This study investigated the effects of dietary high-dose biotin intake on fat oxidation in rats using respiratory gas analysis, and evaluated fatty-acid oxidation-related enzyme activities and gene expressions in the liver. Five-week-old male Sprague–Dawley rats were fed a control diet and three biotin-supplemented diets (additive biotin concentration: 0.05%, 0.10%, and 0.20% of diet) for 3 wk. In 2 wk, fat oxidation in the 0.20% biotin-supplemented diet group was higher than that in the 0.05% biotin-supplemented diet group; however, the energy expenditure and carbohydrate oxidation were unchanged between the dietary groups. At the end of 3 wk, body weight and epididymal white adipose tissue weight reduced in the 0.20% biotin diet group, and hepatic triglyceride levels tended to decrease. Additionally, increased plasma adiponectin concentration and hepatic mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase activity as well as decreased hepatic acetyl-CoA carboxylase 2 gene expression were observed in the 0.20% biotin-supplemented diet group compared with those in the control group. These results provide strong evidence that dietary high-dose biotin intake activated fat oxidation due to the increase in hepatic β-oxidation, which may contribute to the decrease in hepatic triglyceride concentration and white adipose tissue weight.

Blackcurrants (Ribes nigrum L.) have various benefits for human health. In particular, a polysaccharide derived from blackcurrant was found to be an immunostimulating food ingredient in a mouse model. We named a polysaccharide derived from blackcurrant cassis polysaccharide (CAPS). In a previous clinical study, we reported that CAPS affects skin dehydration, demonstrating its effectiveness against skin inflammation was related to atopic dermatitis; skin inflammation caused skin dehydration. However, there are no studies regarding CAPS effectiveness against skin dehydration. The current study aimed to investigate CAPS effectiveness against skin dehydration. We further demonstrate the effect of oral administration of CAPS on skin dehydration caused by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation-induced inflammation in mice. We found that CAPS administration suppresses skin dehydration caused by UV irradiation. We also found that CAPS decreases interleukin-6 and matrix metalloproteinase transcription levels in the mouse skin. These results show that CAPS improves skin hydration in UV-irradiated mice.

We have previously reported that patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) have a high prevalence of vitamin K deficiency both in the liver and bone. Thus, vitamin K therapy for SMID patients should be considered. In the present study, we have studied the efficacy of nutritional therapy with vitamin K1 for improving their vitamin K status and bone metabolism markers in patients with SMID. During the 3-mo period, 19 patients under enteral feeding received vitamin K1 treatment, the dose of which was determined to meet each subject’s energy requirement. Biomarkers of vitamin K insufficiency; protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II), undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC), intact osteocalcin (intact OC) and bone turnover markers (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b: TRACP-5b and bone alkaline phosphatase: BAP) were measured at baseline and post treatment. The ucOC/OC ratio was calculated as a more sensitive index than ucOC for vitamin K status in the bone. After treatment, the median vitamin K intake increased from 66 to 183 μg/d, and serum levels of PIVKA-II and ucOC/OC ratio were significantly decreased. Decrements of serum ucOC level and ucOC/OC ratio were significantly associated with vitamin K intake, indicating that both markers well reflect the dose-dependent vitamin K effects. Serum levels of BAP and TRACP-5b were significantly increased after vitamin K1 therapy. Nutritional therapy with vitamin K1 effectively improved the markers for vitamin K status and bone turnover, and was considered to be a good candidate for treatment in SMID patients.

Although the importance of solar radiation for vitamin D3 synthesis in the human body is well known, the solar exposure time required to prevent vitamin D deficiency has not been determined in Japan. This study attempted to identify the time of solar exposure required for vitamin D3 synthesis in the body by season, time of day, and geographic location (Sapporo, Tsukuba, and Naha) using both numerical simulations and observations. According to the numerical simulation for Tsukuba at noon in July under a cloudless sky, 3.5 min of solar exposure are required to produce 5.5 μg vitamin D3 per 600 cm2 skin corresponding to the area of a face and the back of a pair of hands without ingestion from foods. In contrast, it took 76.4 min to produce the same quantity of vitamin D3 at Sapporo in December, at noon under a cloudless sky. The necessary exposure time varied considerably with the time of the day. For Tsukuba at noon in December, 22.4 min were required, but 106.0 min were required at 09:00 and 271.3 min were required at 15:00 for the same meteorological conditions. Naha receives high levels of ultraviolet radiation allowing vitamin D3 synthesis almost throughout the year.

