This study explores the use of international Academic Social Networks (ASNs), such as Researchgate, by researchers in Japan. Understanding the types of researchers who use ASNs, and the benefits and challenges they derive from them, can help to better understand how they may be effectively used to increase international relationships and collaboration opportunities for researchers in Japan, and thus assist in the internationalization process of Japanese universities.
