The autocorrelation of angle resolved photoemission data from the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta shows distinct peaks in momentum space which disperse with binding energy in the superconducting state, but not in the pseudogap phase. Although it is tempting to attribute a nondispersive behavior in momentum space to charge ordering, a deconstruction of the autocorrelation reveals that the nondispersive peaks arise from the tips of the Fermi arcs, which themselves do not change with binding energy.

We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-layered cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CuO6+delta to elucidate the origin of shadow band. We found that the shadow band is exactly the c(2×2) replica of the main band irrespective of the carrier concentration and its intensity is invariable with respect to temperature, doping, and substitution constituents of block layers. This result rules out the possibility of antiferromagnetic correlation and supports the structural origin of shadow band. ARPES experiments on optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 also clarified the existence of the c(2×2) shadow band, demonstrating that the shadow band is not a unique feature of Bi-based cuprates. We conclude that the shadow band is related to the orthorhombic distortion at the crystal surface.

Using a modified mesa structure of high-Tc superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ with a thin underlaying base superconductor (∼3 μm), the effective working temperature of the continuous and monochromatic terahertz emitter is extended up to 70 K, and the maximum power of ∼30 μW at 0.44 THz is achieved at the relatively high temperature of T b = 55 K in a low bias current retrapping region. The diverging behavior of the intensity occurring at 55 K in the low current regime without hot spot formation may provide us an important clue for the stronger THz radiation from intrinsic Josephson junction devices.

Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions in high-temperature superconductors enable the fabrication of compact sources of coherent terahertz radiation. Here, we demonstrate that multiple stacks patterned on the same Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ crystal can—under optimized conditions—be synchronized to emit high-power THz-radiation. For three synchronized stacks, we achieved 610 μW of continuous-wave coherent radiation power at 0.51 THz. We suggest that synchronization is promoted by THz-waves in the base crystal. We note that synchronization cannot be achieved in all samples. However even in these cases, powers on the 100-μW scale can be generated.

Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) made from high-temperature superconductors such as Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212) (BSCCO) are a promising source of coherent continuous-wave terahertz radiation. It is thought that at electrical bias conditions under which THz-emission occurs, hot spots may form due to resistive self-heating, and that these spots may be highly beneficial for the generation of high levels of THz power. Here, we perform an imaging study of the temperature distribution at the surface of BSCCO stacks utilizing the temperature-dependent 612 nm fluorescence line of Eu3+ in a europium chelate. The images directly reveal a highly non-uniform temperature distribution in which the temperature in the middle of the stack can exceed the superconducting transition temperature by tens of Kelvin under biasing conditions typical for THz-emission.

The vortex-liquid and vortex-solid phases in single crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ placed in tilted magnetic fields are studied by in-plane resistivity measurements using the Corbino geometry to avoid spurious surface-barrier effects. It was found that the anisotropy of the vortex-solid phase increases with temperature and exhibits a maximum at T≈0.97Tc. In contrast, the anisotropy of the vortex-liquid phase rises monotonically across the whole measured temperature range. The observed behavior is discussed in the context of dimensional crossover and thermal fluctuations of vortices in the strongly layered system.

An anomalous phonon peak that appears only in the superconducting state has been reported for nonmagnetic intermetallic superconductor RNi211B2C (R=Y, Lu). In the present paper, we shall demonstrate that another rare-earth borocarbide ErNi211B2C seems to show similar phonon anomalies. A spectral weight transfer from the above-lying TA phonon mode to the aforementioned peak was rather small, but it is consistent with the theoretical prediction for the system with smaller 2Δ/Eph ratio. Combining the present results with those observed in the other borocarbide systems, we suggest that such a phonon anomaly might be a common phenomenon for superconductors with a strong nesting feature of the Fermi surface.

We synthesized single crystalline MgB2 under ambient pressure by using conventional materials and equipment. The single crystals of MgB2 were of good quality, where the crystal structure refinements were successfully converged with R=0.020. The measurements of the magnetic properties yielded a sharp superconducting transition at 38 K with transition width ΔTc=0.8 K. The upper critical field for applied field parallel to the ab plane (Hc2ab) reveals a positive curvature, while Hc2 parallel to the c axis (Hc2c) increases linearly in temperature dependence, which yields a temperature dependence of the superconducting anisotropy ratio of γ=Hc2ab/Hc2c with γ∼1 near Tc and 4.0 at 25 K.

One of the interesting features of the photoemission spectra of the high temperature cuprate superconductors is the presence of a large signal (referred to as the "background") in the unoccupied region of the Brillouin zone. Here we present data indicating that the background signal is a component of the photocurrent that is separate from the spectral function and is most likely due to strong scattering of the photoelectrons. We also present an analytical method that can be used to subtract the background signal.

We examine the momentum and energy dependence of the scattering rate of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The scattering rate is of the form a + bomega around the Fermi surface for under-and optimal doping. The inelastic coefficient b is found to be isotropic. The elastic term a, however, is found to be highly anisotropic for under-and optimally doped samples, with an anisotropy which correlates with that of the pseudogap. This is contrasted with heavily overdoped samples, which show an isotropic scattering rate and an absence of the pseudogap above Tc. We find this to be a generic property for both single-and double-layer compounds.