This study aimed to verify the relationship between assignment of professional registered dietitians (RDs) and other healthcare professionals and body weight or functional outcome in underweight patients. This was a secondary analysis of the nation-wide survey data from Kaifukuki (convalescent) rehabilitation wards (KRWs). Data of patients aged ≥20 y with disabilities and body mass index (BMI) <18.5 kg/m2 and who were discharged from 1,099 KRWs were analyzed. The primary outcome was BMI at discharge. Secondary outcomes were Functional Independence Measure (FIM) at discharge and returning to home. Patients were divided into two groups: those in KRWs with ≥1 or <1 dedicated RD per ward (KRW/RD+ and KRW/RD−, respectively). Of 5,843 eligible participants (female, 63%; median age, 82 y; hip/vertebral/knee fracture, 47%; stroke, 34%; disuse syndrome secondary to acute illness, 11%; others, 8%), 1,288 and 4,555 were from the KRW/RD+ and KRW/RD− groups, respectively. At discharge, KRW/RD+ patients had higher FIM (93 vs. 90) and BMI (17.1 vs. 17.0 kg/m2) than did KRW/RD− patients. Multivariable analysis showed that assignment of dedicated RDs (B=0.213, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.036-0.389), number of nurses (B=0.023, 95% CI, 0.003-0.043), and daily rehabilitation dose were significantly associated with changes in body weight. Furthermore, these factors positively affected BMI at discharge. Number of nurses and rehabilitation dose correlated with FIM, but assignment of RDs did not correlate with FIM. In conclusion, assignment of RDs, nurses, and sufficient rehabilitation dose may contribute to BMI gain. Nurses and daily rehabilitation dose may positively affect functional recovery.

Lycopene/tomato has been discussed as a potential effecter in the prevention and therapy of prostate cancer; however, no systematic review has been reported to illustrate its effect recently. In the present study, a meta-analysis was carried out to determine whether intake of lycopene and tomato/tomato products could reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Eleven cohort studies and six nested case-control studies were identified through searching of international journal databases and reference lists of relevant publications. Two reviewers independently assessed the study quality and extracted data from each identified study; only studies with sufficient quality were included in the review. The main outcome of interest was incidence of prostate cancer. Compared with consumers of lower raw tomato intake, the odds ratio (OR) of incidence of prostate cancer among consumers of higher raw tomato intake was 0.81 [95% confidential interval (CI) 0.59-1.10]; for consumers of higher level of cooked tomato intake versus lower cooked tomato intake, this OR was 0.85 (95% CI 0.69-1.06); the OR of higher lycopene intake versus lower lycopene intake for prostate cancer was 0.93 (95% CI 0.86-1.01) and the OR for higher level of serum lycopene versus lower serum lycopene level was 0.97 (95% CI 0.88-1.08). It's suggested that tomato may play a modest role in the prevention of prostate cancer. Further research would be needed to determine the type and quantity of tomato products regarding their potential in preventing prostate cancer.

We reported previously that a single ingestion of an alcohol extract of grains of paradise (GP, Aframomum melegueta), a species of the ginger family, increases energy expenditure (EE) through the activation of brown adipose tissue, a site of sympathetically mediated metabolic theromogenesis. The present study aimed to examine a daily ingestion of GP extract on whole-body EE and body fat in humans. Whole-body EE and body fat content were measured before and after daily oral ingestion of GP extract (30 mg/d) for 4 wk in 19 non-obese female volunteers aged 20-22 y in a single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover design. Four-week daily ingestion of GP and a placebo decreased and increased slightly the visceral fat area at the umbilicus level, respectively. The GP-induced change was significantly different from that induced by the placebo (p<0.05), and negatively correlated with the initial visceral fat area (r=−0.64, p<0.01). Neither GP nor placebo ingestion affected subcutaneous or total fat. The daily ingestion of GP, but not the placebo, increased whole-body EE (p<0.05). These results suggest that GP extract may be an effective and safe tool for reducing body fat, mainly by preventing visceral fat accumulation.

