A new species of the subgenus Lutra BRISSON, 1762,of the genus Lutra is described from Shikoku in Japan under the name of L. nippon. It is a primitive species with relatively long tail and long facial portion of cranium among the Eurasian species of the subgenus Lutra.

小型哺乳類の側溝への落下状況を明らかにすることを目的とし,静岡県富士宮市にある水が常時流れている約1.5 kmの側溝(深さ45 cm × 幅45 cm,水深10~25 cm,流速約1.3~1.6 m/s)において,2001年6月から2004年9月の間に落下個体調査を131日行った.その結果,食虫目6種,齧歯目7種,合計2目3科13種152個体の落下・死亡個体が確認でき,側溝への落下は1日あたり平均1.16個体の頻度で起きていることが明らかになった.落下していた種は周辺に生息する小型哺乳類種の種数81%に及び,その中にはミズラモグラ(Euroscaptor mizura)などの準絶滅危惧種も含まれていた.また,ハタネズミ(Microtus montebelli)の落下が植林地より牧草地において顕著に多くみられ,落下する種は側溝周辺の小型哺乳類相を反映していると思われた.側溝への落下には季節性がみられ,それぞれの種の繁殖期と関連している可能性が示唆された.以上のことから,このような側溝を開放状態のまま放置しておくのは小動物にとって危険であり,側溝への落下防止策および脱出対策を講じる必要があると考える.

A new species of red-toothed shrew belonging to the caecutiens-arcticus section of the Sorex minutus group is described from Sado Island, under the name Sorex sadonis, The species is similar to Sorex arcticus KERR, 1792 in having a large skull and massive teeth, but the 2nd lower tooth has a secondary cusp and the lateral pelage is much darker than the ventral. This species is easily distinguished from Sorex shinto shinto THOMAS, 1905 from Honshu, Sorex shinto saevus THOMAS, 1907 from Hokkaido, and Sorex shinto shikokensis ABE, 1967 from Shikoku, Japan, by the much bigger claws of the forefoot and the decidedly darker coloration.

Among the characters generally employed as important key characters, the shapes of posterior border of rhinarium, breadth of rostrum and strength of postorbital constriction, strength of postorbital processes, and number of premolars seem to be considerably variable. They must be treated carefully in the course of taxonomic identification.

We collected many specimens of WATASE's shrew, Crocidura watasei KURODA, 1924 from Amami, Kikai, Tokunoshima, Okierabu and Yoron Islands by hand-made live traps. 60(W)×180(L)×50(H) mm in size. Among them, the species has not been hitherto recorded from Kikai Island, but in December of 1989 we collected five specimens of this species from sugar-cane farm in this island. As the results of comparison among six island populations of Crocidura, it became clear that these populations belong to the same taxon, C. watasei. We collected WATASE's shrew from barren land, bank and sugar-cane farm, but could not obtain them in glass land in a mountain and broadleaf forest. The species seems to be most common in sugarcane farm.

A new species of the genus Mogera is described from the Echigo Plain in central Japan under the name of Mogera etigo. It is similar to M. tokudae from Sado Island in such primitive characters as vertebral formula and shape of muzzle pad, but is different from M. tokudae in much larger relative values of body and cranial dimensions, larger manus, and smaller upper and lower second premolars, the last feature of which seems to indicate relatively advanced stage of evolution.

A new species of whiskered bat belonging to the subgenus Selysius is described from the forest on Petegari, Poroshiri and Rakko of the Hidaka Mountains, Hokkaido, under the name Myotis yesoensis. This species is sympatric with Myotis gracilis on these mountains. It is easily distinguished from the latter by the shorter ear, bicolored dorsal fur, and the obtuse anteorbital ridge.

A new species of Rhinolophus from Iriomote Island, Yayeyama Islands, south Ryukyu Islands is diagnosed and described as R. imaizumii, closely related to R. cognatus from the Andaman Islands. The Asiatic species of the R. pusillus group to which it belongs are keyed and briefly discussed, with diagnostic and distributional notes.

北海道の西南方, 奥尻島に生息する野生ほ乳類としては, これまで, ネズミ科のエゾアカネズミApodemus speciosus ainu (THOMAS, 1906)しか記録がなかった。このたび, イヌ科のタヌキNyctereutes procyonoides GRAY, 184 1834が採集された。この島から初めての記録である。筆者は奥尻島のタヌキが北海道, 本州, 九州の個体群のどれに類似しているか, 外部, 頭骨, 肩甲骨, 仙椎, 陰茎骨などの形態を用いて, 分類学的に比較検討した。奥尻島個体群は, その冬毛の背毛長が平均87.8mm, 宮崎の個体群のそれは54.3mmで, 両者の間に顕著な差異が認められる。それだけでなく, 頭骨では上顎第1臼歯間の距離(歯冠部の内端間の最短距離)が本州, 宮崎産のものより大きい。この形質における奥尻個体群と北海道, 本州, 九州の8個体群間の差異係数について類似関係を求めた結果, それらが2群を形成することが判明した。I群には奥尻島および北海道個体群が含まれ, II群には本州と九州の7個体群が含まれる。I群とII群間の差異係数は1.331である。 また, 奥尻島・北海道個体群は本州・九州の個体群より仙骨が顕著に長く, 頑丈である。これらの形質は年齢や雌雄による変異が少いと考えられる。陰茎骨には年齢よる顕著な差が認められるが, 同年齢とおもわれる奥尻島と宮崎のものの陰茎骨では, 奥尻島のもので発達が悪いことが認められた。また, 仙椎の大きさは年齢や性による変異が少ないようにおもわれたので, 奥尻島のものと本州や宮崎のものと比較したところ, 前者が顕著に大きい傾向がみられた。これらの肩甲骨は年齢による変異が顕著であるが, たがいによく似ている。 以上の結果, 奥尻島の個体群は, 北海道のエゾタヌキNyctereutes procyonoides albus BEARD, 1904と同じ分類群に属すると認めるのが妥当と考えられる。エゾタヌキはニューヨークの動物園で飼育されていた白色型の生きた個体に基づいて命名されたもので, 基準標本の指定がなく, その所在も明確ではない。

A new subspecies of the least red-toothed shrew, Sorex minutissimus ZIMMERMANN, 1780,is described from Korea under the name of S. m. ishikawai. It is the largest subspecies of the species, and seems closest to the Hokkaido subspecies, S. m. hawkeri THOMAS, 1906.
