This paper surveys the impact of knowledge accumulation on the development of regional industries. We selected three prefectures as case study regions: Nagano, Shizuoka and Hiroshima. After converting the International Patent Classification (IPC) to Japan Standard Industrial Classification (JSIC), we measured the regional knowledge accumulation status of each industry by determining the numbers of patents. Subsequently, we estimated the impact of the three elements that changed the value-addition of each industry (labor, capital and the number of patents) by utilizing several different models. Two points become clear: first, knowledge accumulation positively affects the value-addition of regional industry. Secondly, the effect of knowledge accumulation on the development of regional industries (forward linkage of knowledge) is stronger than the effect of regional development to the knowledge accumulation via the vitalization of R & D (backward linkage of knowledge) in many cases.