Inositol hexaphosphate (IP6) and its parent compound myo-inositol (Ins) are active compounds from rice and other grains, with a broad spectrum of biological activities important in health and diseases. However, the most striking is the anticancer effect of IP6 and Ins that has been actively investigated during the last decades. A consistent and reproducible anticancer action of IP6 has been demonstrated in various experimental models. IP6 reduces cell proliferation, induces apoptosis and differentiation of malignant cells via PI3K, MAPK, PKC, AP-1 and NF-kappaB. Very few clinical studies in humans and case reports have indicated that IP6 is able to enhance the anticancer effect of conventional chemotherapy, control cancer metastases, and improve quality of life. Reduced burden of chemotherapy side-effects in patients receiving IP6 alone or in combination with Ins has been reported. Because of the highly promising preclinical and emerging clinical data, large clinical trials and further mechanistic studies are warranted.

We previously reported that black tea consumption for 12 wk reduced the risk of acute upper respiratory tract inflammation, and improved secretory capacity in individuals with low salivary SIgA levels (Tanaka Y et al. 2021. Jpn Pharmacol Ther 49: 273–288). These results suggested that habitual black tea consumption improves mucosal immunity. Therefore, in this study we evaluated the effect of black tea intake on gut microbiota, which is known to be involved in mucosal immunity, by analyzing the bacterial flora and the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) concentration of feces collected during the above clinical study. The clinical design was a randomized, single-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study with 72 healthy Japanese adult males and females, who consumed three cups of black tea (Black Tea Polymerized Polyphenols 76.2 mg per day) or placebo per day for 12 wk. In all subjects intake of black tea significantly increased abundance of Prevotella and decreased fecal acetic acid concentration. Particularly in the subjects with low salivary SIgA levels, the change over time of total bacteria, Prevotella, and butyrate-producing bacteria, which are involved in normalizing immune function, were higher in the black tea group than in the placebo group. In subjects with low abundance of Flavonifractor plautii a butyrate-producing bacteria, black tea consumption significantly increased salivary SIgA concentration and the absolute number of Flavonifractor plautii. In conclusion, our results suggest that improvement of mucosal immunity via an increase in butyrate-producing bacteria in the gut may partly contribute to the suppressive effect of black tea consumption on acute upper respiratory tract inflammation observed in our previous report.

The anti-tumor activity of a new type of peptidoglycan isolated from squid ink was shown to have a cure rate of 64% for Meth A tumor from BALB/c mice. The ink delipidated in acetone, which con-tained the peptidoglycan at 0.1% (w/w), was administered to tumor-transplanted mice so as to examine the anti-tumor activity. One-fifth of the tumor-bearing mice was cured with 3 injections (1 mg/head) of the acetone delipidated squid ink or a prolongation of survival was observed in the treated animals. Heat treatment at 100°C for 10 min did not affect the anti-tumor activity of the delipidated ink, its potentiality being pre-served. The acetone-extractable fraction of the ink also brought about a similar cure rate for Meth A tumor. The delipidated ink enhanced the phagocytic activity of macrophages but no direct cytotoxicity was observed for the Meth A tumor cells. Hence it may be said that the anti-tumor activity of the delipidated ink was mainly due to the aug-mented cellular immunity in vivo.

Nutritional complications frequently occur among patients undergoing rehabilitation, and the importance of nutrition in these patients has been emphasized. However, there is not enough evidence available on rehabilitation nutrition. The Japan Rehabilitation Nutrition Database was set up to reflect the real-world clinical practice of rehabilitation nutrition. This paper describes the construction and quality evaluation of the registry database. We constructed a large-scale database that can be used for the clinical research of nutrition for rehabilitation. To verify the data, a simple comparison of the numbers of cases, data loss, data duplication, data type errors, out of range values, and input errors in the option columns was performed. From March 2016 to June 2017, 797 cases were registered in the rehabilitation database from 18 facilities. The variable entry error frequency ranges from 0% to 0.4% and the frequency of a main item missing from 0.4% to 10.9%. Energy intake on hospitalization was missing in 10.9% of cases, and Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form and Food Intake LEVEL Scale on hospitalization was missing in 9.7% of cases. Stroke accounted for 45.7% of the diseases registered, pneumonia for 36.5%, and proximal femoral fracture for 17.8%. Through the use of this database, research on rehabilitation nutrition can be conducted, and there is a possibility that useful results for future clinical practice may be obtained. Verification of the secondary use of the database is becoming the basis for evidence-based nutritional rehabilitation.

