This paper re-examines the reforms of the Kumamoto Domain in the third year of the Meiji Restoration period (hereafter: the year-three reforms), which are well known as an archetypal example of domain reforms that occurred from the Meiji Restoration period to the mid-1950s. The paper begins with a thorough review of previous studies; this literature review confirms that the research perspectives on the year-three reforms have broadened since the 1980s. At that time, social and regional histories became mainstream. Furthermore, this paper argues that it is necessary to conduct a political reexamination of the year-three reforms while using the results of previous research. Accordingly, this paper verifies that another plan existed in the civil administration at the beginning of the year-three reforms in addition to the plan created by Tokutomi Kazutaka and Takezaki Ritsujiro who are already well known in part for having actually executed the plan and analyzing the newly released Doukeke Monjo. This is the first paper to clarify that Kinoshita Sukeyuki drafted the other plan and that Tokutomi and Takezaki's plan was chosen as a result of a policy competition that included both the plans. Additionally, this paper emphasizes that is possible to connect Kinoshita's plan with the results of regional and social research in the field of Kumamoto Domain, which has been gathering attention in recent years, and also indicates the future importance of a perspective that directly ties political history and regional and social history together.

This paper reports the results of a survey and analysis of reconstruction slogans such as "Ganbarou! Kumamoto" (Let's not give up! Kumamoto) seen in the linguistic landscape following the Kumamoto Earthquake of April 2016. In this survey, 118 notices exhibiting reconstruction slogans were gathered from June 2016 to April 2018 from shopping districts in the center of Kumamoto city. An analysis of these notices led to the following conclusions: (1) over the year after the earthquake, the number of notices with reconstruction slogans decreased significantly, then slightly increased after a year, and again decreased gradually; (2) case studies of reconstruction slogans following the Great East Japan Earthquake exhibited similarities with the results of this survey, including the basic structure of the slogans as "verb+sentence-final expression+place name."

There were approximately 20,000 pigs running free on the streets in Antebellum New York City. This article examines the reason for the presence of so many pigs, what significance they had for urban environment, and the opinions that the residents had about the pigs. This would shed new lights on the role of class, race, ethnicity, and gender relations in urban society and politics during times of development and change.
