This paper discusses the suppression of torque ripples in motor drives. Current ripples caused by pulse-width modulation with frequencies of 10-100kHz can be reduced by using high-frequency switching. On the other hand, current ripples caused by dead-times with 6kth-order ripples of fundamental frequencies increase with the switching frequency. Therefore, there is a trade-off relationship between the two ripples. To compensate for dead-times, feedforward compensation is widely used. However, effective compensation cannot be achieved if the feedforward compensation values contain modeling errors. This paper therefore reveals that the robustness of the output torque against compensation errors can be improved by using multilevel inverters. The proposed method is validated through simulations and experimental results.

This paper discusses the suppression of torque ripple using multi-level inverters in motor drives. Because it is possible to improve the output waveforms using multi-level inverters, it is also possible to improve the control performance of motors. In this paper, the multi-level inverters achieve precise motion control, and a theoretical distortion index for multi-level motor drives that takes the control sensitivity into account is proposed. By calculating the distortion index, the optimal equivalent carrier frequency that can minimize torque ripple can be obtained. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by our experimental results.

In the field of high precision positioning control, the position servo system must be highly robust against disturbance torque. A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) has various torque ripple components that degrade control performance. A portion of the torque ripple is caused by the harmonic current. The torque ripple can be suppressed using a highly robust current control system. The remaining torque ripple is defined as the disturbance torque and is compensated for using a Disturbance OBserver (DOB). However, it is very difficult for a DOB to perform the appropriate compensation because it uses a low-pass filter to reduce noise. To obtain highly robust performance, this paper proposes a new position servo system using a disturbance torque hybrid observer and a current control system in the α-β stationary frame. In addition, this paper uses the torque ripple equation instead of a torque ripple table so as to reduce the amount of Digital Signal Processor (DSP) memory. The effectiveness of the proposed position servo system is confirmed using numerical and experimental results.

This paper proposes a fast and robust nonlinear deadbeat control for boost DC-DC converters. First, the nonlinear state equation is derived, and second a nonlinear current reference deadbeat control is proposed. Third, a new nonlinear controller to implement the load disturbance compensation is proposed. After the simulations and verification by experiments, it was confirmed that under the conditions of an input voltage of 12V, an output voltage of 20V, a load resistance of 4Ω and a sampling frequency of 100kHz, the voltage command tracking capability of a settling time of 280µs was achieved, and an output voltage recovery time of 1.46ms was achieved for a sudden load change.

In order to improve control performance in various control fields, it is important to model the controlled object accurately. In this case, the quality of the model is considerably influenced by the structure of the model determined by the engineer. An element description method is a method that can optimize not only parameters but also the structure of the model. Therefore, it is possible to search over a wide range without being restricted by human design. However, this considerably increases the search space, and it is easy to fall into a local solution. In this study, the artificial bee colony algorithm is combined with the element description method to improve its search ability. The artificial bee colony algorithm is known to be effective for high-dimensional and multimodal problems. The performance of the proposed method is validated using a heat sealing system in packaging machinery. The proposed method is evaluated in comparison with the genetic algorithm, which is a conventional method. Experiments confirm that the local solution avoidance performance of the artificial bee colony algorithm is significantly better than that of the genetic algorithm.

Recent research in the field of robotics has primarily focused on motion generation methods using imitation learning to adapt to various environments. Human-level speed motion can be imitated by combining imitation learning with bilateral control. In this approach, prediction errors accumulate in the leader because this method requires a leader state that does not exist during autonomous operation. This issue is caused by the low-frequency prediction error of the leader's responses during autonomous operation. Therefore, this paper describes a training model for predicting a leader's state by eliminating low-frequency prediction errors during autonomous operations. The proposed training model predicts the high-frequency state of the leader-follower differential. Because the low-frequency of the leader is not included in the information input and output of the proposed training model, the low frequency prediction error of the leader does not occur during autonomous operation. During our analysis, while writing letters on a paper on a slope, the previous training model failed to write letters when the paper position moved away from the robot. By contrast, only the proposed training model achieved writing at all positions in the experiment.

There is an increase in the popularity of small spacecraft because they are expected to introduce large opportunities in the space industry. However, there are two issues with increased use of small spacecraft: enhancement of cost-effectiveness and improvement in the mission failure rate. This study defines the battery state as the most important parameter in spacecraft operations because it directly relates to the health status of the spacecraft. We propose solving problems by introducing high-accuracy in situ state estimations for real-time operation mode selection and on-ground future state estimations of the battery in spacecraft operations planning by utilizing a suitable numerical model. The high-accuracy in situ state estimations allow us to minimize operational margins for battery protection, improve the efficiency of each spacecraft, and achieve safe spacecraft operations. The combination of a model-based system development approach and numerical optimization methods helps establish an efficient autonomous mission operations planner system to maximize mission duration. This enables us to reduce the human resource costs for spacecraft operations. This study addresses two topics: battery and spacecraft modeling, and establishing a mission operations planner system. The details of the system and battery modeling considering temperature dependence are explained using parameter identification results from the experiments. The design policy of the mission operations planner, which utilizes the battery status as the threshold of the operations and constraints, is explained via numerical optimization details. Numerical and experimental case studies are performed to evaluate the proposed method and show its effectiveness.

