The musical alarm clocks and watches appeared about three years ago. Recently, more than lO,OOO,OOO pcs digital watches with musical alarm function are produced annually all over the world. The reason of this prosperity is that musical alarm fits more for young people's sensitivity than beep sound alarm. For there market requirements, we have developed musical chips which play comfortable melodies automatically and can be driven by low voltage source. In the process of developing them, we examined from many viewpoints such as low power supply, low current consumption, dignity of sound and frequency limits. Then we have obtained an efficient linear amplifier and excellent melody generation system.

Two methods are well known to drive an EL lamp for a watch. One is a self-oscillation circuit using a transformer, the other is a driver IC equipped with a charge-up coil. The merits of a self-oscillation circuit are to be simple and easy to get brightness. However, the mounting area is larger and the cost is higher. The purpose of development of the EL Driver IC is to make smaller the mounting area and the lower cost. In practice, a charge-up coil both for EL and for buzzer is used in the EL Driver IC. (This Driver IC also includes buzzer driver.) Wrist watch bilt-in this driver IC has been produced on the commercial basis. Hereafter we will promote the EL technology as a regular function of digital quartz watch.

This paper describes new cuts for torsional mode quartz crystal resonators, which are designated "TT-Cut" classified into "TT(X_1)-Cut" and "TT(X_2)-Cut". The objective of this paper is propose a new cut for torsional quartz crystal resonators and to clarify its frequency characteristics, frequency temperature behavior and electrical equivalent circuit parameters. First, a frequency equation of a resonator vibrating in torsion is shown. Since a torsion problem is equivalent to solving a torsional rigidity C_t, the derivative procedure of C_t is described in detail. The calculated results are then compared with the measured data of tuning fork-type, so that the present resonators are found to be successfully obtained with a frequency of about 400kHz and the second order temperature coefficient β of approximately one third of the flexural quartz crystal resonators.

SEIKO PULSE GRAPH is a pulse rate monitor for running training. This can be realized by the development of a blue sensing system and a twin FFT system. We have already published a blue sensing system to get a high S/N ratio^(1). The twin FFT system can separate pulse rate from motion noise that is generated during running. So we could realize the real-time pulse rate monitor system in the size of a watch. This paper describes the electronic circuit for a twin FFT system and an algorithm of measuring pulse rate.

We developed a display device for motion picture. The display elements of each dot are composed of rotors of small stepping motors and are able to display one of four colors such as cyan, magenta, white and yellow. The stators, coils and magnetic circuits are arranged compactly in the cylindrical display element. The display elements are able to rotate and stop rapidly because they have small inertia and are well fitted to drive pulses. We made two display devices with the dot pitches of 6 mm and 20 mm, and they can display 30 frames and 15 frames of picturs per second, respectively.

His Imperial Highness the Prince Takamatsu is a brother to the Present Emperor of Japan. The Prince has a collection of timepieces which is not very large, but each is very excellent as an antique. The Prince is not a positive collector and he seems to have inherited it as his ancestors' fortune. In his collection the writer found a stackfreed watch, the first discovery in Japan. Though the movement together with the dial and hand underwent reconstruction, the original watch seems to have been made in the 16th century or so. One more timepiece can be added to the existence of the oldest timepiece-the clock now kept at Kunozan Toshogu in Shizuoka City made in 1581 in Madrid and once owned by Iyeyasu Tokugawa.

A new method of measuring blood pressure has been proposed, which is based on the relationship between blood pressure and pulse wave velocity that passes artery wall. We paid attention to this method as this one was very advantageous to miniaturize the blood measuring instrument. We have developed a circuit to measure pulse wave velocity which can be transduced into blood pressure value. Furthemore we have brought Casio brand blood pressuer monitor watch to the market, of which circuit is miniaturized into one chip LSI. The constitution and the blood monitoring operation of this watch are described in this Paper.
