Akiyoshi-dai Limesotne Plateau, distributed in central part of Yamaguchi prefecture, southwestern Japan, is the largest karst plateau in Japan. The Late Paleozoic (Carboniferous and Permian) coral reef complex consists of the Akiyoshi limestone block. More than 440 limestone caves have been developed by the underground water system in this area. Soils and gravels are bedded on the plateau and inside the caves, and some studies on the Karst soils have been made until now. The summary of Akiyoshi-dai is introduced in this paper.

This article reports the distribution of active faults and ground disasters which have caused by earthquakes in Chugoku district. In the district, the occurrence of earthquakes is less frequent than other areas in Japan. However, so far, Tottori Earthquake and Tottori Seibu Earthquake, both of which exceeded magnitude 7.0, hit Tottori prefecture, northern Chugoku region, in 1943 and 2000 respectively. Ground disasters due to the two severe earthquakes are reported herein, such as liquefaction and landslides, after explaining the major active faults distributed in Chugoku district.

The masonry walls of Japanese castles are precious cultural properties, and many people come to sightseeing on the castles. For this reason, in the conservation of their careful consideration is required both preservation of their cultural properties and stability of foundation structure of them is required. From recent studies, it was gradually discovered that Japanese traditional masonry walls are stable for both static and dynamic conditions. For preservation and restoration of them, the appropriate evaluations and measures based on examination of the geotechnical engineering are needed.

A geologic profile expresses the geological feature situation in its location clearly and makes the problem on the geological feature clear. It has to be made by considering the topography condition of the place that the stratum was accumulated, sedimentary environment and the sedimentary age. A study of an Alluvium deposit substantially develops from three sides: a decision in a sedimentary age, presumption of sedimentary environment and introduction of a sedimentary facies analysis in recent years. A geologic profile has to be made so that formative process of the ground may be indicated based on recent research achievements about an Alluvium deposit.

Recently SAR images have been widely adopted for the monitoring of ground surface deformation. InSAR (interferometry SAR) becomes a powerful tool to clarify geological structures and tectonic motions cause of large earthquakes. The InSAR analysis which is centimeters order precision and used two images is convenient to make a quick report for the surface deformation after large earthquakes. On the other hand, PSInSAR technique which uses 20 SAR images or more over realizes millimetric precision in a wide area with a high-density. Especially, it enables to detect the historical deformation of the surface according to used images term. This paper discusses the geological structure and the mechanism of surface deformation for the Noto Hanto Earthquake in 2007 and Mid Niigata prefecture Earthquake in 2004.

Kansai international airport was constructed on reclaimed island 5 km offshore. Water depth around the island is deep and its reclamation layers are very thick. Therefore consolidation settlement had expected not only alluvial clay layers but also diluvial clay layers. Prediction of settlement is necessary to construction and maintenance of Kansai international airport. Important points to solve the problem are as shown below: (1) Construction of geological database, (2) Management of reclamation load step, and (3) Monitoring and analysis of settlement data. This report describes our concept that adopted development and application of geological data base system to these points.
