The present study aimed to determine whether circulating serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25-(OH)D] differed between healthy dogs and dogs with acute pancreatitis (AP). Twenty-two healthy dogs and twenty client-owned dogs with AP were enrolled in the study. Serum concentrations of 25-(OH)D, blood ionized calcium (iCa), and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Concentrations of serum 25-(OH)D and blood iCa in dogs with AP were significantly lower than those of healthy dogs, and serum concentrations of CRP in dogs with AP were significantly higher than those of healthy dogs. A significant difference in 25-(OH)D serum concentrations was observed between survivor and non-survivor dogs with AP. After resolution of clinical signs, concentrations of serum 25-(OH)D, blood iCa, and serum CRP did not differ compared to those before treatment. This study shows that dogs with AP exhibit decreased 25-(OH)D levels, which might be associated with calcium imbalances and mortality rate in canine AP.

A 9-year-old castrated male Shih-tzu dog was referred to us because of chronic vomiting. The patient’s hematological, radiographic, ultrasonographic, endoscopic, and histological examinations were evaluated for diagnosis. Hematologic analysis indicated moderate anemia and azotemia. Based on imaging study, oval-shape mass was identified in gastric pylorus area. A proliferative mass was found on endoscopic examination and we performed biopsy using grasping forceps. The histopathological findings of the biopsy specimens indicated hypertrophic gastritis and Y-U pyloroplasty was performed. However, the histopathological examination of surgically resected mass was identified as tubular adenocarcinoma of stomach. Then carboplatin chemotherapy was performed 4 times for 13 weeks. The clinical sign such as vomiting were resolved gradually after surgery and chemotherapy, and the patient’s condition was managed favorably until recently (30 months after surgery). This case report demonstrated clinical features, imaging studies, endoscopic characteristics, histopathological and immunohistochemical features of gastric tubular adenocarcinoma as early gastric cancer in a dog.

A 4-year-old female Maltese (case 1), a 9-year-old castrated male Shih-Tzu (case 2) and 2-year-old female Pomeranian (case 3) were presented because of neurological signs such as head tilt, ataxia, circling and paresis. Three cases were tentatively diagnosed to meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology based on computed tomography scan and cerebrospinal fluid analysis. All patients were managed with cyclosporine plus prednisolone therapy. The survival times of three patients were 170, 70 and 21 days, respectively. After cases expired, we performed necropsy and histopathological examination for definitive diagnosis. Based on the necropsy, histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations, case 1, 2 and 3 were definitely diagnosed to necrotizing meningoencephalitis, necrotizing leukoencephlaitis and granulomatous meningoencephalitis, respectively. This case report demonstrated that the clinical findings, brain CT characteristics, histopathological and immunohistochemical features of NME, NLE and GME in dogs and discussed about the reason of relatively short survival times under cyclosporine plus prednisolone therapy.

The purpose of this study was to assess the normal distribution of 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) uptake of canine brain structures using a high-resolution research tomography-positron emission tomography (HRRT-PET) and 7 T-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fusion system. FDG-PET and T2-weighted MRI of the brain were performed on 4 healthy laboratory beagle dogs. On MRI, regions of interests (ROIs) were manually drawn over 51 intracranial structures, including nine gross structures and 42 detailed structures. Relative standard uptake value ratio (rSUV=SUV of ROI/SUV of whole brain) was calculated for each ROI. The HRRT-PET and 7 T-MRI fusion imaging system demonstrated significant differences in glucose metabolism among various intracranial structures. Among gross structures, the midbrain and the pons and medulla oblongata had the highest uptake (rSUV: 1.12 ± 0.03) and lowest uptake (rSUV: 0.90 ± 0.06) of FDG, respectively. When rSUVs were calculated on detailed regions, the caudal colliculus and the longitudinal fibers of pons had the highest (rSUV: 1.62 ± 0.05) and the lowest (rSUV: 0.63 ± 0.03) glucose metabolism, respectively. Because the high resolution of PET-MRI fusion images provided clearly identifiable metabolic activities of canine brain, the HRRT-PET and 7 T-MRI fusion imaging might be a good tool for evaluation of intracranial diseases in canines.

A 6-year-old ShihTzu presented with tonic-clonic cluster seizure. T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images showed bilateral diffuse hyperintense lesions at the cerebral cortex with enlarged sulci. Computed tomography revealed a portosystemic shunt (PSS) and azygos continuation. Based on the clinical signs, blood examinations and diagnostic images, the dog was diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy secondary to PSS. The neurologic signs were gradually improved after medical therapy for hyperammonemia. This is the first report of hyperintensity of the cerebral cortex on T2-weighted MR images associated with acute hepatic encephalopathy in a dog.
