The East Asian common octopus has long been synonymized with the Atlantic and Mediterranean species Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797. However, evidence from molecular genetic studies has firmly established that the so-called cosmopolitan common octopus is in fact a group of several biogeographically distinct populations which form a complex of species with closely similar morphology. Here, a diagnosis and brief description are provided which distinguish the East Asian common octopus from O. vulgaris, and as a suitable name for it a former junior synonym of O. vulgaris is identified as a valid species: Octopus sinensis d'Orbigny, 1841. A neotype is designated. Voucher material includes specimens collected in Japan by Philipp Franz von Siebold and deposited in the National Museum of Natural History - Naturalis - in Leiden; and others that were studied by Madoka Sasaki in preparation for the detailed description of this species (as O. vulgaris) in a monograph on Japanese Cephalopoda published in 1929. At present, all species in this complex (particularly O. vulgaris and the East Asian species here identified as O. sinensis) are highly vulnerable to overfishing, so recognizing O. sinensis as a species distinct from O. vulgaris is an important step towards improving sustainable fisheries management policies for each species in this group of commercially valuable octopuses.

We describe Parakonarus kajii sp. nov. from near Iriomote Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. This is the first record of Parakonarus from the North Pacific. As members in this genus show great sexual dimorphism, we checked our male and female specimens for conspecificity by using partial sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The two individuals differed by two nucleotide substitutions in 661 nt (0.3% K2P distance), indicating they are the same species. This species closely resembles P. kopure reported from New Zealand, but differs in having the ventral process on the chelipedal carpus longer than wide, the inner comb-row on the chelipedal propodus composed of 16 setae, and the dactylus and unguis of pereopods 4–6 fused in the male; and the carpi of pereopods 2 and 3 without a ventrodistal spiniform seta, the propodal palm of the cheliped with two inner simple setae at the insertion of the dactylus, and article 2 of the maxillipedal palp with one mid-outer and one outer distal simple setae in the female. On the inner surface of the chelipeds in male P. kajii, we observed an elongate plate-like structure that could be a reduced ischium.

Tanarctus ittanmomen sp. nov. (Heterotardigrada: Arthrotardigrada: Tanarctidae) is described based on specimens collected at Ohama Beach, Miyato-jima, Oku-Matsushima, Japan. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by its characteristic leg IV appendages. Each appendage consists of one long main branch, usually more than double the body length, with varying numbers of flexible, mostly long secondary branches. All branches have blunt tips.

The taxonomic status of the two Japanese species of the spider genus Cybaeus L. Koch, 1868, viz., C. communis Yaginuma, 1972 and C. maculosus Yaginuma, 1972, is revisited on the basis of male and female specimens, which were collected from each type locality and the adjacent areas, along with the holotypes of both species. Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1 sequence data confirmed that C. communis and C. maculosus are conspecific, and C. maculosus is synonymized with C. communis. The obtained molecular phylogenies corroborate the monophyly of C. communis, C. kirigaminensis Komatsu, 1963, C. shinkaii (Komatsu, 1970), and C. daimonji Matsuda, Ihara, and Nakano, 2020.

A copepod, Pseudanthessius chuukensis Uyeno, n. sp. (Cyclopoida: Pseudanthessiidae), is described based on the type specimen obtained from the grouper Epinephelus sp. (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Serranidae) caught in Chuuk Lagoon (North Pacific Ocean), Federated States of Micronesia, North Pacific Ocean. The copepod differs from its congeners in the following female characters: the urosome is 5-segmented; caudal rami are five to six times longer than wide; the distal endopodal segment of leg 1 carries three spines and three setae; leg 4 endopod has two setae, without proximal swellings, and as long as about two-third of that of the exopod. This finding of the copepod is the first record of the family Pseudanthessiidae from the actinopterygian fish.

A new species of the genus Travisia Johnson, 1840, the single genus of the family Travisiidae, is described. Specimens of Travisia sanrikuensis sp. nov. were collected in the Sanriku region, Japan, from the lower bathyal zone (871–1684 m depth) of the northwestern Pacific. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on partial 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the new species is phylogenetically close to Travisia brevis Moore, 1923, but differs from all congeneric species by the following morphological characters: 25 segments, 20 chaetigers, and 19–20 pairs of cirriform branchiae starting from chaetiger 2.

A new species of ostracod, Semicytherura sagittiformis sp. nov., is described from a sandy beach in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan. It lives in pore-waters of marine sandy sediments and is ecologically associated with other interstitial ostracods (e.g., Parapolycope and Microloxoconcha). Semicytherura sagittiformis is one of the smallest species in the genus Semicytherura, and its carapace size is comparable with those of some large interstitial ostracods. This fact suggests that a small carapace is the most important character for adaptation of ostracods to an interstitial environment.

