Surface observation and electrochemical measurements were carried out to clarify the influence of acetic acid on corrosion behaviors of industrially pure aluminum alloy 1100. The consideration of the potential-pH-pOAc diagram and polarization analysis reveal that coexistence of citric acid and chloride ions will severely pitting-attack aluminum alloy 1100.

The two-step aging behaviors of various Al–Mg–Si alloy extrusions have been studied mainly by tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC) and electrical resistance measurements. The natural aging at 5°C, 20°C and 40°C for 86.4 ks has a beneficial effect on the strength after artificial aging of the low Mg2Si containing alloys. On the other hand, the natural aging has a negative effect on the strength after artificial aging of the high Mg2Si containing alloys. The β″ peak on the DSC curve shifts to a higher temperature with natural aging for the high Mg2Si alloy. However, no β″ peak was found for the low Mg2Si alloy. This suggests that there is no negative effect dominated by β″ phase for the lower Mg2Si alloys.

Description is given of the properties of aluminium foil as well as of its present use for packaging, insulation, decoration and capacitor with some examples.With our increasing knowledge of the properties of aluminium foil the use of aluminium foil has been greatly accelerated, and the improvement of laboratorial methods and manufacturing technique concerning embossing, printing and lacquering has made new applications possible.With the downward trend in prices and increasing interests of customers aluminium foil seems to to have the bright future finding new fields for more applications.

In Japan Air Self-Defense Force, serious corrosion problems were encountered, regarding to the presence of the microorganisms in JP-4 fuel. Fuel was dripping from a tank in jet fuel aircraft. Microorganisms were cultured after being isolated from the JP-4 fuel underground storage tank, tank-lorry, water separator, and aircraft fuel tank. The effects of microbiological corrosion were examined on the specimens of 61-S aluminum alloy which was used in aircraft fuel tanks.The results were as follows:(1) Seventeen sorts of bacteria and three sorts of fungi were found to be bred by the utilization of JP-4 as nutritious element.(2) After culturing for 140 days, the surfaces of some aluminum specimens were covered with brown powdery blisters caused by the growth of microorganisms and other contaminations.(3) Severe corrosion pits were made on aluminum specimens, on which Micrococcus caseolyticus, Comamonas, and Vibrio faecalis were cultured.(4) It was observed that the surface of aluminum alloy specimens was covered with mycelium mats of Cladosporium resinae and tremendous corrosion existed under the mats.As the results, it is concluded that the preparation of filter-separator equipment such as ultrafine filter will be effective for the purpose of perfect removal of microorganisms from aircraft fuel.

Binary titanium alloys containing Nb or Ta, which are allergy-free and non-toxicity elements, were fabricated, and then the possibility of their application to various music instruments made of brass was investigated by the evaluation of corrosion characteristics, elastic modulus-density ratio (E/ρ), resonance frequency (f) and internal friction (Q−1) . The practical models of the mouthpieces of the trumpets made of the binary titanium alloys were also fabricated by precision casting method in order to compare directly with the sound characteristics of those made of brass and commercially pure Ti. The critical current density for the passivation of the Ti–Nb and Ti–Ta system alloys is approximately 40% lower than that of brass and nearly equal to or a little higher than that of commercially pure Ti. The Q−1 of the Ti–Nb and Ti–Ta system alloys with α″ phase drastically increase. The E/ρ and f of the Ti–Nb and Ti–Ta system alloys exhibit a positive relationship. The sound characteristics of practical mouthpieces of trumpets for a bass instrument can be controlled by changing the E/ρ and f of the alloys.

Castings in plate form of commercially pure titanium KS50 and three titanium alloys, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-15Mo-5Zr, were prepared by using graphite molds and an arc skull furnace which was of tilting pour type with consumable electrodes, as previously reported. Mechanical and corrosion resistant properties of these castings were studied and compared with those of forged materials. In the case of KS50 and the α alloy, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, there was no significant difference ofmechanical properties between the as-cast and the annealed castings. However, the strength of the α + β alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, in which phase stabilization occured during annealing, was increased by annealing. The hardening and the reduction of ductility due to ω phase formation in the Ti-15Mo-5Zr alloy castings were suppressed by annealing. There was no large difference of mechanical properties between castings and forgings of KS50. However, the Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy castings showed significant decrease of strength, compared to the forged materials, while the Ti-6Al-4V alloy castings showed slight decrease of strength and large reduction of ductility. The inferior properties of the castings seemed to be due to the large grain size. The presence of pin holes in castings of 0.5mm in diameter had a negligibly small effect on the tensile and smooth rupture properties. Annealing of the KS50 and the Ti-15Mo-5Zr alloy castings showed a small effect on the corrosion resistant properties which were, thus, comparable to those of the forged materials. α precipitates due to dendritic micro-segregation were observed in the Ti-15Mo-5Zr alloy castings and were not eliminated by the annealing treatment.

The present lecture is intended to introduce the research works done by the various investigators, concerning on the production of aluminium by means of thermal reduction with carbon.After brief introduction, the possibitily of the reduction of alumina with carbon has been treated theoretically and the energy consumption for the production of crude aluminium has also been illustrated.In the third section, so-called carbide process invented by E. Grünert has been introduced and the semiindustrial furnaces for the production or for the decomposition of aluminium carbide, which are proposed by the Pechiney-Ugine group, has been described.In the fourth section, various methods of extraction of aluminium from thermally reduced crude aluminium alloy, ie. method of distillation, method of separation of the liquid phase centrifugally, method of extraction of aluminium using zinc, magnesium, mercury and lead as the solvent, method of extraction of aluminium as aluminium subchloride and method of electrolysis, have been introduced.
