Until now, the sundial has hardly been made especially in pursuit of accuracy and function. The typical sundial indicating the time at the angle of the shadow of edge lines has no structure to correct the atmospheric refraction. On the other hand, the sundial using a two-dimensional dial for reading at the center position of the shadow of a sphere provides a precise design so that not only the time difference by equation of time and longitude but also atmospheric refraction can be corrected. This"astronomical precise sundial"uses a two-dimensional dial, and it is a precise and highly functional sundial designed and manufactured in pursuit of the possiblity of the sundial from the viewpoint of astronomers. As the functions of this sundial, the local sidereal time can be directly read for the first time in the world, and the various information such as the sunrise and sunset times and the azimuth and altitude of the sun can be obtained.

A theoretical method to obtain the vibration mode of the tuning fork is explained and some discussions are done relating to the obtained vibration mode. Here, the tuning fork is regarded as the one composed of three straight bars which are connected with each other at right angle to form the U-shape. Through the above method, the resonant frequencies n_j (j=1, 2, 3, .....) and the corresponding modes of vibration can be calculated. In the results, it is seen that, when j is odd, the bending motion of the two paralledl sides of the tuning fork are in the opposite direction, when j is even, however, those are in the same direction. Moreover, when two tuning forks are of the similar shape, it is certified that there exists a simple relationship between the vibration modes of these two tuning forks. By using this relationship, unknown vibration modes of the one can be obtained easily, if the modes of the other are known. In the tuning fork, having uniform material and section, the resonant frequencies are given by n_j(k)=m^2_j(k)^-2√<EI/Sp,> where E, p , I, S and l are Young's modulus, the density of the material, the moment of inertia, the area of the section, and the total length of the tuning fork, respectively. k means the ratio of the bottom side length of the U-shape to the parallel side length, and the proportional constants m^2, are shown in a table, with the various values of k. On the asymmetrical tuning forks of which two parallel sides have a slight difference in length, the vibration modes are calculated. The changes of the resonant frequeny and the nodal point are shown in connection with the change of the difference of the parallel sides. The results of the above theoretical analysis are compared with the experimental one, and it is ascertained that both are in good coincidence.

A Wrist watch "WRIST TERMINAL RC-1000" has been developed and put on the market. This one not only can receive data directly from information processing instruments (personal computers) but also memorise and readout the data at any time. As the RS-232C interface and RAM of 2K bytes are installed in the wrist watch, such functions as memory, schedule alarm, and world time are also fulfilled.

We have launched production and sales of "Monsieur", a microrobot that is probably the world's first micromachine to move from drawing board to factory floor. "Monsieur" employs an internalized CPU-IC, rechargeable capacitor, two drive units, and a pair of photosensors to enable it to independently propels itself toward a light source. Skilled technicians assemble "Monsieur" by hand from a total of ninety-eight parts, most of which are general purpose watch parts.

This paper describes a new quartz watch driving system we developed. With this system, the second hand of a wrist watch moves smoothly as if it is sweeping. An intermittent movement of the stepping motor is transferred to a smooth sweeping motion due to the spiral spring and the viscous regulator. This system also allows the continued superiority of quartz watches.

An electronic wrist watch vith a tuning fork oscillating at h igh frequency, for example 1,000 Hz is studied. The quality factor Q of the tuning fork is measured and, distribution of energy losses is calculated. The amplitude of the tuning fork as a function of Q and the driving current is calculated and the results are compared with the experimental values. The force factor of the transducer is calculated. Then, the characteristics of magnetic circuit of the cup composed of 78 permalloy and alnico magnet is analized and the results are veryfied by experiments. Furthermore, the motion of the indexing wheel was observed using a high speed camera, and even at l,000 Hz, it was observed that the tuning fork advanced the index wheel exactly one tooth for each cycle of vibration.

A new quartz watch, "Step Melody", has been developed. The second hand of this clock swings to and fro with a melody produced in the watch. The melody is made during the period of musical notes, while the motor to make swing the second hand is driven during the period of rests. Thus, an epoch-making watch breaking out from convention only to tell time, which make people enjoy time swinging with melody has been developed. This paper describes the construction and the operation of this watch.

The musical alarm clocks and watches appeared about three years ago. Recently, more than lO,OOO,OOO pcs digital watches with musical alarm function are produced annually all over the world. The reason of this prosperity is that musical alarm fits more for young people's sensitivity than beep sound alarm. For there market requirements, we have developed musical chips which play comfortable melodies automatically and can be driven by low voltage source. In the process of developing them, we examined from many viewpoints such as low power supply, low current consumption, dignity of sound and frequency limits. Then we have obtained an efficient linear amplifier and excellent melody generation system.