Five specimens (41.2–47.0 mm standard length) of the Indo-Pacific species Bulbonaricus davaoensis (Herald, 1953), previously recorded from Kenya, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Fiji, were collected from Okinoerabu Island, Amami Islands, Ryukyu Islands and Chichi Island, Ogasawara Islands. The specimens represent the first Japanese and northernmost (Okinoerabu Island) records of the species. A detailed description is given for the specimens and the new standard Japanese name “Shuuyajiri-chin’yojiuo” is proposed for the species. Photographs of fresh metamorphosed adult specimens, a fresh larval specimen, and live individuals of B. davaoensis are provided.

A new dendrochirotid sea cucumber, Massinium japonicum sp. nov., is described from areas in western Japan, including the middle of the Seto Inland Sea, west of the Sea of Japan, the shore of the Amakusa Peninsula, and the shore of the Kii Peninsula. The ossicle assemblage of the new species (M. japonicum) is similar to that of M. maculosum Samyn and Thandar, 2003, the type species of Massinium Samyn and Thandar, 2003. However, the new species is readily distinguishable from M. maculosum and its congeners by the absence of rod/elongated rosette ossicles in the tentacles. The tentacle ossicles of the new species comprise only oval, simple, open rosettes, 20–40 µm in length, while the other congeners possess rods/elongated rosette-shaped ossicles in the tentacles (very rarely also table ossicles). This new species has been collected from the shallow waters of western Japan living amongst boulder area in the intertidal-subtidal zone, at a depth of approximately 0–20 m.

We describe a new species of ilyplanid polyclad, Zygantroides serpulidicola sp. nov., from Amakusa, Kumamoto, Japan. This is the third member of Zygantroides Faubel, 1983 and the first record of the genus from the Pacific Ocean. Zygantroides serpulidicola sp. nov. is characterized by i) the mouth opening near the common gonopore, ii) the sperm ducts separately entering a pear-shaped seminal vesicle, iii) an elongated Lang’s-vesicle duct, and iv) the horseshoe-shaped Lang’s vesicle located posterior to the common gonopore. We provide a partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene (712 bp) as a DNA barcode for the species. Our phylogenetic analyses based on concatenated sequences of the 16S, 18S, and 28S ribosomal DNA and COI indicate that Z. serpulidicola sp. nov. is nested in a clade comprised of Discocelidae and Ilyplanidae; the latter does not appear to be monophyletic.

A new nematode species, Rhabdias kiri sp. nov., which is a lung parasite in a microhylid frog Microhyla okinavensis Stejneger, 1901 from Ishigakijima island in the Yaeyama Islands of Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan is described and illustrated. This new species differs from other congeners inhabiting East Asia and the Russian Far East in its features: i.e., shorter body length, slender body shape, narrower and shallower buccal capsule, shorter head diameter and cuticular inflation less prominent in the anterior and middle parts of the body. This is the first record of a frog parasite in Rhabdias from the Yaeyama Islands. Partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 12S rDNA genes were provided as DNA barcodes for the new species.

We describe Teleotanais madara sp. nov. from the surfaces of mangrove roots on mudflats at Iriomote Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. This is the first record of any teleotanaid species from the northwestern Pacific. Teleotanais madara resembles T. gerlachi and T. gerlachi sensu Sieg (1976), but differs in having a mid-inner simple seta on antennular article 2, two ventral setae on the basal article of the uropod, the chelipedal fixed finger with one or two ventral simple setae, ventrodistal simple setae on the perepod-1 merus being half as long as the width of the merus, and the dactylus–unguis of pereopods 4–6 articulate. We also present the nucleotide sequence for part of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene in T. madara for future use in DNA barcoding and phylogeny.

We establish the new anarthrurid genus Tsuranarthrura gen. nov. based on the new species T. shinsei sp. nov. collected from 1890 m depth off the eastern coast of Japan, northwestern Pacific Ocean. Tsuranarthrura gen. nov. is the third paratanaoid genus with members having a fused segment composed of pereonite 6 and the pleon, a character state previously restricted to the genera Coalecerotanais Larsen, 2003 (Family incertae sedis) and Metagathotanais Bird and Holdich, 1988 (Family Agathotanaidae). Among anarthrurid genera, Tsuranarthrura gen. nov. is similar to Anarthrura Sars, 1882, Anarthrurella Bird, 2004, and Crenicarpus Drumm and Bird, 2016 in having the labrum not laterally compressed and the antenna with naked fourth and fifth articles from the distal end. However it differs from the latter three in having pereonite 6 fused with the pleon, the maxillipedal endite with a distal seta, the chelipedal merus with a ventral simple seta, and the merus naked on pereopods 2 and 3. We also present the nucleotide sequence for part of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene in T. shinsei for future use in DNA barcoding or phylogeny.