With the western influence in our diets, food consumption has changed, and our magnesium (Mg) intake is no longer optimal. Serum Mg (S-Mg) level is currently used as an indicator of Mg deficiency and is strictly regulated via compensatory mechanisms. It is believed that a 24-h urine collection can be used to evaluate potential Mg deficiency. This study aimed to assess whether Mg deficiency state as found in urine Mg (U-Mg) excretion and improving such deficiency with a diet that meets the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) of Mg for 15 d. Healthy Japanese women were recruited for Study 1 (n=22) and Study 2 (n=10). Study 1 was 1-d balance test, where fasting blood and 24-h urine samples were collected. Study 2 was 15-d diet load test, where fasting blood (days 1, 7, and 15) and 24-h urine (odd days) were collected. All test meals were made certain to have met the RDA for Mg for women in their 20s. In Studies 1 and 2, S-Mg was within the normal range. In Study 1, U-Mg excretion was 67.7±17.0 mg/d, with a large dispersion. In Study 2, U-Mg excretion on days 7 and 15 was significantly higher than on day 1, but have no significant differences in U-Mg excretion between days 7–15. U-Mg excretion can be a valuable indicator to evaluate Mg state. In young women, improvements in Mg deficient state were observed after 7–15 d of taking meals that met the RDAs of Mg.

This research aimed to investigate factors associated with vitamin D deficiency and to provide data about its prevalence in patients suffering from different psychiatric illnesses. The study had a cross-sectional design and it included 220 patients of both genders, aged from 19-81 y, with a wide range of mental disorders (F00-F89), and treated in routine ambulatory and hospital practice. The researchers collected data from three sources: medical records, a study questionnaire and biochemical analysis of patients’ serum samples (concentration of vitamin D measured as 25(OH)D, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, methods for hypothesis testing and binary logistic regression, at the p≤0.05 level. A total of 140 patients (64%) had a deficiency of vitamin D (<12 ng/mL), and 45 (20%) had inadequate vitamin D serum levels (12-20 ng/mL), while 35 (16%) had sufficient vitamin D serum concentrations (>20 ng/mL). Among variables related to demographics, life style habits, mental illness, comorbid disorders and drugs, two of them, female gender (odds ratio (OR)=2.5, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.3-4.9, p=0.006) and using clozapine (OR=15.6, 95% CI 1.7-144.7, p=0.02), were significantly associated with vitamin D deficiency. Physical activity (OR= 0.4, 95% CI 0.2-0.9, p=0.02), exercising (OR=0.2, 95% CI <0.1-0.7, p=0.02) and offal in the diet (OR=0.5, 95% CI 0.3-0.9, p=0.03) significantly aggregated in the patients who had a 25(OH)D serum concentration above the deficiency cut-off level. Patients with mental disorders are at high risk for vitamin D deficiency, particularly females and clozapine users as well as those having no adequate physical activity or dietary habits.

The purpose was to investigate the association between proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy and nutritional status in elderly hospitalized patients. Participants were 190 elderly patients admitted to the long-term care wards, convalescence rehabilitation wards, and community integrated care wards in January 2015. Nutritional status was assessed using the mini nutritional assessment short-form (MNA-SF). The PPI use group was compared with the PPI non-use group regarding nutrition status. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine whether the period of PPI therapy was associated independently with malnutrition following adjustment for covariates including gender, age, and serum albumin level. Forty-one patients were male (22%) and 149 patients were female (78%), with a mean age of 85.4±8.4. Fifty-three patients (28%) took PPIs (with a median prescription period of 91 d, ranging from 51 to 227). With a MNA-SF score of 7 points or lower designated as malnutrition, there was no significant difference in nutritional status between the PPI and non-PPI groups (p=0.172). The median MNA-SF scores in the PPI and non-PPI groups were 9 vs 7 points, respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that long-term PPI therapy (odds ratio, 0.994; 95% confidence interval 0.990-0.999) was significantly associated with improved nutritional status. The presence or absence of PPI therapy is not associated with malnutrition in elderly hospitalized patients. Longer-term PPI therapy may improve nutritional status.

