The musical alarm clocks and watches appeared about three years ago. Recently, more than lO,OOO,OOO pcs digital watches with musical alarm function are produced annually all over the world. The reason of this prosperity is that musical alarm fits more for young people's sensitivity than beep sound alarm. For there market requirements, we have developed musical chips which play comfortable melodies automatically and can be driven by low voltage source. In the process of developing them, we examined from many viewpoints such as low power supply, low current consumption, dignity of sound and frequency limits. Then we have obtained an efficient linear amplifier and excellent melody generation system.

We developed the SEIKO PULSE GRAPH which is a pulse rate training tool for runners. In pulse rate training, the strength controlled by the pulse rate instead of the speed. The PULSE GRAPH helps the training by measuring pulse rate all the time. Organization of PULSE GRAPH and the new technology for measuring pulse rate are explained as follows: The blue sensor catches pulse waves in a high S/N ratio. Although pulse waves have motional noise caused by running, a twin FFT system separates the pulse signal from the motional noise. In the present paper the sensor part is described mainly.

We have developed a very low power consumption lOOnA IC for analog quartz watch, using the current control system. As the reference voltage for the current source, we have used a circuit in which the threshold voltage of the depletion and enhancement MOS transistors and their ratio of conductance coefficient are used. For the current source, we have used the current saturation characteristic of MOS transistor. Further, this IC features excellent electrical characteristics, stable temperature characteristics and high yield, due to the CMOS Al gate process in which thin gate oxide is used.

The"CASIO SUPER CYBER CROSS(JG-200)"is an infrared (IR) communication digital watch for children. In addition to watch, alarm and stopwatch function, it has apparatus for short message, game playable alone or with another watch, and TV remote controller. Its communication distance is within 5 meters and the angle is ±15゜. It also is provided with a removable quaking booster, which operates at alarm time, in game and when recieving data. This paper describes the outline of the spesification, IR communicate protocol, and the major components of the watch.

Micro joining technology is one of most important and fundamental technologies for joining, assembling the electronic devices, parts and equipments in intimate relation with assembling technology. Micro joining processes usually involve several joining processes such as ultra-sonic joining, thermo-compression joining, thermo-sonic joining, micro-soldering and so on. These joining processes are described with joining mechanism, funda-mental or some interesting phenomena and its application on assembling monolithic or hybrid integrated circuit and print circuit board. Furthermore, several assembling processes such as wire bending, TAB, Flip Chip, die bonding are given in relation with joining phenomena. Finally, several important subjects on micro joining in future technology are given with the tend of electronic parts and equipments and assembly technology.

A conventional temperature compensation IC system is required to provide an oscillating capacity change-over switch in order that a normal type pace measuring instrument can be used. The new temperature compensation IC system we developed here has realized an "all logical adjustment" without an oscillating capacity change-over switch by introducing a "new method of a pace expression". It has become easier to provide a watch with high accuracy by use of the "all logical adjustment".

A Wrist watch "WRIST TERMINAL RC-1000" has been developed and put on the market. This one not only can receive data directly from information processing instruments (personal computers) but also memorise and readout the data at any time. As the RS-232C interface and RAM of 2K bytes are installed in the wrist watch, such functions as memory, schedule alarm, and world time are also fulfilled.

Nowadays, as watches become multifunctional, the number of circuit components for watches are increasing. Like other watch makers, CITIZEN is also advancing medium and small scale productions of a wide variety of watches. For this purpose, cost reduction and automation of soldering, in particular, are of urgent necessity. For an actual automation, however, there are a number of items to be accomplished; 1) Positioning accuracy of the circuit components, and constancy of soldering amount, 2) Prevention of solder ball formation, 3) Establishment of soldering technique for the components which cannot be heated entirely, and 4) System switchable for meeting multi-lots scale productions. As the systems meeting the above items, there are two systems: a cell type robot soldering one and a line type point soldering one. An experimental research made on automation of soldering about these two systems is reported in the present paper. Further, a method of quick switching between both the systems only by replacing programs and special jigs is executed, intending to improve repeatability and reduce operating time. Our future task is to develop and introduce higher speed and better-switchable production system utilizing the merits of both the present systems.
