旧海軍は転換期である幕末に洋式海軍としてその前身が創出され, 明治になって本史に入り, 興隆し, 転換期である第二次大戦終結で消滅したから, その歴史には転換期の全局面が凝縮されている.この観点からの旧海軍史研究は, 現在進行中の空前の文明史的転換に対処する参考になる筈である.造機技術に注目すると, 旧海軍は世界的な大艦巨砲主義の影響下で, ボイラ, タービン, 内燃機関, 燃料燃焼, 製鉄鉄鋼, 工程管理などを, まるごと輸入からほぼ完全な自立にまで仕上げた.その技術は, 戦前戦中に海軍の直接影響下にあった設備と人材を継承した戦後の造船業, 鉄鋼業はもちろん, 電力産業や石油石炭産業などエネルギー産業, その機器製造業などにも流入している.最近, 一般には滅失したとされている旧海軍造機技術資料中心の4209点の整理事業が完了し, 渋谷文庫が成立した.これを記念し, 古い史料を使って新観点から歴史を研究する意義と方法の考察に立脚し, 今後の研究領域例として次の3例をあげた.(1) 技術発達の方向性 (2) 危機管理 (3) 技術の社会学

In our expectation, the demand of natural gas will increase follow the increase in demand of energy around the world. However many small gas fields and associated gas don't put to practical use, because the transportation cost for the construction of pipeline and any establishment is bulky on utilization of gas fuel. In many cases, the way for convert the natural gas into liquid fuel on the floating vessel is favorable, allowing for the estimated amount, because these gas fields are far from consumptive area. One of these ways is the floating methanol production system. The technology of floating plant has developed follow the oil production, and has given many actual result as the oil plant, but not as the methanol production system.In our research, we gave the feasibility study for floating methanol production system (FMPS), proved flexibility, safety and reliability of the floating plant toward technology of methanol production, designed FMPS plant and estimated the cost of methanol production in this case, in order to effective utilization of off-shore small scale gas fields and associated gas. Moreover, we proposed to test by running the demonstration plant on the sea for setting up a foundation and proving the technical reliability of this technology.

The world's first ADD30V medium speed diesel engines were produced and delivered for marine and stationary applications by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. under the license of ADD Inc., Japan.This engine achieves extremely high power with B.M.E.P up to 2.7MPa and mean piston speed up to 12m/s, coupled with light weight and space saving compactness. In addition, high reliability as well as low fuel oil consumption is obtained.This paper describes the design features of principal components, such as the welded integral engine frame of steel modules, the crankshaft with cold-rolled fillets coupled with induction hardening, the piston of diffusion-bonded integral, the cylinder liner and the piston rings coated with wear-resistant ceramic, the singlevalve gas exchanging system, etc., which enable the ADD30V engine to achieve the above advantages under the extremely high power.Finally, the engine performance and the operating results are described on the basis of actual test results.

The exhaust gas economizer is one of the most efficient measures for the exhaust heat recovery of the Diesel ship. In responding the strong demand of the fuel conservation, various advanced plants with turbo-generating system have been developed and have been successfully installed onto the Diesel ships in service. In spite of the difficulties of the decreasing gas temperature, the decreasing gas flow rate, the severe deterioration of fuel grade, etc., those newly developed plants have achieved the remarkable improvement of the exhaust heat recovery rate in comparison with the plants in the age of 1969. The main technological features of the advanced plants are the followings, that is, the first is the introduction of two-or three-stage pressure system, the second is the use of extended heating surface, and the third is the designs of various countermeasures against the low temperature fouling and corrosion. These features, however, have brought not only desirable improvements but also undesirable impacts such as the damage of generating tubes, the soot fire etc. Although most of impacts have already been overcomed, the soot fire, which is the most impressive and serious fault, is still troubling the people concerned and is demanding the reliable solution.

With the increased emphasis on energy conservation and fuel economy, the development of energy-storage devices has gained considerable momentum. Flywheelss have potential applications in various fixed-base applications, such as wind- and solar-energy generations and utility load leveling. The application of a flywheel energy storage system to marine engines is tentatively evaluated based on the current technology level, in particular, the size of rotors made of homogeneous metal alloys and of composite materials is determined for the gross tonnage of ships and their voyage distance. The flywheel on the ship, which is subjected to ocean waves and maneuvering, gives rise to the gyrodynamic effect. The influences of the reactions caused by this effect on the motion of the ship are analyzed.

Marine use turbine-generators in Japan have remarkably developed concerning their reliability, overall turbine efficiency, operation easiness, governing performance and heat recovery system, etc.This paper explains the technological progress of marine use turbine-generator in Japan since 1911, when Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipbuilding Co. (present Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Co.) completed 1st unit of Parsons' type steam turbine for 200 kW DC generator.Summary of historical topics on marine turbo-generator is listed in the table.In 1982, Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Co. completed the mixed pressure type turbine-generator for motorship, and they are efficiently operated on board.About seventy years have passed since 1911, and we can keep in mind of various efforts which led to modern turbine-generators.
