Specimens of the coastal marine fish leech Limnotrachelobdella okae (Moore, 1924) were collected from the pelvic fins and lateral body surface of big-scaled redfin, Pseudaspius hakonensis (Günther, 1877), in two brackish water lakes, Lake Tofutsu and Lake Abashiri, on the Sea of Okhotsk coast, Hokkaido, northern Japan. The external morphology of the specimens is briefly described, and the two lakes represent new locality records for the leech. Similarly to coastal marine waters, inshore brackish water lakes are suggested to be a habitat in which L. okae can complete its life cycle. Seasonal occurrence of the species may differ between subarctic Hokkaido and three temperate regions of Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu). The role of big-scaled redfin and its congener, Pacific redfin, Pseudaspius brandtii (Dybowski, 1872), in transporting L. okae alive from the coastal sea to brackish and fresh water bodies is discussed in terms of their diadromous migration ecology.

The feather mite Pseudalloptinus milvulinus (Trouessart, 1884) was collected from feathers of the Black Kite Milvus migrans (Boddaert, 1783) in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, in 2019. The identification of this mite was based on the form and arrangement of setae on the idiosoma and aggenital region. This study is the first report of this mite species and the genus Pseudalloptinus Dubinin, 1956 in Japan.

Seven specimens (149.0–221.2 mm standard length) of Pristipomoides amoenus (Snyder, 1911), previously known only from Okinawa-jima and Ishigaki-jima islands, southern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, were collected from other regions of Japan (Amami-oshima island, Amami Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture), Taiwan (Dong-gang, Pingtung), the Philippines (Iloilo, Panay Island), and Fiji (Viti Levu Island), thereby representing the first records of the species from outside Okinawa Prefecture. The Amami-oshima and Fijian specimens also represent the northernmost and first Southern Hemisphere records, respectively, for the species. Comparison of these plus newly collected specimens from the southern Ryukyu Islands (herein described in detail) with the closely related species Pristipomoides argyrogrammicus (Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1832) revealed the following hitherto unrecognized diagnostic color features of P. amoenus: a few small silvery-blue blotches present inside yellow saddles on dorsum; small silvery-blue blotches below trunk lateral line absent or indistinct; a distinct line (formed by small silvery-blue blotches) absent on lower caudal peduncle; a large silvery-blue blotch present on upper opercle, extending anteriorly beyond preopercular margin; a line formed by small silvery-blue blotches on upper caudal peduncle ending at upper caudal-fin base; a pair of lines formed by small silvery-blue blotches along dorsal-fin base (dorsal view); a larger pair of elliptical silvery-blue blotches on occipital region (all silvery-blue blotches retained as dark-brown blotches after preservation). Pristipomoides argyrogrammicus is newly recorded from the Tokara Islands, northern Ryukyu Islands, Japan.

Eighteen specimens of Sardinella gibbosa (Bleeker, 1849) collected from Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan represent the first Japanese specimen-based records of the species. All specimens conformed closely to the diagnosis of S. gibbosa, having the caudal fin uniformly pale, a black spot on the dorsal-fin origin, body scales with centrally discontinuous striae, 26−31+50–57=77–88 gill rakers on the first gill arch, and 18 or 19+14 or 15=32–34 keeled scutes along the body ventral surface. In addition, some previous Japanese records of unidentified clupeoid fishes are reviewed.

A single specimen of Bassozetus mozambiquensis Tomiyama, Takami, and Fukui, 2016, collected off southern Brazil in the western South Atlantic and held in the University of Hamburg ichthyological collection, was re-examined. Because the species was previously known only from the western Indian Ocean, solely on the basis of the holotype, the present specimen represents not only the first Atlantic record of the species, but also a ca. 8300 km westward extension of the distributional range. A detailed description of the Atlantic specimen and an updated diagnosis of the species are provided.

