The NaCl single electrode potential of aluminium refered to IN calomel cell in NaCl aquores solution as affected by its surface condition was studied by specially made vacume tube potentio meter (fig. 1). Potential of aluminium varies largely by its surface treatment. The potential of aluminium with its natural oxide film is nobler then the case when its film was removed by special treatment as electrolytic polishing in acetic unhydrat and perchloric acid bath. The specimen with no oxide film show special corrosion behavior in acid and alkali solution as shown in fig. 4. But its oxide film groth rapidly when the specimen was dried or immersed in mater which contains oxygen.

With a growing demand for the extensive use of Magnesium alloy materials of good mechanical and thermal properties, studies on the effect of the addition of Zirconium to Magnesium alloys have heretofore been continued pretty laboriously. However, little investigation on of the addtion of Zirconium to wrought, especially rolled, Magnesium alloy materials has been reported yet.So that we studied the characteristics of Magnesium rolled sheets containing Zirconium of various amount. The results obtained were as follows;(1) The addition of Zirconium was much effective to refinement of the ingot structure which resulted in the better ingot working.(2) As for mechanical properties, it improved the ductility of the alloy much better than that of Magnesium alone.(3) It raised up the recrystallization temperature.(4) It improved workalilities of Mg-Zr rolled sheet.(5) As to the orientation, its strength decreares with an increase of Zirconium addition.

This paper proposes a technique for evaluating the nucleation sequence and grain refinement phenomena during solidification of a metallic alloy. Time-resolved and in-situ transmission imaging using a monochromatized X-ray in a synchrotron radiation facility, SPring-8, showed wave-like nucleation events, in which nucleation sequentially occurred along the temperature gradient, in an Al-4mass%Si alloy with addition of TiB2 (Al-3mass%Ti-1mass%B alloy). The position and time of nucleation events were measured to analyze the nucleation wave. The wave motion, which was calculated from the measured data, was used to evaluate the difference of nucleation temperature for each dendritic grain from the wave front. The standard deviation of the temperature difference in the Al-4mass%Si alloy with TiB2 particles was evaluated to be as small as 0.25 K. The addition of TiB2 reduced the standard deviation to more than one tenth. This study shows that the dispersion or the standard deviation is a representative figure for evaluating the potency of nuclei.

The crack initiation mechanism of cast aluminum alloy was addressed to quantitatively evaluate the fatigue strength. We employed the synchrotron radiation microtomography to visualize the three-dimensional damages around pores and silicon particles. Two types of specimens underwent a low-cycle fatigue test. The temperature of solution treatment was different, and it yielded a difference in the shape, size and distribution of silicon particles. After a certain cycles of fatigue, a catastrophic damage around many silicon particles occurred, and they connected to each other so as to form a crack especially within the high stressed region around a relatively large pore. The scanning electron microscopy after the test showed that the type of damage was the breakage of long-shaped silicon particles or the aluminum–silicon interface debonding of round silicon particles. The high temperature solution treatment facilitated the interface debonding by the enlargement of silicon particles.

Zinc diffusion process is very effective to corrosion protection of aluminum alloys. Most effective condition of zinc diffusion layers to corrosion protection was not clear. The relationship between the condition of zinc diffusion layer and the velocity of pitting corrosion was studied. It was found that the product of surface zinc content and diffusion depth, and gradient of zinc content in diffusion layer are very important to corrosion protection.
