Pseudocrangonyx shikokunis Akatsuka and Komai, 1922, a poorly known subterranean amphipod, is redescribed and illustrated in detail based on the syntypes from Tokushima Prefecture and four additional specimens from Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Newly found diagnostic features and morphological variation of the species are discussed.

The sea cucumber, Holothuria (Cystipus) dura Cherbonnier and Féral, 1981, previously known only from the Philippines and New Caledonia, is newly recorded from Japanese waters; this is also the first record of the subgenus Cystipus from Japan. The two specimens described here were collected from the sublittoral bottoms near Hahajima island (126–261 m depth) and Okinoshima island (100–120 m depth). The morphology of the Japanese specimens is briefly described. In-situ photographs of the living individuals and scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of ossicles are provided for the first time for this species. The table ossicles in the dorsal body and in the papillae are highly modified fenestrated spheroids that have not been depicted previously. Some of the ventrolateral conical papillae, especially those in the middle part of the body, were bifurcated, perhaps indicative of increased surface area against the bottom for powerful propulsion while ‘walking’. Some notes on locomotion are given, inferred from the in-situ photographs and the morphology of the ventrolateral conical papillae.

Pycnogonids of the species Ammothea hilgendorfi (Bohm, 1879) were found attached to sea-stars, Coscinasterias acutispina (Stimpson, 1882), from the intertidal zone of Hayama, Sagami Bay, Japan. The sea-stars were collected throughout the year, but the pycnogonids were found only between March and August, mostly in April. The pycnogonids attached to the body surface of the sea-stars mainly by clinging to spines of the aboral and lateral sides of the arms. Developmental stages of the pycnogonids attached to the sea-stars comprised the four final juvenile stages as well as adults, but earlier juvenile stages were not found.

The freshwater heteronemertean Apatronemertes albimaculosa Wilfert and Gibson, 1974 has previously been reported from Germany, Austria, and the USA. All these records were from aquarium tanks with commercially distributed tropical and/or subtropical water plants; by hiding among their roots, the worms are thought to have been introduced from an unidentified place of origin. We report the occurrence of A. albimaculosa for the first time from Japan, based on specimens found in private home aquaria for guppy breeding, with a total of 18 species of water plants grown for different periods and lengths of time but not all at the same time. Histological examination confirmed the presence of diagnostic features of this species, including a complex precerebral vascular system and hermaphroditism. The partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (607 bp) of the Japanese material is identical with that of a heteronemertean specimen from a freshwater tank in Madrid, Spain, which had been deposited in the public databases but left unidentified as to its species, genus, or family. Apatronemertes albimaculosa appears unlikely to be able to survive below 10°C for more than about a week, which suggests that its native locality is in the tropics or subtropics, not the temperate zone. The barcoding sequence herein determined will serve in future studies to help locate the natural place of origin.

An octannulate Orobdella leech, Orobdella octonaria Oka, 1895, is redescribed on the basis of one syntype collected from Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, and two newly obtained specimens, also from Hakone. It is distinguished from the other known species of Orobdella by its octannulate mid-body somites. No holotype of this species was originally designated. The present syntype from Hakone is designated as the lectotype of O. octonaria for the purpose of clarifying its taxonomic status and type locality.

Echinoderes ohtsukai sp. nov. is described from an intertidal flat in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, based on observations with light and scanning electron microscopy. Echinoderes ohtsukai is characterized by 1) a short middorsal spine on segment 4; 2) lateroventral tubules on segments 5 and 8; 3) short laterodorsal tubules on segment 10; 4) a trunk 315-395μm long; 5) a lack of lateral terminal accessory spines in both sexes; and 6) lateral terminal spines of about 50% trunk length. The species has modified type-II glandular cell outlets, which have previously been reported among congeners only in E. rex Lundbye, Rho and Sorensen, 2011 from the Korea Strait.

The Parapodisma setouchiensis group (Catantopidae) is revised based on geographic variation in external morphology. This group appears to constitute a single polytypic species, P. setouchiensis Inoue, consisting of four geographic forms (Basic, Mt. Hyonosen, Tanba, and Yamato). Four taxa, Parapodisma tanba, P. yamato, P. hyonosenensis hyonosenensis, and P. hyonosenensis kibi, are treated as junior synonyms of P. setouchiensis. The polarity of character states in the P. setouchiensis group was inferred from the distribution pattern of the geographic forms. All pairs of adjacent forms intergrade through relatively narrow zones that may have originated from secondary contact. In two genital characters (triangular marking and cercus morphology), there are clines with different ranges across the boundary between the Tanba and Mt. Hyonosen forms.

A new genus, Idatenopsocus, represented by Idatenopsocus orientalis (Vishnyakova, 1986), comb, nov., is described and the species is redescribed. Within the family Mesopsocidae, this new genus is considered as the sister group of a monophyletic group composed of the genera Mesopsocus, Microtrichipsocus, Metapsocus, Cyrtopsochus, Hexacyrtoma, and Rhinopsocus.

A new asterinid, Disasterina akajimaensis sp. nov., is described from a specimen collected at Akajima Island, the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. It is clearly distinguishable from its five congeners by the following diagnostic characters: body relatively low and flat, uncalcified interradial areas conspicuous on ventral interradii, papulae numerous in center of disc, abactinal plates mostly lacking spinelets, inferomarginal plates with 2-4 spinelets, actinolateral plates with 1 spine, oral plates with 4-5 oral spines and no suboral spine, adambulacral plates with 1-3 furrows and 1 subambulacral spine. This is the first report of this genus from Japanese waters. Notes on the genus Disasterina and a tabular summary of the characters of the currently known species are also given.

The brackish-water ostracod fauna was surveyed for almost two years at 17 points representing typical environments, such as foreshore sand flat, back marsh, and tidal creek, in the intertidal zone of the Obitsu River Estuary, Chiba Prefecture, central Japan. Twenty-one species belonging to 17 genera and 10 families were identified. In addition to the description of one new genus, Palusleptocythere, and four new species, Pontocythere xiphoidea, Palusleptocythere migrans, Loxoconcha kosugii, and Cytherois ikeyai, chitinous parts are described for the first time for four previously described species, Spinileberis pulchra Chen, 1982, Angulicytherura ? miii (Ishizaki, 1969), Semicytherura wakamurasaki Yajima, 1982, and Loxoconcha pulchra Ishizaki, 1968. Furthermore chitinous parts of male Dolerocypria mukaishimensis Okubo, 1980 are also shown for the first time. This is the first report on an ostracod fauna from a shallow estuarine environment in either Japan or any adjacent area.

The taxonomy of the Trachysalambria curvirostris species group is clarified based on abundant material from East Asia and other localities in the Indo-West Pacific and the Mediterranean. The following six species, including one new species, are recognized : T. curvirostris (Stimpson, 1860), T. longipes (Paulson, 1875), T. aspera (Alcock, 1905), T. palaestinensis (Steinitz, 1932), T. albicoma (Hayashi and Toriyama, 1980), and T. nansei new species. For nomenclatural stability, a neotype of Trachysalambria curvirostris is designated. Species differences are discussed in detail and a key to these species is provided.
