An ion-exchange resins were treated for I h by an aqueous solution of MgSO4 with a concentration of 1 mol dm-3 and they were carbonized for 1h in a high purity N2 gas at the temperature range from 300 to 1000°C. For the obtained spherical carbon containing MgO, the bactericidal effects for Escherichia coli were studied by colony count method. From XRD measurements of carbonized resins, MgO of cubic phase was detected and no graphite was observed. The amount of MgO in the carbon samples was a constant value of 30wt%, irrespective of the carbonization temperature of an ion-exchange resin exchanged by Mg2+. From the results of bactericidal tests, it was found that the antibacterial activity increased with the increase of the crystallinity of MgO dispersed in carbon samples, i.e., the increase of carbonization temperature. On the sample carbonized at 1000°C, it was clarified to show the bactericidal action for Escherichia coli.

Carbon micro-coils (CMCs) with 3D-helical/spiral structures and coil diameters of orders were obtained by the metalcatalyzed pyrolysis of acetylene at 700-800°C. In this review, the preparation process, morphology, microstructure, properties, and some applications of CMCs are introduced and their future prospect is discussed. The as-grown CMCs have almost amorphous structure, but were graphitized by high temperature heat treatment with full preservation of the coiling morphology. The CMCs could effectively generate inductive electromotive force, inductive current and thus Joul's heat under the application of microwaves. The CMCs/elastic polymer composite elements showed high tactile/proximity sensing properties which are comparable to that of human skin. The CMCs are a possible candidate for electromagnetic wave absorbers, remote heating materials, visualization elements of microwaves, tactile/proximity sensor elements, micro-antenna, chiral catalysts, bio-activators or bio-deactivators, energy converters, etc.

In the paper, we prepared the carbon fibers/epoxy resin composites using modified carbon fibers by a new surface modification method named photo-oxygenation. Effects of the surface modification of carbon fibers on the properties of the composites and matrix resin have been studied through the estimation of color and dynamic viscoelastic properties of the composites. The obtained results are as follows.(1) Color and the dynamic viscoelastic properties of the composites change with carbon fibers' surface modified or not. So it is seen that the surface modification of reinforcing fibers changes not only the interphase but also the structure of matrix resin and its curing behavior.(2) The color properties and crosslinking density of the matrix resin are linearly related, so the color properties will be able to be applied for the quality control as curing estimation.

Electric double-layer capacitors based on the charge storage at the interface between a high specific surface area activated carbon electrode and an electrolyte solution have been developed, and are widely used as maintenance-free power source for IC memories and microcomputers. Following the production of small size capacitor of the capacitance up to 1F, middle size capacitor having the capacitance up to 100F were produced and applied to power sources combined with solar cell in traffic signal and so on. Recently, large size capacitors of the capacitance about 1500F are being developed for large power sources such as in HEV. However, the energy density of electric double-layer capacitors is smaller than that of batteries such as the lithium ion battery. To solve this problem, new electrolytes, electrode materials and the construction of the cells were developed. As a result, the energy density of available large device (1000-2000F) was enhanced to 6 Wh/l at power density of 800W/1 and expected to be larger in near future.

Carbon nanotubes and nano-graphite are called as nano-carbons made of graphene skeleton. Resonant Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool to investigate the special electronic and phonon structures of nano-carbons. Although Raman spectroscopy has been used for characterizing carbon materials for long years, the origin of some weak Raman spectra is not always clearly understood. The recent progress of Raman spectroscopy has provided a new concept such as double resonance Raman theory for the undefined spectra observed not only in nano-carbon but also in conventional carbon materials. Especially single nanotube spectroscopy becomes a standard technique in which we measure with no-contact, at room-temperature and ambient pressure.

Recently astronomical observation revealed that optical properties of interstellar dusts in galaxies nearby our Galaxy shows gradual variation of optical properties closely related to their stage of galactic growth. The average interstellar extinction curves of Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and our Galaxy are summarized with astronomical observations of artificial satellites. An extinction curve of SMC, the youngest of them, showed smooth feature from far UV to near IR. But that of our Galaxy, the oldest of them, showed a large hump peaked at 220 nm. In this paper we discussed evolution of carbonaceous dusts in galactic growth.With high resolution observation of IR spectrum near our solar system, a life of carbonaceous dusts were clarified. The carbonaceous dusts were formed in circumstellar space of carbon rich aged stars and then they were expelled into interstellar space to be interstellar dusts. After the long residence in interstellar space the dusts were condensed in a dark cloud to form a protostar. In aged stage of dusts there are at least three substages such as dark cloud stage, protostellar stage, T Tauri stage and so on. The spectral changes of their carbonaceous dusts in these stages were summarized.
