Zodariid spiders of the genera Asceua Thorell, 1887, Mallinella Strand, 1906, and Akyttara Jocque, 1987, obtained from Dambri in Lam Dong Province, southern Vietnam, are reported. Four new species are described under the names, Asceua piperata, Mallinella momoina, Mallinella dambrica and Akyttara odorocci. The holotype (female) of Asceua torquata (Simon, 1909) described from Hanoi, northern Vietnam, was re-examined and illustrated for a comparison with the new species. Both the Asceua species closely resemble each other in the shape of epigynum. Mallinella dambrica seems to be related to M. klossi (Hogg, 1922) known from Lang Biang, about 100km apart from Dambri in a northeastern direction, while M. momoina shows peculiar characters in the genus, especially those of the structure of female genitalia. The genus Akyttara was discovered in Asia for the first time.

This is the second part of the report on the galatheidean Crustacea taken by the R/V Soyo-Maru in the deeper parts of the Japanese waters. The collection of the Galatheidae comprises 9 species, two of which are new and five of which are recorded for the first time from the Japanese waters. The reader is referred to the introduction of the previous article (BABA, 1981) for the source of material and the brief notes on the distribution of the Japanese deep-sea Galatheidae as well as the Chirostylidae. I thank Dr. T. OKUTANI and Dr. M. TAKEDA of the National Science Museum, Tokyo, for making this collection available to me; Dr. F. A. CHACE, Jr. of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C., for kindly allowing me to have access to the identified specimens deposited in the Crustacea Division of the National Museum of Natural History; Dr. R. B. MANNING of the same Institution, for arranging at my request the loan of the Atlantic specimens of Munida microphthalma, providing me with copies of the paper by FILHOL (1884), and suggesting to me the correct original citation of Munidopsis antonii; Dr. L. B. HOLTHUIS of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlike Historie, Leiden, for answering my inquiry about the original citation of M. antonii.

The pufferfish genus Fugu ABE, 1952,which has long been used by many authors, is a junior subjective synonym of Takifugu ABE, 1949. Higanfugu ABE, 1949 is similarly included in the synonymy of Takifugu ABE, whereas Shippofugu ABE, 1949 is more correctly included in the synonymy of Torquigener WHITLEY, 1930. Comments are also made on the status of the type species of all of the remaining generic and subgeneric categories erected by ABE in 1939,1949,1950,1952 and 1954.

A new species of red-toothed shrew belonging to the caecutiens-arcticus section of the Sorex minutus group is described from Sado Island, under the name Sorex sadonis, The species is similar to Sorex arcticus KERR, 1792 in having a large skull and massive teeth, but the 2nd lower tooth has a secondary cusp and the lateral pelage is much darker than the ventral. This species is easily distinguished from Sorex shinto shinto THOMAS, 1905 from Honshu, Sorex shinto saevus THOMAS, 1907 from Hokkaido, and Sorex shinto shikokensis ABE, 1967 from Shikoku, Japan, by the much bigger claws of the forefoot and the decidedly darker coloration.

The genus Spinarge, previously represented by three Chinese species, is redefined to include 11 Palaearctic species, and is transferred from the Athermantini to the Argini of the Arginae. This genus is characterized by the fifth abdominal tergum with a dark median line (=inconspicuous median groove) in the female and a long median process in the male. A key to the world species and descriptions or redescriptions of the following nine species are given: S. affinis sp. nov. from Japan, S. chrysoptera (Gussakovskij, 1935), comb. nov. from China, S. fulvicornis (Mocsary, 1909), comb. nov. from Japan, Korea and China, S. flavicostalis sp. nov. from Japan, S. metallica (Klug, 1834), comb. nov. from Europe to Kamchatka, Primorskij kraj, Sakhalin and Korea, S. nigricornis sp. nov. from Japan, S. prunivora sp. nov. from Japan and Korea, S. pumila sp. nov. from Japan, and S. sichuanensis Wei, 1998, from China. Larvae are gregarious leaf feeders on broad-leaved trees such as Betula, Prunus and Sorbus.

A minute caenogastropod snail, Amphithalamus (Amphithalamus) fulcira (LASERON, 1956) was recorded for the first time from the tropical to temperate regions of Japanese waters. The shell, radula and external morphology of the soft part were described in detail, and the distribution of the species in the Japanese waters was demonstrated. This is the first record of the family Anabathronidae not only from the Japanese waters, but also from the Northwest Pacific.

A new species of the genus Mogera is described from the Echigo Plain in central Japan under the name of Mogera etigo. It is similar to M. tokudae from Sado Island in such primitive characters as vertebral formula and shape of muzzle pad, but is different from M. tokudae in much larger relative values of body and cranial dimensions, larger manus, and smaller upper and lower second premolars, the last feature of which seems to indicate relatively advanced stage of evolution.

Juveniles of a rare callanthiid fish genus Grammatonotus are described based on six specimens (18.6-22.8 mm SL) from Tosa Bay, Pacific coast off Shikoku Island, Japan; the occurrence represents the first record of Grammatonotus juveniles from the northern Pacific. Although we could not determine their certain species name, they were most probably identical with G. surugaensis, based on geographic distribution and osteological characters. The characters useful for identification of the juveniles of Grammatonotus are discussed with other Grammatonotus juvenile specimens from other areas.

A specimen of a remarkable triggerfish (Balistidae) was found in the stomach contents of the marlinfish Makaira mazara (Istiophoridae) collected from off the Marianas Islands on July 9,1960. It is readily distinguishable from all other balistids by having great protuberances just below the pectoral fins. Since this unusual cahracter is not found in any other balistid, a dissection was made to ascertain if this specimen had any unique internal characters. Although the viscera of the specimen were completely digested by the stomach of M. mazara, the skeleton was still in good condition and shows uniqueness in the pectoral girdle, skull and the first dorsal fin. Thus, the specimen is here described as a new genus and species under the name of Xenobalistes tumidipectoris. The holotype, only known specimen, is deposited in the fish collection of the National Science Museum, Tokyo (NSMT-P).

To improve knowledge of school structure of killer whale, Orcinus orca (LINNAEUS, 1758), the composition of 18 schools (705 individuals in total) were analyzed from the sighting information obtained through a 57-day sighting survey in the Southern Ocean between 115°E and 160°W. The fundamental units of the school of killer whales are considered to be the single adult male, the adult female with calf, and other whales including the juvenile whale and/or the adult female without calf. An aggregation of schools seems to be formed by combination of several large schools, each of which has some unit schools.
