The bills of the spoonbills differ from the bills of most birds by being wider near the downward curved tip than in the middle, and having the mandibles dorso-ventrally extremely flattened. The mandibles have rounded lateral borders and lack cutting edges. The inward directed sides have a dense cover of thin parallel ridges on the distal parts and rows of teeth-like tubercles in the proximate parts. Their skeletons have numerous small pits in the distal parts especially along the edges and the insides. These pits are similar to the spaces for sensory corpuscles for touch in the bills of Scolopacidae (sandpipers, snipes) and are presumed to have the same function in spoonbills. The bill seems adapted for tactile feeding with lateral movements (sweeping) and for pecking, but not for probing into sediments. The wide gape with gular pouch allows the swallowing of rather large food items. The muscular layer of the gizzard is weakly developed and the gizzard is more a digestive pocket than a chewing organ such as occurs for grinding hard shells and grains in molluscivorous and granivorous birds. The long legs are laterally flattened, perhaps for minimising resistance and not-disturbing prey when walking in water during feeding; the partly webbed feet with long toes allow walking over soft mud bottoms.

Consumption of the berries of Morrow's Honeysuckle Lonicera morrowii has caused reddening of bird plumages in North America. We looked for examples of reddened feathers in Japanese birds, where the honeysuckle is native. We report the observation of legitimate reddened feathers in three Gray-headed Woodpeckers Picus canus, but are unsure whether the honeysuckle caused the color change in this instance. Morrow's Honeysuckle is uncommon in Japan, and birds rarely eat its berries. The availability of a wide variety of edible fruits may generally reduce the likelihood of avian plumage coloration being altered by shrubs such as the honeysuckle in Japan.

To identify drivers of local variation in breeding success in colonial seabirds, we studied the role of breeding phenology and parental quality on the breeding performance of two neighbouring subcolonies of Streaked Shearwaters Calonectris leucomelas, with similar habitat but different success. Egg dimension and parental quality during incubation, but not phenology, predicted hatching success. Birds at the low-success colony laid smaller eggs, reared smaller chicks and neglected eggs more frequently, leaving them vulnerable to predation. Our findings suggest that local variation in breeding performance in this species arises from differences in breeding quality, perhaps driven by age or experience.

In many songbirds, males vary aspects of their singing behaviour when engaged in territorial interactions. Song rate, song type switching rate, song matching, song overlapping, and the use of specific song or call types have all been proposed to be aggressive signals. It is not clear why such variability in aggressive signaling mechanisms exists among different species. We used a comparative approach to study how two Phylloscopus warbler species respond to playback-simulated territorial intrusion. We examined whether the spontaneous songs of Large-billed Phylloscopus magnirostris and Sulphur-breasted P. ricketii leaf-warblers differed from songs produced in response to playback. Song bouts were analysed by measuring 10–12 parameters, but we found no differences between spontaneous songs and playback responses in either species. All males clearly responded to playback by approaching the loudspeaker and flying around it. Large-billed Leaf-warblers produced ‘crackling' sounds in response to playback more frequently than during spontaneous singing, whereas the usually highly vocal Sulphur-breasted Leaf-warblers possibly (and surprisingly) did not use vocalizations (either songs or calls) to signal direct aggression. A comparison with other Phylloscopus species revealed that even closely related species (i.e. from a single genus) might use different strategies when responding to simulated territorial intrusion. The aggressive signalling strategy is therefore a labile trait that can potentially be exposed to fast evolutionary change.

The genetic structure of Streaked Shearwater Calonectris leucomelas, a seabird breeding on islands around Japan, was investigated using nuclear microsatellite markers at four breeding colonies located in three geographically distinct areas (Pacific Ocean, Sea of Japan, and Seto Inland Sea). To investigate independently natal and breeding dispersal patterns, we analyzed records of recoveries of birds banded around Japan over a 30-year period from 1971 to 2020. The genetic marker analysis showed little differentiation among the breeding sites and a lack of population structure. In contrast, banding data presented few examples of natal and breeding dispersal and a much greater number of natal/breeding philopatry cases. Although further research is needed to understand the discrepancy between the genetic properties and recapture patterns of banded birds, some possible reasons are suggested: actual dispersal events may not have been fully detected by the banding research, thus, underestimating dispersal frequency; rare dispersal events may have functioned to reduce the genetic structure; and/or breeding colonies of this species might have been established recently, thus genetic markers may not be indicative of current dispersal patterns. In conclusion, our results indicate ongoing gene flow and/or strong historical association in this species.

