砂丘の形成年代は, 砂丘砂層や砂丘間凹地の腐植土, および砂丘の基盤層中に含まれる有機物の年代から決めることができる. 新しい年代値とともに, これまでの多くの年代測定値をまとめて整理し, 越後平野における砂丘の形成年代と形成過程を明らかにした. 約8,000年前に縄文海進とともに海水面が上昇すると, 越後平野の内陸部でラグーンを伴ったバリア島システムが成立した. 約6,000年前の海水準高頂期後, 海水準が安定するか, やや低下すると, 信濃川などの流入河川によって堆積物が豊富に供給され, 沖積平野は急速に拡大した. 海岸砂丘の発達は, 海岸線の前進と停止に呼応して断続的に進み, 10列の砂丘が形成された. 砂丘の形成年代は, 新砂丘I-1が約6,000年前, 新砂丘I-2が6,000~5,500年前, 新砂丘I-3が5,000年前, 新砂丘I-4が約4,500年前, 新砂丘II-1が約4,000年前, 新砂丘II-2が約3,500年前, 新砂丘II-3約3,000年前, 新砂丘II-4が2,000~1,700年前, 新砂丘III-1が1,700~1,100年前, 新砂丘III-2が約1,100年前である.

A geologic profile expresses the geological feature situation in its location clearly and makes the problem on the geological feature clear. It has to be made by considering the topography condition of the place that the stratum was accumulated, sedimentary environment and the sedimentary age. A study of an Alluvium deposit substantially develops from three sides: a decision in a sedimentary age, presumption of sedimentary environment and introduction of a sedimentary facies analysis in recent years. A geologic profile has to be made so that formative process of the ground may be indicated based on recent research achievements about an Alluvium deposit.