The role of vitamin A in the pathophysiological context of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) represents a current challenge, given the major impact of COVID-19 on morbidity and mortality and the importance of retinol in pulmonary and immunomodulatory functions. The aim of this review is to assess the relationship between vitamin A nutritional status and clinical outcomes in people with COVID-19. The PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and ScienceDirect databases were used to search for observational studies that assessed retinol levels in hospitalized individuals with COVID-19, following the PRISMA recommendations. A total of 1,912 articles were identified and seven met the inclusion criteria. Four studies showed borderline or deficient retinol blood levels (retinol <0.20 mg/L or <0.70 mol/L) in people with COVID-19, associated with worsened clinical outcomes. In the other three studies lower mean values of this vitamin were identified in COVID-19 symptomatic groups compared to asymptomatic or convalescent groups that showed worse clinical outcomes. The results suggest a possible association between retinol and COVID-19 outcomes. However, there is a clear need to develop clinical trials to elucidate the role of vitamin A in the pathophysiological process of COVID-19.

The balance of minerals (sodium [Na], potassium [K], calcium [Ca], and magnesium [Mg]) was measured in six female students for 10 d while under a relatively low Na intake (100mmol/d or 2.2g/d) with receiving adequate Ca (20mmol/d or 800mg/d) and Mg (12mmol/d or 280mg/d), Both the plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone level were above the reference ranges throughout the experiment, which implied that the subjects were Na deficient. However, the urine Na excretion was about the same as that ingested, while there was no substantial reduction of sweat Na concentration observed during moderate physical exercise (13.2±2.6mmol/L) (mean±SD), On the other hand, the urine Ca and Mg levels were high, but the apparent absorption of Ca and Mg was moderate (21±5%, 34±4%, respectively), which resulted in a negative balance of these two elements. It seems that the stored Na in the bone is eluted so as to compensate for the low dietary Na intake, while any excess Ca and Mg also inevitably flows into the blood stream with Na, which inhibited the intestinal absorption of both Ca and Mg and accelerates their excretion in urine.

Pyridine nucleotide coenzymes (PNCs) are involved in over 500 enzyme reactions. PNCs are biosynthesized from the amino acid L-tryptophan (L-Trp), as well as the vitamin niacin. Hence, “true” niacin-deficient animals cannot be “created” using nutritional techniques. We wanted to establish a truly niacin-deficient model animal using a protocol that did not involve manipulating dietary L-Trp. We generated mice that are missing the quinolinic acid phosphoribosyltransferase (QPRT) gene. QPRT activity was not detected in qprt−/−mice. The qprt+/+, qprt+/− or qprt−/− mice (8 wk old) were fed a complete diet containing 30 mg nicotinic acid (NiA) and 2.3 g L-Trp/kg diet or an NiA-free diet containing 2.3 g L-Trp/kg diet for 23 d. When qprt−/−mice were fed a complete diet, food intake and body weight gain did not differ from those of the qprt+/+ and the qprt+/− mice. On the other hand, in the qprt−/− mice fed the NiA-free diet, food intake and body weight were reduced to 60% (p<0.01) and 70% (p<0.05) of the corresponding values for the qprt−/− mice fed the complete diet at day 23, respectively. The nutritional levels of niacin such as blood and liver NAD concentrations were also lower in the qprt−/− mice than in the qprt+/+ and the qprt+/− mice. Urinary excretion of quinolinic acid was greater in the qprt−/− mice than in the qprt+/+ and the qprt+/− mice (p<0.01). These data suggest that we generated truly niacin-deficient mice.

Vitamin D is known to be effective for the prevention of muscle atrophy, such as age-related sarcopenia. However, vitamin D action in skeletal muscle tissue and muscle cells is largely unknown. We previously found that a transcription factor, FOXO1 gene expression, was induced in various muscle atrophy conditions causing muscle atrophy by upregulating atrophy-related genes, including atrogin 1 (ubiquitin ligase) and cathepsin L (lysosomal proteinase). In this study, we found that vitamin D inhibited FOXO1-mediated transcriptional activity in a reporter gene assay. Moreover, vitamin D suppressed the glucocorticoid-induced gene expression of atrogin 1 and cathepsin L in C2C12 myoblasts. Thus, vitamin D may prevent muscle atrophy via the FOXO1-mediated pathway in muscle cells.

