To find new tachykinin NK1 receptor antagonists from natural sources, we examined the tachykinin antagonist activity in the extracts of approximately 200 species of plants by the use of isolated guinea pig ileum. As a result, we discovered a novel and potent NK1 receptor antagonist in the extract of dried flowers of Matricaria chamomilla L. (chamomile). The structure of the antagonist was established as N1, N5, N10, N14-tetrakis[3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-propenoyl]-1, 5, 10, 14-tetraazatetradecane (tetracoumaroyl spermine, 1a). The Ki values of 1a, estimated from the inhibitory action on the substance P (SP)-induced contraction of the guinea pig ileum and the inhibition of the binding of [3H][Sar9, Met(O2)11]SP to human NK1 receptors, were 21.9 nM and 3.3 nM, respectively. 1a is the first potent NK1 receptor antagonist from natural sources and it has a unique structure of a polyacylated spermine. 1a was concentrated in pollen of Matricaria chamomilla L. and was also found in the extracts of flowers of other four species of Compositae. In addition, we found N1, N5, N10-tris[3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-propenoyl]-1, 5, 10, 14-tetraazatetradecane (2) as a new compound in the extract of flowers of Matricaria chamomilla L., which did not exhibit any tachykinin antagonist activity. A number of related compounds were synthesized, and the structure–activity relationship was studied.

Objectives: We aimed to examine the relationship between the hip range of motion (ROM) and ankle ROM and throwing-related shoulder and elbow injuries in elementary school baseball pitchers.Methods: This retrospective comparative study (Level of evidence: Level III) included 195 baseball pitchers (mean age 10.8±1.0 years, range 8–12 years). All pitchers underwent physical function measurements, including height, weight, shoulder strength, and hip and ankle ROM. Shoulder and elbow injury was defined as shoulder and elbow pain that the pitchers had been aware of in the past or at the time of medical checkups. The results for the injured and non-injured groups were then compared.Results: The shoulder ROM and strength in the injured and non-injured groups did not differ to a statistically significant extent. The hip external rotation on the dominant side (injured vs. non-injured: 48.9±11.1° vs. 53.3±9.7°, P<0.01), the hip internal rotation on the non-dominant side (injured vs. non-injured: 36.6±12.0° vs. 40.9±11.0°, P=0.01), and ankle plantar flexion on the non-dominant side (injured vs. non-injured: 52.0±6.8° vs. 54.3±6.7°, P=0.02) were significantly smaller in the injured group than in the non-injured group.Conclusions: The hip external rotation ROM on the dominant side and the hip internal rotation and ankle plantar flexion on the non-dominant side were significantly lower in the injured group than in the non-injured group. These results may suggest measures to reduce the incidence of elbow and shoulder injuries in elementary school baseball pitchers.

Objective: We describe 3 cases with folding deformation of a PRECISE (Cordis, Miami, FL, USA) stent in carotid artery stenting (CAS).Case Presentations: The 3 cases with cervical carotid stenosis consisted of 3 males around 80 years old and included 2 symptomatic lesions. During CAS, distal embolic protection was established using a Mo.Ma (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) along with a filter device in 2 cases and an Optimo (Tokai Medical Products, Aichi, Japan) along with a filter device in 1 case. For the filter device, either FilterWire EZ (Boston Scientific, Natick, MA, USA) or Spider FX (Covidien, Irvine, CA, USA) was employed. In all cases, a PRECISE stent was deployed after pre-dilation performed using a percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) balloon with the diameter of 2.5 to 3 mm. Post-dilation was performed after the stent deployment using a PTA balloon whose diameter was about 80% of that of the normal distal internal carotid artery. In all cases, cone-beam CT taken after the deployment of a stent showed folding deformation of the stent. In 2 cases, heavily calcified plaque hampered self-expansion of the stent, which resulted in the stent deformation. On the other hand, in the remaining 1 case, a distal shaft of the Mo.Ma caused the stent deformation, which was likely accelerated by head rotation and cervical compression that was performed to resolve difficulties for a filter retrieval device to pass through the stent, and post-dilation after the stenting.Conclusion: Heavily calcified plaque and a distal shaft of a Mo.Ma would result in stent deformation.

To evaluate the safety of food for pets, the migration of chemical substances from pet tableware was investigated by mass spectrometry. The presence of polymer additives Irgafos 168 and Erucamide were suspected based on mass spectra and were confirmed to be present in polypropylene tableware. The amount of substances migrated using simulated saliva was examined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry after solid phase extraction and purification. Photoionization was found to be suitable for the simultaneous determination of these substances. The detection limits of the established method were 0.019 μg/mL for Irgafos 168 and 0.022 μg/mL for Erucamide. Five different types of pet tableware purchased in local markets were examined and no analytes were detected in the simulated saliva using shaking extraction. In this study, the risk to pets from the substances migrated from pet tableware was considered to be sufficiently low.

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has great contribution in the analysis of the carbohydrates. Various separation modes such as ion exchange chromatography, size exclusion chromatography and partition chromatography have been applied to HPLC of mono- and oligosaccharides. Among them, partition chromatography with a polar stationary phase and aqueous mobile phase, called aqueous normal phase partition (ANP) chromatography, has been used in various fields, and is widely used for the separation of reducing sugars. Currently, this separation mode is considered to be a type of "hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC)". As the use of HILIC mode increases, many novel stationary phases being available for the separation of reducing sugars have been developed. This article focuses on the separation of reducing sugars by ANP (HILIC) mode, and summarizes the traditional and/or recent stationary phases for the separation of reducing sugars. The applicability of various kinds of stationary phases to solid-phase extraction (SPE) of saccharides is also described.