The lernaeopodid copepod Tracheliastes sachalinensis Markevich, 1936 was found on the fins of three species of the subfamily Leuciscinae Bonaparte, 1846 (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae): big-scaled redfin, Tribolodon hakonensis (Günther, 1877); Sakhalin redfin, Tribolodon sachalinensis (Nikolskii, 1899); and lake minnow Rhynchocypris percnurus (Pallas, 1814); collected in three lakes (Lake Tôro, Lake Shirarutoro, and Lake Abashiri) and two rivers (Mena River and Jirô-sawa River), Hokkaido, northern Japan. These findings represent the first records of Tracheliastes sachalinensis from Japan and also from outside of Russia, in which the copepod has hitherto been found. The species is specific to leuciscine fishes in the subarctic region of the Russian Far East and Japan. We also provide a review of parasitic copepods of freshwater fishes from Hokkaido.

Dactylogyrus oryziasi n. sp. (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) is described from the gills of the southern medaka Oryzias latipes (Temminck and Schlegel, 1846) (Beloniformes: Adrianichthyidae) collected from an irrigation canal, Tokushima city, Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku, Japan. This new species resembles Dactylogyrus rysavyi Ergens, 1970 in having a coiled penis passing through a tube of an accessory piece associated with a sigmoid rod, and shapes of haptoral parts, but these species differ from each other by turns of the penis and a connection point between the rod and tube of the accessory piece. This is the first record of Dactylogyrus from beloniform fish.

In Japan, the native population of the Oriental White Stork Ciconia boyciana Swinhoe, 1873 had been extinct in 1986, when the last captured stork died in a breeding facility. Later on, some wild or bred storks from Russia and mainland China (clear origin unknown) were transported to Japan, and their descendants were repeatedly released into natural fields to establish wild populations in this country. In this study, the feather mite Pelargolichus orientalis Waki, Mironov, and Shimano, 2023 has been collected from a taxidermy specimen of the Oriental White Stork belonging to a Japanese native population and preserved in the Himeji City Science Museum, Japan. Pelargolichus orientalis is the only feather mite species detected and described from the introduced storks bred in a Japanese zoo in our previous study. The present study shows that P. orientalis did occur in the Japanese native host population.

The monotypic polynoid genus Arctonoella Buzhinskaja, 1967 comprises solely the type species A. sinagawaensis (Izuka, 1912), which was originally described from Tokyo Bay (central Japan), and subsequently recorded from China and the Russian Far East. The six specimens we collected together with the burrowing filter-feeding spoon worm Urechis unicinctus (Drasche, 1880) from three intertidal-flat sites in the Seto Inland Sea represent a new report for the western Japan, and the second for the country. Our morphological observations reveal that the shape of the cephalic peaks in the frontal prostomial margin is variable even within a local population, although this character has been considered as diagnostic for Arctonoella. This genus is closely related with Hesperonoe Chamberlin, 1919, both morphologically and phylogenetically. Hesperonoe urechis Marin and Antokhina, 2020, collected inside a burrow of U. unicinctus in the Russian Far East, is hereby deemed a junior synonym of A. sinagawaensis. This species morphologically resembles Hesperonoe adventor (Skogsberg in Fisher and MacGinitie, 1928), which inhabits spoon worm (Urechis caupo Fisher and MacGinitie, 1928 and Echiurus echiurus alaskanus Fisher, 1946) burrows along the northeastern Pacific coast of America. Therefore, we conclude that the Arctonoella-Hesperonoe species complex requires to be reviewed to determine the proper generic arrangement. Additionally, we revise the available data on the symbiotic fauna living inside the burrows of U. unicinctus and U. caupo.

The cystidicolid nematode Salvelinema walkeri (Ekbaum, 1935) is a swim bladder parasite of freshwater salmonids in western North America, ranging from northern California to southern British Columbia. This parasite was found from two age-2.0, juvenile coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum, 1792) caught in the southern central Gulf of Alaska in December 1992. This represents the first record of S. walkeri from salmonids caught in offshore waters of the North Pacific Ocean. The two coho salmon harbored as many as 1053 and 278 nematodes, respectively, but there was no significant difference in the condition factor between infected and uninfected fish. The recovered nematodes are highly likely to have been alive in the host swim bladder when the fish were caught because their bodies were in good condition. Based on the observations in this and other papers, S. walkeri is inferred to survive throughout marine residence of salmonids after these fish are infected in streams and enter the sea. While the usefulness of S. walkeri as a stock discrimination tool is less than that of current methods employed for a similar purpose, the potential use of this freshwater parasite as a biological tag is also discussed for studying the ecology of ocean-migrating salmonids.