In Malaysia, multiple land use by humans has caused substantial losses of wetland ecosystems, and shrinkage of the populations, habitat and food bases of avian species. However, studies of avian populations, especially of waterbirds, is important, allowing us to understand the complexity of the wetland ecosystem structure, and also develop appropriate management techniques with robust monitoring tools to ensure the ecological sustainability of wetlands. This study aimed to determine the eco-climatic factors influencing the occurrence of waterbirds and to develop habitat suitability models for thePaya Indah (PIW) and Putrajaya wetlands (PW), Malaysia. A distance sampling point count technique using stratified random design was employed to survey the wetlands from November 2016 to January 2019. A total of 57 sampling points at 14 lakes at PIW and 54 sampling points at 24 lakes at PW were chosen. An automatic linear modelling algorithm and geographic information systems were employed to compute the importance ratios of 17 eco-climatic factors (hydrology 9; climate 5; waterscape 1 and landscape 2). The results revealed that all individual and estimated indices for observed waterbirds were significant. The automatic linear modelling algorithm results for PIW waterbirds also showed that the maximum and minimum weights of the factors were land cover and water dissolved oxygen, while in PW they were atmospheric pressure and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). The maximum and minimum weights of the factors for waterbirds in PIW were water turbidity and electrical conductivity, while at PW they were atmospheric pressure and six water parameters. Large areas of Putrajaya Wetland were classified as more suitable for waterbirds than Paya Indah Wetland due to the favourable water pH, atmospheric pressure and land cover (forage availability). Thus, the models' adoption as a management tool can help in the maintenance of the wetlands' habitat quality and management effectiveness of waterbird species.

Populations of birds inhabiting wetlands and grasslands are decreasing globally due to farmland expansion and subsequent agricultural intensification. In addition to conserving natural habitats, managing cultivated farmland and abandoned farmland are likely to be important future conservation measures; however, their relative suitability as avian habitat remains understudied. In this study, we evaluated five habitat types (wetland, pasture, cropland, abandoned farmland, and solar power plant) for openland birds in an agricultural landscape in central Hokkaido, northern Japan. Abandoned farmlands had bird species richness and total bird abundance values similar to those of wetlands. These values were generally higher in abandoned farmlands and wetlands than in croplands, pastures, and solar power plants. The per pair reproductive success of Stejneger's Stonechat Saxicola stejnegeri and the amount of its prey (arthropods) did not differ among the five habitat types. Three species (Black-browed Reed Warbler Acrocephalus bistrigiceps, Common Reed Bunting Emberiza schoeniclus, and Japanese Bush Warbler Cettia diphone) arrived earlier in wetlands than in other habitat types. These results suggest that, although protecting the remaining wetlands is of prime importance for the conservation of openland birds in agricultural landscapes, valuing and managing abandoned farmlands would be a promising alternative.

Jungle Crows (Corvus macrorhynchos) and Carrion Crows (C. corone) are common species in Japan. They are closely related and considered ecological “generalists”. I carried out a comparative study on territory and habitat use of these crows in an area where they occur syntopically. The two species defended their territories both intra- and interspecifically. The feeding behavior on the ground and the microhabitats in the territories differed between the species. Jungle Crow territories contained more urban areas, and they foraged mainly at garbage stations. In contrast, Carrion Crows mainly foraged in natural or at least un-paved microhabitats and stayed longer on the ground. Differences in microhabitat use and feeding behavior seemed to contribute to ecological separation between the two species of crows.

