A link between certain infectious microorganisms and an increased risk of atherosclerotic disease has been suggested. By analyzing the data of subjects who had undergone general health-screening tests, a possible association between carotid atherosclerosis and seropositivity of antibody against hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been previously reported. In the present study, a possible link between carotid atherosclerosis and HCV core protein positivity was assessed, because it is postulated to be a better marker of viremia and thus persistent infection. Of the 1992 enrolled subjects, 496 (25%) had carotid artery plaque, and 25 (1.3%) were positive for HCV core protein. Carotid artery plaque was positive in 480/1967 (24%) and 16/25 (64%) of the core protein-negative and core protein-positive subjects, respectively (p<0.0001 by χ2 test). Serum concentrations of transaminases were higher in core protein-positive subjects, but albumin concentrations were not significantly different between the 2 groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that HCV core protein positivity is an independent predictor of carotid plaque with an odds ratio of 5.61 (95% confidence interval 2.06-15.26, p<0.001). These data further support the possible link between persistent HCV infection and carotid atherosclerosis in the subjects without severe liver dysfunction. (Circ J 2003; 67: 26 - 30)

Recently almost all advanced companies own transactional ITs such as POS (point-of-sales), ERP (enterprise resource planning), MRP (material requirement planning), etc. Since analytic processes are necessary to obtain significant information from them, decision makers of most of those companies can not utilize the outcomes directly. A modern and advanced IT system consisting of models and algorithms is called analytic IT. The objective of the analytic IT is to help the decision maker. In this paper, we survey the supply chain (SC) optimization. We introduce three decision levels of the SC and show the classification of inventories. We also discuss several basic optimization models such as logistics network design, inventory, scheduling, lot-sizing, and vehicle routing models.

This paper focuses on a two-dimensional strip packing problem where a set of arbitrarily shaped rectilinear blocks need be packed into a larger rectangular container without overlap. A rectilinear block is a polygonal block whose interior angles are either 90∘or 270∘. This problem involves many industrial applications, such as VLSI design, timber/glass cutting, and newspaper layout. We generalized a bottom-left and a best-fit algorithms to the rectilinear block packing problem in our previous paper. Based on the analysis of the strength and weakness of these algorithms, we propose a new construction heuristic algorithm called the partition-based best-fit algorithm (PBF algorithm), which takes advantages of both the bottom-left and the best-fit algorithms. The basic idea of the PBF algorithm is that it partitions all the items into groups and then packs the items in a group-by-group manner. The best-fit algorithm is taken as the internal tactics for each group. The proposed algorithm is tested on a series of instances, which are generated from benchmark instances. The computational results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the performance of the existing construction heuristic algorithms and is especially effective for the instances having large differences in the sizes of given shapes.

Here, to determine the effects of transport stress on blood parameters in dogs, we investigated the changes in hematologic and serum chemical parameters in healthy beagle dogs transported from Beijing, China, to Osaka, Japan, to obtain the background data. Only the activity of serum alkaline phosphatase increased clearly upon arrival, a change attributed to transport stress, but the activity gradually reduced afterward. No marked changes in levels of other blood parameters were noted. Our findings here suggest that alkaline phosphatase is a useful tool for studying transport stress.