A rare copepod parasitic on marine fish, Luetkenia elongata Shiino, 1963 (Siphonostomatoida: Pandaridae), is redescribed based on type specimens and additional specimens obtained from Luvarus imperialis Rafinesque, 1810 caught in the eastern and western North Pacific Ocean off California and Japan, respectively. This represents the first record of this parasite from Japanese waters. The copepod differs from its sole congener, L. asterodermi Claus, 1864, by following features of the female: fourth pedigerous somite with one pair of elongate posterolateral lobes; genital complex bearing a pair of well-developed posterolateral lobes with one conical protuberance on lateral corner; abdomen clearly longer than wide; and caudal rami more than 2.0 times longer than wide.

A new spider species, Cybaeus daimonji, from Kyoto, western-central Honshu, Japan is described based on both sexes. The shape of epigyne indicates that this new species is close to C. communis Yaginuma, 1972, C. kirigaminensis Komatsu, 1963, C. maculosus Yaginuma, 1972 and C. shinkaii (Komatsu, 1970), which are distributed in eastern to central Honshu. Nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1, 28S ribosomal RNA and histone H3 as well as mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 12S ribosomal RNA and 16S ribosomal RNA sequences of the new species are provided for future phylogenetic studies.

A faunal investigation of shallow-water (<50 m) comatulids of the Ashizuri-Uwakai Sea, Shikoku Island, southern Japan was performed between mid-2011 and early 2015, using scuba. It revealed that 30 species of seven families are distributed in the area, including two tropical species, Clarkcomanthus mirabilis (Rowe, Hoggett, Birtles, and Vail, 1986) and Clarkcomanthus mirus (Rowe, Hoggett, Birtles, and Vail, 1986) that are recorded in Japanese waters for the first time, as well as two species recently described during the research. Seventy-five percent of the listed species are tropical species, and 70% are shared with the fauna of the Ryukyu Islands, the southernmost part of Japan. These results agree with the general feature of the Ashizuri-Uwakai Sea in which the biota is strongly influenced by the Kuroshio Current flowing from the south.Key Words:feather stars, marine fauna, new records, Kuroshio Current.

Three species of nemerteans, Balionemertes cf. australiensis Sundberg, Gibson, and Olsson, 2003 (Palaeonemertea), Prosadenoporus olympiae sp. nov. (Hoplonemertea: Eumonostilifera), and Coella gloriae sp. nov. (Hoplonemertea: Polystilifera: Reptantia), are reported based on material collected intertidally at a rocky shore in Cebu Island, Republic of the Philippines. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) barcode sequences of these species have earlier been published elsewhere. The Cebu specimen that is herein identified tentatively as Balionemertes cf. australiensis posseses i) small black dots on the ventral body surface, ii) a neurochord in the lateral nerve, iii) serial rhynchocoelic septa, and iv) nephrostomes, characters that were not mentioned in the original description of the species from Australia; the exact species identification requires barcode sequences from topotypes. Prosadenoporus olympiae can be differentiated morphologically from other congeners by having three accessory-stylet pouches; when alive, worms of this species showed negative hydrotaxis. Coella gloriae differs from all the reptantic polystiliferans by having i) four rows of the eyes, ii) the cephalic furrows, iii) no dorsal marking, iv) separate mouth and proboscis openings, v) blind-ending extracerebral vessels, vi) non-forked fibre core in the dorsal ganglia, vii) the subdorsal nerves, and viii) the cerebral organs partly overlapping the brain.

A rare lizardfish, Synodus mundyi Randall, 2009, is newly reported from the northwestern Pacific around Japan, based on a single specimen (147 mm in standard length) collected from off Muko-jima island of the Ogasawara Islands at a depth of 63 m. Prior to the present study, the species was represented by only the two type specimens collected from the Hawaiian Islands. Among Japanese congeners, it is most similar to the Indo-Pacific Synodus doaki Russell and Cressey, 1979 especially in having a very long nasal flap, but differs notably from the latter in that the tip of the pectoral fin extends well beyond a line connecting the dorsal- and pelvic-fin origins (vs. just reaching this level). The Japanese specimen is fully described, with a color photograph of the fresh specimen. A new standard Japanese name, “Kaede-eso”, is proposed for S. mundyi.