The toxic catabolic intermediates of branched chain amino acids can cause insulin resistance, and are involved in different mechanisms in different metabolic tissues. In skeletal muscle, 3-hydroxy-isobutyrate produced by valine promotes skeletal muscle fatty acid uptake, resulting in the accumulation of incompletely oxidized lipids in skeletal muscle, causing skeletal muscle insulin resistance. In the liver, branched-chain α-keto acids decompose in large amounts, promote hepatic gluconeogenesis, and lead to the accumulation of multiple acylcarnitines, which damages the mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid cycle, resulting in the accumulation of incomplete oxidation products, oxidative stress in mitochondria, and hepatic insulin resistance. In adipose tissue, the expression of branched-chain amino acid catabolic enzymes (branched-chain amino acid transaminase, branched-chain α-keto acid dehydrogenase) is reduced, resulting in an increased level of plasma branched-chain amino acids, thereby causing massive decomposition of branched-chain amino acids in tissues such as skeletal muscle and liver, and inducing insulin resistance. However, branched-chain amino acids, as a common nutritional supplement for athletes, do not induce insulin resistance. A possible explanation for this phenomenon is that exercise can enhance the mitochondrial oxidative potential of branched-chain amino acids, alleviate or even eliminate the accumulation of branched-chain amino acid catabolic intermediates, and promotes branched-chain amino acids catabolism into beta-aminoisobutyric acid, increasing plasma beta-aminoisobutyric acid concentration, improving insulin resistance. This article reveals the mechanism of BCAA-induced insulin resistance and the relationship between exercise and BCAAs metabolism, adds a guarantee for the use of BCAAs, and provides a new explanation for the occurrence of diabetes and how exercise improves diabetes.

Observational and interventional studies have showed associations between dietary patterns and the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The aim of the present study was to identify dietary patterns and examine their association with incident of T2DM and physiopathologic mechanism in the Uygur population of Xinjiang, China. A community-based case control study in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. We enrolled 836 Uygur adults (345 newly diagnosed T2DM and 491 healthy controls) receiving physical examination in community health service centers. Dietary patterns were evaluated using a validated 121 items semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ). Dietary patterns were identified by exploratory factor analysis. Data on demographic, anthropometric, socioeconomic characteristics were collected. Homeostasis model assessment index for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and for β cell function (HOMA-β) were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression were used to estimate the associations between dietary patterns and the risk of T2DM and multiple linear regression were used to evaluate the association between dietary patterns and fasting plasm glucose (FPG), fasting insulin (FINS), HOMA-IR and HOMA-β, adjusting for confounding factors. Five major dietary patterns were identified: (1) the “vegetable and tubes” pattern; (2) the “fruit and nut” pattern; (3) the “refined grains and meat” pattern; (4) the “dairy, legume and egg” pattern; and (5) the “oil and salt” pattern. Logistic regression results demonstrated that the “vegetable and tubes” dietary pattern and the “fruit and nut” dietary pattern were related to T2DM, OR values were 0.223 (95% CI: 0.135-0.371), 0.160 (95% CI: 0.093-0.275), respectively. The “refined grains and meat” dietary pattern and the “oil and salt” dietary pattern were related to T2DM, OR values were 6.146 (95% CI: 3.217-11.739), 9.554 (95% CI: 5.668-16.104), respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the above five dietary patterns were related to log (FPG), β values were −0.040, −0.039, 0.028, −0.010 and 0.036, respectively, all p<0.05. The “vegetable and tubes” pattern, the “fruit and nut” pattern, the “refined grains and meat” pattern and the “oil and salt” pattern were related to log (HOMA-IR), β values were −0.061, −0.060, 0.045, and 0.042, and were related to log (HOMA-β), β values were 0.071, 0.063, −0.035 and −0.070, respectively, all p<0.05. The “refined grains and meat” dietary pattern and the “oil and salt” dietary pattern may be the important reason for the rapid increase of T2DM incidence among Chinese Uygur residents. Our findings suggest that modifying dietary patterns could reduce T2DM incidence in the adult Uygur population.