Solving the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations self-consistently we investigated the influence of surface defects on the vortex penetration and expulsion in thin mesoscopic superconducting samples. The effect of the number, size, and position of surface defects on the vortex entry and exit fields and on the entrance and exit positions of the vortex are studied for very thin circular, square, and rectangular samples. For specific vortex configurations we found that due to the interplay between the vortex-vortex repulsion and the vortex-defect interaction, the vortex does not enter or leave the sample through the surface defect.

The temperature dependence of the vortex penetration and expulsion fields in mesoscopic superconducting disks are studied. We experimentally find that the penetration field decreases with increasing temperature for all values of the vorticity. On the other hand, the temperature dependence of the expulsion fields shows two regimes: For some vortex states the expulsion field increases with temperature, while for other states it is almost temperature independent. A numerical study based on the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory confirms that the former regime corresponds to multivortex states and the latter to giant vortex states. The origin of this difference is discussed.

Josephson plasma excitations in the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta have been investigated in a wide microwave frequency region (9.8–75 GHz)—in particular, in a magnetic field applied parallel to the ab plane of the single crystal. In sharp contrast to the case for magnetic fields parallel to the c axis or tilted from the ab plane, it was found that there are two kinds of resonance modes, which are split in energy and possess two distinctly different magnetic field dependences. One always lies higher in energy than the other and has a shallow minimum at about 0.8 kOe, then increases linearly with magnetic field. On the other hand, another mode begins to appear only in a magnetic field (from a few kOe and higher) and has a weakly decreasing tendency with increasing magnetic field. By comparing with a recent theoretical model the higher-energy mode can naturally be attributed to the Josephson plasma resonance mode propagating along the primitive reciprocal lattice vector of the Josephson vortex lattice, whereas the lower-frequency mode is assigned to the novel phase collective mode of the Josephson vortex lattice, which has never been observed before.

We report a systematic high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on high-Tc superconductors Bi2Sr2Can-1CunO2n+4 (n=1–3) to study the origin of many-body interactions responsible for superconductivity. For n=2 and 3, a sudden change in the energy dispersion, so called “kink”, becomes pronounced on approaching (π,0) in the superconducting state, while a kink appears only around the nodal direction in the normal state. For n=1, the kink shows no significant temperature dependence even across Tc. This could suggest that the coupling of electrons with Q=(π,π) magnetic mode is dominant in the superconducting state for multilayered cuprates, while the interactions at the normal state and that of single-layered cuprates have a different origin.

The response of a mesoscopic superconducting disk to perpendicular magnetic fields is studied by using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method, in which transport properties of several small tunnel junctions attached to the disk are measured simultaneously. This allows us to make the first experimental distinction between the giant vortex states and multivortex states. Moreover, we experimentally find a magnetic-field induced rearrangement and combination of vortices. The experimental results are well reproduced in numerical results based on the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory.

We present a mode locking (ML) phenomenon of vortex matter observed around the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe2 pure single crystals. The ML features allow us not only to trace how the shear rigidity of driven vortices persists on approaching the second critical field, but also to demonstrate a dynamic melting transition of driven vortices at a given velocity. We observe the velocity dependent melting signatures in the peak effect regime, which reveal a crossover between the disorder-induced transition at small velocity and the thermally induced transition at large velocity. This uncovers the relationship between the peak effect and the thermal melting.

We fabricated rectangular mesa structures of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212) using e-beam lithography and Ar ion beam etching techniques for terahertz (THz) emission. c-axis resistance versus temperature (R–T), current–voltage (I–V) characteristics and bolometric THz power measurements were performed to characterize Bi2212 mesas. The emission frequency of mesas was determined using a Michelson interferometer setup which also demonstrates polarized emission. Interference patterns of THz radiation from Bi2212 mesas were detected by various detectors such as a liquid helium cooled silicon composite bolometer, a Golay cell and a pyroelectric detector. An emitted power as high as 0.06 mW was detected from Bi2212 mesas. For the first time, most of the pumped power was extracted as THz emission from a Bi2212 mesa. The radiation at 0.54 THz was detected using the Michelson interferometric setup.

The magnetic behavior of titanium dioxide nanobelts has been investigated with and without Codoping. Room temperature ferromagnetism was observed when the Co-doped anatase TiO2nanobelts were prepared via vacuum annealing of 2.5 at. % Co-doped titanate nanobelts, whileannealing them in air resulted in paramagnetic ordering. Interestingly, by vacuum annealing theundoped titanate nanobelts under the same conditions, superparamagnetic ordering was observed inthe resulting anatase TiO2 nanobelts. The electron paramagnetic resonance of this latter sampleshows a strong symmetrical signal at g=2.003 suggesting some sort of exchange interactions amongthe localized electrons’ spin moments from single electron trapped in oxygen vacancies.

In strongly anisotropic layered superconductors in tilted magnetic fields, the Josephson vortex lattice coexists with the lattice of pancake vortices. Due to the interaction between them, the dissipation of the Josephson vortex lattice is very sensitive to the presence of the pancake vortices. If the c-axis magnetic field is smaller than the corresponding lower critical field, the pancake stacks are not formed but the individual pancakes may exist in the fluctuational regime either near the surface in large-size samples or in the central region for small-size mesas. We calculate the contribution of such fluctuating pancake vortices to the c-axis conductivity of the Josephson vortex lattice and compare the theoretical results with measurements on small mesas fabricated out of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ crystals. A fingerprint of fluctuating pancakes is a characteristic exponential dependence of the c-axis conductivity observed experimentally. Our results provide strong evidence of the existence of the fluctuating pancakes and their influence on the Josephson vortex lattice dissipation.
