in the workforce, whereas few intervention studies have been conducted.