We have described a new genus and five new species of free-living marine flatworms in Schizorhynchia (Platyhelminthes: Rhabdocoela: Kalyptorhynchia) based on the material collected from sandy intertidal zones around Hokkaido, Northern Japan. These include Freddius tricaudatus gen. et sp. nov. (Cheliplanidae) and Proschizorhynchella caudociliata sp. nov., P. magnoliae sp. nov., P. shibazakii sp. nov., and P. shuttlecock sp. nov. (Schizorhynchidae). Based on this study, the number of confirmed species in the suborder Kalyptorhynchia discovered in Japanese waters has increased from one to six. Freddius tricaudatus gen. et sp. nov. possesses proboscis hooks that are so peculiar among Cheliplanidae that they warrant the establishment of a new genus.

Three species of Grandidierella (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Aoridae) were collected from coastal areas of the Tohoku and Kanto-Tokai Districts, East Japan. The first species is G. sanrikuensis sp. nov. from Miyagi Prefecture, which is characterized by the male gnathopod 1 with carpus bearing 3 teeth (only middle tooth large). The second species is G. rubroantennata sp. nov. from Chiba Prefecture. This new species is identical with G. insulae sensu Ariyama (1996), but is different from the true G. insulae Myers, 1981 in the more flagellar articles of the antennae. The last species is G. osakaensis Ariyama, 1996, from river mouths in Kanagawa and Shizuoka Prefectures and an anchialine pool in Izu Oshima Island, Tokyo Prefecture. This species can inhabit various sandy mud bottoms in a brackish environment. Including G. japonica Stephensen, 1938, four Grandidierella species occur in the districts.

A new classification is proposed for the Japanese species of the genus Lumbrinerides Orensanz, 1973 (Annelida: Lumbrineridae), based on the observation of as many specimens as possible so as to determine the extent of intra-populational variation of each morphological character. Morphological differences apparent in material from ten local sites were compared statistically among 16 tentative, operational taxonomic units, the morphologically recognizable units then being subjected to a taxonomic consideration with other known species. By their morphology, five species were recognized from Japanese waters, three being new to science. Diagnoses and descriptions of each species are given.

Pseudorhombus elevatus Ogilby, 1912 and P. quinquocellatus Weber and de Beaufort, 1929 (Teleostei: Paralichthyidae) are newly recorded from Japan, based on 35 and two specimens, respectively, from Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands. Although both species have previously been recorded from Taiwan, no Japanese records are known to date. Pseudorhombus elevatus is characterized, and readily distinguished from Japanese congeners, by numerous minute teeth on both jaws, three dark blotches along the straight section of the ocular-side trunk lateral line, and dorsal- and anal-fin ray numbers. Pseudorhombus quinquocellatus resembles P. pentophthalmus Günther, 1862 and P. oculocirris Amaoka, 1969, all sharing five dark ocelli on the ocular-side body (two pairs of ocelli above and below the lateral line plus a single ocellus on the posterior portion of the lateral line). However, the former is characterized by strong caniniform teeth on both jaws (vs. no strong caniniform teeth in P. pentophthalmus and P. oculocirris); fewer lower gill rakers (9–11 in Japanese specimens) (vs. 15–21); and two dark skin flaps along the gill opening below the pectoral-fin base (vs. absent). The status of the type specimens of P. quinquocellatus was also considered, all three being regarded as syntypes, in the absence of a formal lectotype proposal. New standard Japanese names, “Maru-ganzō-birame” and “Niten-ganzō-birame,” are proposed for P. elevatus and P. quinquocellatus, respectively, the name “Itsutsume-ganzō” now being referred to P. megalops Fowler, 1934.