Japan hosts more than 40% population of Brent Goose Branta bernicla wintering in East Asia. We used satellite-tracking technology to monitor the seasonal movements and habitat usage of Brent Goose wintering in northern Japan. We marked five geese on the Oya sandy beach, Miyagi Prefecture, northeast Honshu, on 21 January 2014. The geese utilized areas along the seacoast, especially concentrating at a small bay, close to the capture site. Most of the geese offshore were found at fishery rafts. No geese were found more than 2 km offshore or more than 6 km from the capture site along the seacoast. In early April, the geese left the southern Sanriku coast and moved up to eastern Hokkaido, crossing the sea directly or via the coastal areas of Iwate and Aomori Prefectures. The geese predominantly remained in the vicinity of the Veslovskiy Peninsula, Kunashiri (Kunashir) Island, while some were distributed along the northern coast of the Nemuro Peninsula. We identified eastern Hokkaido and Kunashiri Island as important stopover sites for Brent Goose wintering in Japan.

Willow Tits Poecile montanus produce calls when they discover food sources. These calls function to attract conspecific and heterospecific individuals to the food site, thereby facilitating the formation of mixed-species foraging flocks. Since individuals may gain feeding/anti-predator benefits while foraging in mixed-species flocks, the ability of food discoverers to signal food presence would be of adaptive value. Here, I tested this idea by comparing the calls of Willow Tits between food and non-food contexts. Field observations at artificial feeders showed that Willow Tits typically produce calls composed of a single note type (tää note) when discovering food supplies, whereas they usually combine two distinct note types (introductory and tää notes) when moving through forests without a food source. These results indicate that Willow Tits use subtle variation in the note composition of calls to discriminate between food and non-food contexts, and this may serve to regulate the movements and cohesion of mixed-species flocks.

Japanese Night Heron Gorsachius goisagi has recently been down-listed in status from Endangered to Vulnerable by BirdLife International due to the presence of a likely larger population than previously considered. However, there is still relatively little known about the ecology and current population status of this rare, elusive, and solitary species. In this study, we used infrared cameras to study its behaviour. We installed cameras at 120 locations on the forest floor of Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, over approximately one year. Japanese Night Heron was recorded at 15 locations (132 video files of 25 independent events). All records except one were obtained during the daytime, and all involved herons walking on the forest floor where they were searching for potential prey items (most likely earthworms). Both adult and recently fledged juvenile herons were recorded, providing direct evidence that the species breeds on Awaji Island. Additionally, a zero-inflated Poisson GLMM analysis showed that Japanese Night Heron may not prefer evergreen coniferous plantations. Our results not only indicate that the species forages diurnally, contrary to its common name, but also sheds light on the importance of maintaining forests and foraging ground environments for the conservation of this species.

The Ryukyu Robin species complex, including the Ryukyu Robin Larvivora komadori and the Okinawa Robin L. namiyei, is endemic to the islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago. Population genetic structure and gene flow within this complex were investigated using 14 nuclear microsatellite markers. Distinct genetic differentiation was detected between the Ryukyu and Okinawa robins, and the Ryukyu Robin was further differentiated into four regional groups belonging to the Danjo Islands, Tokara Islands, Oh-shima with some adjacent islands, and Tokuno-shima. Contemporary gene flow among these regional groups was restricted overall, but outflow from the Tokara Islands group to the other three groups was exceptionally high. This asymmetric pattern may have been affected by differences in the isolation distance, migratory habits, and population size. The Ryukyu Robin species complex was long considered a single polytypic species; however, it has recently been classified as two independent species, mainly owing to the deep mitochondrial DNA divergence between them and a phenotypical re-examination. The genetic structure inferred from the nuclear loci strongly supports their genetic independence. The Okinawa Robin provides the first case among birds for which the splitting of sister species both endemic to the Ryukyu Archipelago is supported by all of the morphological, behavioral, ecological, and genetic evidence. Such recognition appears preferable in avian conservation and biogeography studies. Currently, the Ryukyu Archipelago includes an Endemic Bird Area and two Natural World Heritage sites, making the reliable delimitation of endemic species all the more important. Comprehensive genetic investigation, together with phenotypical re-examination is necessary, even for closely resembling but allopatric sister forms in this region.

The Asian Koel Eudynamys scolopaceus is an obligate brood parasite commonly known to parasitize open nests of various passerines. However, in the Philippines, no information on the Asian Koel's hosts is available. We present the first record of an Asian Koel parasitizing the cavity nest of a Coleto Sarcops calvus, at the Subic Watershed Forest Reserve, Luzon, Philippines. Our findings provide important insights into the species' brood parasitism in the Philippines and within its range.

