Various studies about the behavior of tritium in the environment are reviewed with comments on several origins of their occurances. For atmospheric tritium, different chemical species and their seasonal variation have been studied. The average tritium concentration in river waters was found to be 1.5-2 times higher than that of precipitations at various sites of Japan.The vertical distribution of tritium in ground water has raised an interest for the samples collected from different wells in depth. The effect of the accidental release of tritium and the tritium level around nuclear facilities are also mentioned.

It is presented to estimate yields of neutron and radioactive nucleus (7Be, 12B, 10C, 11C, 14C, 13N) per one p11B fusion reaction by the following 15 reactions : 11B (p, n) 11C, 11B (α, n) 14N, 11B (α, p) 14C, (α, n) of the structure material (SUS316) bombarded by α-particles, (γ, n) of the same and 11B (γ, n) 10B by 16MeV γ -ray of 11B (p, γ) 12C, 10B (p, n) 10C, 10B (α, n) 13N, 10B (p, γ) nc, 10B (p, α) 7Be, 11B (d, n) 12C, 11B (d, 2n) 11C, 11B (d, p) 12B, 10B (d, n) 11 10B (d, n) C and D (d, n) 3He, in the p11B fusion plasma with impurities of 10B and D. Result shows that the neutron yields by the other 7 reactions than11B (p, n) 11C, 11B (α, n) 14N, SUS316 (γ, n) and 11B (d, n) 12C can be neglected (< 10-7). Neutron yield and averaged energy by the above 4 main reactions are 2.27×10-3 and 2.49 MeV, and, 9.62×10-5 and 3.93 MeV from the plasma of Ti=300keV and Ti/Te=1, and Ti/Te=200, respectively.

この報告は, プラズマ研究所の計算機「HITAC-8500」のための1つのプログラムの報告である。このプログラムは空心円筒コイル群によって作られる磁場を計算し, 1) 磁場のr成分 (=Br), z成分 (=Bz), 磁場の強さ (=√B2r+B2z), ベクトルポテンシアルのφ-成分と軸迄の距離の積 (=rAφ) をラインプリンターに出力し, 2) 磁力線を, コイルの断面図と共に, プロッターで描かせ, 更に3) 磁場の強さが等しい点を結んだ線 (等磁気圧線) もプロッターで描かせることが出来るように製作されている。

Method to calculate the magnetic field produced by finite size helical coils with an rectangular cross section is derived. The uniform current density across the cross section is assumed. The double integral across the cross section is carried out analytically, and the integral along the axis of the helical coils is carried out numerically. An example of the helical coil wound around a toroid is shown, under the assumption that the edge of the coil is tangential to the toroid.

For the origin of the precursor electron in the E-M shock tube, various hypotheses were proposed by many authors. But up to now there is no definite conclusion of its origin nor the informations of its density. Now we report the axial distribution of the precursor electron in a T-shaped shock tube which has been measured by using the automatic measuring apparatus of the microwave reflection coefficient.

Recent progress of “cold fusion” research is reviewed.Accumulated experimental results in these three years since March 1989 are classified as 1) weak neutron emission, 2) tritium generation with anomalous n/T ratio, 3) charged particle emission with anomality, 4) He-4 generation, 5) large excess heat generation and 6) anomalous enhancement of D/Pd ratio.Resutls of 1) through 4) suggest the existence of unclarified nuclear reactions in Pd (or Ti) /Deuterium systems.Relation between excess heat and nuclear products is yet to be clarified.Subjectives of further research are mentioned.

Dynamic stabilization of high beta plasmas by axial rf current has been theoretically investigated. It is shown that higher-number modes are very easy to be stabilized. In case of m=1 mode, if there is no conducting shell, the shorter wave-length instabilities can be stabilized, but the stabilized wave-number region is very narrow. When the plasma column is surrounded by a concentric conducting shell, however, the stabilizing force of the rf image current induced in the conducting shell is so effective that the long wave-length m=1 mode can be perfectly stabilized by very small rf current.

We propose the possibility to ignite the D-D reactor from the D-T reactor by increasing the deuterium density and reducing the tritium density. Supposing that the D-T reactor has been already realized and the plasma parameters are in the Trapped Ion Regime, the D-D reactor is possibly ignited by continuously developing the plasma parameters from the D-T reactor. The dynamics of the transition is calculated, and it becomes clear that the additional heating in the initial state is very effective. The characteristics of the D-D reactor are also shown. The loss rate of tritium from the core plasma is one order less than that of the conventional D-T reactor. At last the modified D-T reactor which is aimed to improve the tritium breeding ratio in the Li blanket is introduced.

Single particle confinement or particle orbit and collisional diffusion are reviewed for general toroidal systems. The single particle confinement or particle orbit is described using the guiding center approximation. Effects of the radial electric field are also considered. Neoclassical features are explained intuitively by using the characteristics of the single particle orbits and effective Coulomb collision frequencies. As an advanced treatment, the neoclassical theory is systematically given on the basis of the moment approach.

Relaxation processes toward the lower energy states in spheromak configurations were studied by means of three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations. For the initial conditions, two cases of equilibrium states were given and the temporal evolutions of the instabilities were investigated in the nonlinear regime. In the first case, which has a high q-profile (1.7 at the magnetic axis), the poloidal flux amplification was observed through the development of a m=1, n=1 mode. This process can be explained by the Kadomtsev internal disruption model. In the second case, which has a low q-profile (0.12 at the magnetic axis), magnetic flux conversion from the poloidal to the toloidal direction toward the Taylor minimum energy state was observed through the development of a m=1, n=4 kink mode. It is expected that this process is related to the self-reversal mechanism in a reversed field pinch.

Progress of the confinement study of Spheromak plasma is reviewed from the view point of APPLICATION OF TOKAMAK PHYSICS. Energy confinement time is around 0.1ms. Accuracy of comparison between theory and experiment was fairly improved by introduction of 3D simulation in two instability cases.

When an intense laser light passes through a plasma, a small fraction of it is scattered by free electrons. Measurements of the intensity and the spectral distribution of the scattered light from the shocked plasma has been used to determine the electron density and the electron temperature behind the reflected shock waves. Rayleigh scattering signal from one atmospheric pressure air was used as.a measure to evaluate the magnitude of Thomson scattering signal from the shocked plasm, In our experiments the electron densities behind the reflected shock wave at initial pressure of Ar 1 mmHg were determined as. about 1016 cm-3, which were in good agreement with a calculated value by shock theory. By assuming a plasma parameter α=0.85, theoretical curve accords very well with the measured spectral distribution of the scattered light. In this case the electron, temperature behind the refledted shock wave at initial pressure of Ar 0.4 mmHg was 23, 000oK.