The taxonomic subdivision of certain Japanese freshwater amphipods into Jesogammarus jesoensis (Schellenberg, 1937), J. hokurikuensis Morino, 1985, J. fujinoi Tomikawa and Morino, 2003, and J. shonaiensis Tomikawa and Morino, 2003 was reassessed using both morphological and molecular data. Putative diagnostic morphological characters did not exhibit consistent geographic distributions, but eight geographically consistent monophyletic clades were detected based on COI and COI+12S rRNA sequence data. Uncorrected COI nucleotide divergences between the clades ranged from 7.0% to 16.4%, a level usually considered to represent inter-specific differences in crustaceans. No morphological features that differentiate the molecular clades were found. While the formal nomenclatural handling of these findings remains a problem for the future, for now we suggest the use of the term “J. jesoensis complex” to represent taxonomic entity consisting of the nominal taxa J. jesoensis, J. fujinoi, J. shonaiensis, and J. hokurikuensis, and potentially a number of hitherto cryptic taxa as well.

Specimens of two species of lernaeopodid copepods, Salmincola edwardsii (Olsson, 1869) and Salmincola markewitschi Shedko and Shedko, 2002, were collected from chars (Salvelinus spp.) reared in exhibition tanks of the Sapporo Salmon Museum, Hokkaido, Japan. Descriptions of these copepods are provided using the specimens. In 1988, adult females of S. edwardsii were found on the gills of southern Asian Dolly Varden, Salvelinus malma krascheninnikova Taranetz, 1933, and those of S. markewitschi in the buccal cavity of whitespotted char, Salvelinus leucomaenis (Pallas, 1814), Nikko char, Salvelinus leucomaenis pluvius (Hilgendorf, 1876), and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill, 1814). These copepods are considered to have been introduced to the museum in the late 1980s along with wild chars transported live from natural waters of Hokkaido. Adult copepods have been manually removed using forceps once or twice a year from reared chars, but such infrequent practices have not been effective to eliminate S. markewitschi, which was thus collected again in 2020. In contrast, S. edwardsii was completely eliminated by stopping rearing an infected population of southern Asian Dolly Varden, to which this parasite is host-specific.

Adult male and larva of Gnathia capitellum sp. nov. (Crustacea: Isopoda: Gnathiidae) are described. The specimens were laboratory-reared larvae that infested host fishes collected by longline fishing in a coastal bay of Izu Peninsula and adult males found in dredge samples from shallow water (depth: 11–12 m) of Miura Peninsula, central Japan. Adult males of G. capitellum sp. nov. were easily distinguished from the other species of Gnathia Leach, 1814 from around the world by the small oval head and the inner margin of pylopod without plumose setae. Most other Gnathia species have a large rectangular head and plumose setae present on the article 1 of pylopod. Appearance of the adult male resembles the genus Afrignathia Hadfield and Smit, 2008 rather than Gnathia but Afrignathia has maxilla 1 which is absent in all known male gnathiids in the world including G. capitellum sp. nov. Fish parasitic larva of G. capitellum sp. nov. is also described herein. This larva closely resembles larvae of the genus Gnathia, but can be distinguished from the other Gnathia species by the remarkably oval-shaped basis in pereopods 2–4.

Adults of caligiform copepods are often found in plankton samples, in addition to the naupliar and copepodid stages. Here, we report on adult parasitic copepods of the families Caligidae and Pandaridae from plankton samples collected in Japanese and Chinese coastal waters. The following previously described species were found in 2008: Caligus calotomi Shiino, 1954; C. orientalis Gusev, 1951; C. undulatus Shen and Li, 1959; Lepeophtheirus semicossyphi Yamaguti, 1939; Metacaligus uruguayensis Thomsen, 1949, and Pandarus satyrus Dana, 1852 in Japanese waters; and C. orientalis and C. rotundigenitalis Yu, 1933 in Chinese waters. The findings of adults of Lepeophtheirus and Metacaligus in plankton samples represent the first such a record for each genus. Two new species of Caligus are also described from plankton taken in Japanese waters in 2008 and 2010. An ovigerous female collected from off Iheya Island, Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa Prefecture is described as Caligus quadrigenitalis sp. nov., and two adult females and a male collected from the Seto Inland Sea and off Hirado Island, Kyushu, western Japan is described as Caligus ogawai sp. nov.