In this study we investigated the eye morphology and retinal topography of two owl species in relation to their visual environment. Although Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus is larger and weighs more than Japanese Scops Owl Otus semitorques, its eye dimensions (weight, corneal diameter, and axial length) are all smaller than the scops owl's. Owl retinas were examined in Nissl-stained whole-mount preparations. The total number of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) was greater in the Japanese Scops Owl (4,703.0×103 cells) than in the Short-eared Owl (2,346.8×103 cells). The eye morphology of, and the number of RGCs in the Japanese Scops Owl indicate that it is more adapted to a nocturnal habit. An area of high-density RGCs was horizontally distributed in the temporal retina of the Short-eared Owl, with a peak density of 17.4×103 cells/mm2. In the Japanese Scops Owl's temporal retina, there was an oval-shaped arrangement with a peak density of 23.1×103 cells/mm2. These distributions indicate that whereas Short-eared Owl is adapted to open habitats, Japanese Scops Owl is adapted to enclosed habitats. The RGCs of both species were classified into three categories (small, medium, and large) based on the size and appearance of somas. In both species, medium-sized cells predominated, and the proportion of large-sized cells was smallest. The distribution and high-density areas differed among these groups, suggesting adaptation to the visual environment. The high-density areas of these groups cover the nasal visual fields, which include the overlap for binocular vision.

We identified the diet of owlets of the Daito subspecies of the Ryukyu Scops Owl Otus elegans interpositus on Minami-daito Island during late May and early June 2009, by means of high-resolution color photography. Cockroaches were provided by parents to their young at all eight nests studied, and contributed the largest single component of the diet (33%). Orthoptera species, which inhabited open grassland habitats, constituted >20% of the total occurrences in the diet of owlets. It is suggested that Ryukyu Scops Owls depend heavily on food items obtained from habitats that have been modified by human activity on Minami-daito Island. Diets for owlets differed widely among nests, and the differences were considered to result from individual differences among parents and/or the environments surrounding each nest.

On 13 June 2021, a video was recorded showing an adult female Asian Koel Eudynamys scolopaceus removing three Elliot's Laughingthrush Trochalopteron elliotii nestlings from a nest in a thicket on the banks of Liqiu River in Xinduqiao Town, Kangding, Sichuan, Southwestern China. This is the first record of an Asian Koel removing nestlings from a potential host's nest. Of the various brood parasitism hypotheses, this behavior is most consistent with the farming hypothesis, further suggesting that farming behavior may be a common strategy used by obligate brood parasites.

Our study provides the first GPS tracking data of Little Egret Egretta garzetta from an East Asian population. Our two main objectives were to reveal the migratory route and migratory strategy of Little Egret, and to study inter-annual breeding and wintering site fidelity. Our data, from an adult and a juvenile, suggest that this species is a short-distance high-speed migrant using few or no stopover sites. Both individuals displayed high breeding and wintering site fidelity. They also used very small winter home ranges, probably associated with high prey availability in aquaculture ponds.

We used radio telemetry to provide the first information concerning home range size of Hainan Partridge Arborophila ardens, a vulnerable species endemic to Hainan Island, China, in both a fragmented and a continuous natural rainforest. Both the monthly and daily home range sizes of the population in the fragmented rainforest were significantly larger than those in the continuous rainforest, with no difference between males and females. Fragmentation reduced habitat quality and thus may have forced the partridges to forage over a wider range, which may threaten their survival.

We describe, for the first time, the rattling call of the Crested Honey Buzzard Pernis ptilorhynchus. This was previously considered to be a unique vocalization of European Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus; however, we detected this series of rapidly repeated notes given by an adult female, a second-year, a juvenile and a nestling Crested Honey Buzzard. The rattling calls appeared to be given at times of great excitement, such as to an approaching intruder, mate or parent at the nest, or to a familiar person who usually gave food in the case of captive individuals. The rattling call of an adult female Crested Honey Buzzard at the nest was at a frequency of 2.12 (s.d.±0.07) kHz, and lasted 141 (s.d.±18) ms, which was higher and longer than in European Honey Buzzard.
