Six groups of Wistar rats were used to demonstrate effects of magnesium deficiencies on thiamine metabolism. Group I was fed both a thiamine and magnesium deficient diet, Group II a thiamine deficient and magnesium sufficient diet, Group III a thiamine adequate and magnesium deficient diet, Group IV a thiamine adequate and magnesium sufficient diet (control), Group V an excess thiamine and magnesium deficient diet and Group VI an excess thiamine and magnesium sufficient diet. Animals were sacrificed after four weeks and magnesium, thiamine and transketolase activities were determined in various tissues.Magnesium concentration in blood cells, plasma and bone decreased markedly in the thiamine supplemented-magnesium deficient groups (Group III and V) compared to that in the group deficient in both thiamine and magnesium (Group I). This finding suggests that the thiamine deficiency inhibited utilization of magnesium. Thiamine content of the sciatic nerve, liver and kidney of the magnesium deficient rats were lower than in the magnesium sufficient rats. This suggests that magnesium plays a considerable role in the maintenance of thiamine in tissues. No decrease of thiamine was detected in the central nervous system of magnesium deficient rats. Tissue transketolase activity decreased markedly in thiamine deficient and thiamine-magnesium deficient rats (Group I and II). Addition of thiamine pyrophosphate to tissue homogenates of thiamine deficient rats (Group II) resulted in recovery of transketolase activity, however this phenomenon did not occur when rats were also deficient in magnesium (Group I).

Asakusanori, the air-dried Porphyra tenera, used as a foodstuff in Japan, was found to be relatively rich in vitamin B12 and to possess a growth-promoting activity on the young chicks fed an all plant protein ration. Over thirty species of other seaweeds were tested and the vitamin contents were found to vary from 0.1 to 4.0γ/100g on a fresh basis. Several zoo-and phytoplanktons and bottom muds of pond were also analysed and proved to be very rich in this vitamin. The author's view on the significance of the vitamin in algae is proposed, especially on the utility of marine and freshwater algae as APF sources.

The following ocular changes were observed in the rabbit in niacin deficiency.(1) Increase, separation, and movement of the pigment at the limbi corneae. (2) Reactive congestion at the limbi corneae and a little corneal vascularization. (3) Separation and movement to rod and cone layer of the pigment at the pigment epithelium. (4) Slight degeneration in the ganglion cells in the retina. Various ocular changes resembling those observed in “Shibi-Gattchaki” patients as well as pellagrins have been produced in niacin deficiency of the rabbit. Further, the following relations between riboflavin and niacin were observed in riboflavin plus niacin-deficient rabbits.(1) In the riboflavin-deficient animals, urinary riboflavin was far less than that of the control animals: urinary riboflavin excretion in the load test was markedly less, indicating a low riboflavin saturation, and the riboflavin levels in the viscera (liver, kidneys, lungs, and heart) were lower than those in the control animals whether riboflavin had been loaded or not.(2) In the niacin-deficient animals, urinary niacin decreased more remarkably than in the control animals, and in the niacin plus riboflavin-deficient animals, urinary niacin fell slightly more than in the niacin-deficient animals. By tryptophan administration, urinary niacin rose temporarily and then fell rapidly till finally disappeared The niacin levels in the viscera of these deficient animals were lower than those in the control animals.(3) Niacin content of the viscera in the niacin plus riboflavin-deficient animals showed seemingly a tendency to decrease more than that in the niacin-deficient animals(4) In the niacin-deficient animals, the riboflavin levels in the viscera were always lower than those in the control animals, whether riboflavin had been loaded or not. From these results it is assumed that niacin and riboflavin compensate for each other, performing synergetic actions in consuming the vitamins in vivo. There may be some other inseparable relationships between the two vitamins, since riboflavin deficiency brought about niacin deficiency.

In the present paper the role of glucose cycloacetoacetate (GCA) in vitamin C synthesis of riboflavin-deficient rats was studied. It is evident from the results that GCA helps in maintaining vitamin C levels in blood and tissues of riboflavin-deficient rats.

1. A synergistic action of vitamin E for insulin with respect to glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis has been demonstrated in diaphragm from protein-depleted rats.2. Vitamin E added as a dietary supplement brings about increases in pyruvic acid accumulated during incubation of the diaphragm, but no synergistic action for insulin in this respect was found.3. The findings are discussed, and it is suggested that the action of vitamin E invo ves the synthesis of ATP.

1. From the fact that dehydroascorbic acid metabolism of ascorbic acidadapted bacterium was markedly accerelated by adding a small amount of glucose or ascorbic acid, a reductive process is assumed to be involved in the metabolism of dehydroascorbic acid.2. D-Arabinosone was hardly metabolized by unadapted cells, whereas it was slowly metabolized by adapted cells and it was markedly accerelated by adding a small amount of ascorbic acid. It suggests that D-arabinosone is reduced to D-ribose as follows.Ascorbic acid→dehydroascorbic acid -CO2→diketo-L-gulonic acid→L-xylosone→D-arabinosone +2H→D-ribose