Machine learning techniques, including Gaussian processes (GPs), are expected to play a significant role in meeting speed, accuracy, and functionality requirements in future data-intensive mechatronic systems. This paper aims to reveal the potential of GPs for motion control applications. Successful applications of GPs for feedforward and learning control, including the identification and learning for noncausal feedforward, position-dependent snap feedforward, nonlinear feedforward, and GP-based spatial repetitive control, are outlined. Experimental results on various systems, including a desktop printer, wirebonder, and substrate carrier, confirmed that data-based learning using GPs can significantly improve the accuracy of mechatronic systems.

This paper presents the development of a 48V integrated starter generator (ISG) for mild hybrid vehicles. The motor needs to satisfy power and torque performances requirements under the 48V system voltage as well as the passenger vehicle's specific requirements, such as acoustic noise and layout space. Several processes have been explored to obtain a 48V ISG such as the pole number selection process, the electromagnetic design approach for reducing acoustic noise, and a novel position sensor topology. By using the developed technologies, a 48V ISG motor is designed, built, and tested. Furthermore, the developed motor is demonstrated to achieve 180Nm, 15kW exceeding the 95% motor efficiency with acoustic noise reduction design and thin axial motor length.

Nowadays, interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) are widely utilized as traction motors. The permanent magnets used in IPMSMs are an important factor; thus, high-coercivity permanent magnets with lesser rare-earth elements are in development. This study investigated the performance of IPMSMs typically used in automotive applications modified to contain a strong magnet model (SMM). Rotor models with two permanent magnet arrangements, that is, a V-shaped single-layered permanent magnet structure (Type 1V) and a double-layered permanent magnet structure (Type 2D), were considered in this study. This paper discusses the characteristics of the analysis models based on the results of a two-dimensional finite element analysis. The maximum torques of Types 1V and 2D with the SMMs were approximately the same. In addition, the loss of Type 2D with the SMM was lower than that of Type 1V with the SMM at two evaluation points and under two driving schedules. Therefore, Type 2D was proved to be suitable for use with the SMM.

This paper focuses on the voltage modulation method to reduce the switching frequency and proposes a voltage-integral-based reference tracking modulation (VIRTM) method. The proposed method calculates an evaluation function by considering the factors of the switching frequency. Thereafter, the proposed method outputs the voltage vector based on the evaluation function and reduces the switching frequency. The switching frequency of the conventional discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) and that of the proposed VIRTM are evaluated by using simulations and experiments based on feed-forward and feedback control systems. From the results, the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed method are confirmed.

Manufacturing equipment often require high-speed and high-precision positioning with long strokes. This study aims to utilize pneumatic cylinders for such equipment owing to their several advantages. One of the challenges in pressure and position control is valve nonlinearity, such as a varying dead zone. While the conventional feedforward dead zone compensation method cannot address variations in valve input-output characteristics, the twin-drive system, a feedback compensation method, can address the variations using a fast-response flowmeter. However, the disadvantage of the twin-drive system is that it is likely to cause saturation and windup. To solve this problem, we propose an anti-windup method for the twin-drive system. Experimental results indicate the proposed method avoids windup and enables accurate tracking control in the difference mode (i.e., mass-flow input to the tank). Moreover, the experimental results reveal that the proposed twin-drive system with the anti-windup structure improves the pressure tracking performance and enhances the pressure control system's linearity compared with those of the conventional feedforward compensation method.

In this study, parity-time symmetry (PTS) was applied to a wireless power transfer (WPT) system in the low-frequency range of 30-40kHz. A series-parallel topology was analyzed using the coupled mode theory. It was demonstrated that PTS can be preserved over a long transmission distance even at low frequencies by reducing the self-inductance of the receiver coil. The receiver solenoid coil (dimensions: 71 × 30 × 7.4mm, mass: 45.6g, self-inductance: 119µH) was able to maintain a transmission power of 23±1W and an efficiency of 83±1% within a distance of 12-40mm. In addition, the suitable coil orientation range was significantly increased from ±5° to ±65°. The power conversion efficiency of a switching-mode amplifier based on a class-D inverter reached 97% at low frequency. These results are expected to contribute to the expansion of PTS-WPT applications.

Dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors have the characteristics of multi-phase and permanent magnet synchronous motors, whose double- and decoupled-winding models based on the vector space decomposition have been reported. High-frequency signal injection methods enable position sensorless control, parameter identification, and the search for maximum torque per ampere operating points. However, the current control system with high-frequency signal injection for a dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor has not yet been sufficiently discussed. This study compares the double- and decoupled-winding models for the current control system with the high-frequency signal injection and proposes a current control system with high-frequency signal injection. Furthermore, this study proposes a position sensorless control method at low speed based on the high-frequency voltage injection as an application of the proposed current control system with the high-frequency signal injection. Experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed current control system with the high-frequency signal injection and the proposed position sensorless control method.

In this paper, we propose a design method for a novel motor using magnetic resonance coupling (MRC) to enable the practical use of electric aircraft. The proposed motor can transfer electrical energy between a stator and a rotor via MRC, which does not require magnetic cores, thus realizing an ultralightweight design. Moreover, we detail the operating characteristics of the proposed motor and its equivalent circuit, analysis, and experiments. From the analysis, we clarify that the proposed MRC motor has a sufficient strength at an ultrahigh speed, and we describe its essential characteristics and the usefulness of its equivalent circuit. Further, our analytical and experimental results confirm that the proposed MRC motor can transfer electrical energy between a stator and a rotor, thereby generating torque.

This study reveals the characteristics of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) made by blanking (a) 20HX1300 of high grade low-iron-loss silicon steel (0.20mm thickness) and (b) 2605SA1 of amorphous alloy (0.025mm thickness). The blanking of the amorphous alloy is an innovative technology for the mass production of the high efficiency amorphous-alloy-motor. The impact of the processing methods on the magnetic properties are evaluated using the ring cores processed by the following methods: the wire cutting and the blanking. On the other hand, the experiment with the SRMs processed by the blanking evaluates the characteristics depending on the material. As first prototype, 70W-SRM (40mm thickness) is manufactured by blanking 1600 sheets of the amorphous alloy and adhesively laminating them. In the experiment, the motor efficiency of the amorphous-alloy-SRM is improved by 6.9p. t. compared with that of silicon-steel-SRM. In addition, the iron loss of amorphous-alloy-SRM is reduced by 78.7% compared with that of silicon-steel-SRM.

In this study, an effective combination of methods to estimate the magnet operating points in a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is proposed. First, the magnet temperature estimation is compensated with the initial temperature and magnet loss based on the error between the estimated temperature obtained using the thermal equivalent circuit and the estimated temperature obtained using the flux observer. In addition, stator loss is compensated based on the error between the measured temperature and estimated temperature obtained using the thermal equivalent circuit. Then, the flux linkage observer is compensated with the d/q inductance value using the magnetic equivalent circuit. A method of estimating the magnetic flux density of a permanent magnet is designed to estimate the magnetic flux density of the motor using a magnetic equivalent circuit reflecting the value of the measured magnet temperature and magnetic flux density in the permanent magnet's B-H curve. Unlike the rotor temperature, the stator temperature can be easily measured, and the magnet operating point estimation can be designed as a more accurate and error-resistant estimation method. Furthermore, simulation and experimental verification demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Several types of electrified vehicles have been developed and launched as a solution for low carbon transportation. Toyota launched the first massproduced hybrid electric vehicle, the Prius, in 1997. With the evolution of electric components in Toyota Hybrid System, 15 million Toyota hybrid electric vehicles have been sold, and reducing 120 million tons of CO2 in the real world. These electric components have some compatibility with electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles.

This study presents a design method for the continuous switching test circuits of power devices. Depending on the relationship between the rated voltage of a DC voltage source and device under test (DUT), two types of test circuits are proposed. These test circuits comprise a cascaded buck-boost (or boost-buck) converter to achieve power regeneration. Based on analysis of the test circuits, a design method is proposed to ensure that any failure does not spread to the test circuit even when the DUT fails during the continuous switching tests. A test circuit is designed according to the proposed method, and its experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed design.

The switching frequency of power converters is continuing to increase with the demand for their increased power density. Therefore, the frequency band of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by power converters ranges from several kilohertz to 100MHz or more, thereby increasing the importance of EMI countermeasures in power converters. In addition, with the practical applications of smart grids and microgrids and the introduction of 5G technology, cases wherein power converters and information communication devices are placed in close proximity are continuing to increase. Thus, in societies wherein power converters and information communication devices are highly integrated, it is necessary to ensure electromagnetic compatibility based on a different concept. This paper presents a review on modeling and suppression techniques for the EMI generated by power converters and discusses future prospects in this field.
