An ionic liquid (IL) composed of 9–anthracene carboxylate anion and ammonium cation possessing three diethylene glycol chains shows photo–triggered dimerization of anthracence chromophores. It causes segregation and crystallization of protonated 9–anthracene carboxylic acid dimer, which is associated with the concurrent liberation of the free amine in the IL. This work provides a new molecular design for photoresponsive ILs, whose first application for site–selective photo–patterning is demonstrated.

We describe the in situ synthesis of the covalent organic framework-5 (COF-5) on the surfaces of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphenes having homogeneous CNT@COF-5 core–shell structures using a sonochemical reaction in one pot. CNT@COF-5 was found to show better CO2 adsorption than the pristine COF-5.

A compact TiO2 interlayer between FTO and perovskite in planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells is essential for effective charge extraction and minimized recombination. The electrical property of the interface of the perovskite layer with the compact TiO2 layer is thus important for achieving high power conversion efficiency in the perovskite solar cells. The motivation for the present study was to improve cell performance by improving the property of the TiO2/perovskite interface. Interestingly, a remarkable enhancement in cell efficiency was achieved by treatment of the compact TiO2 layer with TiCl4 and UV(O3).

A strategy for designing highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters was reported. TADF emitters with donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D)-type structures showed highly efficient TADF because of their small singlet–triplet energy gap and large oscillator strength. An organic light-emitting diode containing a D–A–D-type TADF emitter, cis-BOX2, exhibited a high external electroluminescence quantum efficiency of 17.6%.

We showed that a thermally stable europium complex can be used as a fluorescence probe to characterize glass transition behavior for polymers. This kind of simple but novel work opens many possibilities of measurements for physical properties of polymers at higher temperatures.

Over the last four decades an experimental method has been developed for looking at electron orbitals in momentum space. The method, called electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS), is based on the electron-impact ionizing reaction near the Bethe ridge at incident electron energies of the order of 1 keV or higher. This account reviews frontiers of the field, involving the first approach to molecular frame EMS that enables one to look at molecular orbitals in three-dimensional form.

Nanostructures of porous carbon materials were controlled with a soft-template method for the purpose of expanding their applications. When 2,6-dihydropyridine hydrochloride, a nitrogen containing compound, was used as a carbon precursor in addition to resorcinol, larger pores over 50 nm appeared besides mesopores. The condition of such large pores being formed was examined in detail, and then acidity was found to a key factor for large pores rather than the presence of nitrogen atoms.

To fabricate transparent conducting films (TCFs) for electronic devices, both a high conductivity and thermal stability are significant issues due to the need for a high temperature annealing process. In this report, we describe the preparation of a highly transparent (94% transmittance), conductive (surface resistivity: 354 Ω sq−1) and thermally stable double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) film without adding any chemical doping or rinsing. Such film was obtained by a simple dilution and condensation/filtration process (DC/F). The procedure is quite simple, and thus large scalability is easy.

A photocatalyst can be used for various applications. Such materials are semiconductors which are stable to photoirradiation, for example, TiO2. Most of these materials require UV light. There are many kinds of semiconductors which are unstable to photoirradiation, but which have a visible light response. In this study, it is shown that a thin Au film or Au nano particles on the surface of the photocatalyst reduced the photodecomposition of the photocatalyst. Although the surfaces of the samples were completely covered by Au, photocatalytic activity was observed in all the Au-coated samples. The Au-coating on the surface enhances the photocatalysis of a coated photocatalyst.

An overview is presented of the many opportunities and challenges for using “Big Data” concepts to treat data from chemical sensors. Issues discussed include the need to make data machine readable and how to integrate distinct types of data that can be acquired and stored in different places. As a concrete example of possible applications, we propose a framework for an expert system dedicated to clinical diagnosis, where data from various types of sensors can be combined with text to provide better-informed diagnostics.

Triethynylphosphines with bulky end caps such as triarylsilyl and triarylmethyl groups at alkyne termini have a novel molecular shape presenting a large, deep metal-binding cavity. The hollow-shaped triethynylphosphines functioned as effective ligands in the rhodium-catalyzed hydrosilylation of ketones with triorganosilanes due to the preferential formation of a mono-P-ligated rhodium species. Furthermore, the phosphines displayed remarkable rate enhancement in the gold(I)-catalyzed alkyne cyclization constructing six- to eight-membered ring compounds. It is proposed that the cavity in the ligand forces a nucleophilic center of the acetylenic compounds close to the gold-bound alkyne, making ring-closing anti attack feasible.

Various metal-bridged single and double helical complexes of π-conjugated ligand molecules, bidipyrrins, were prepared. The introduction of terminal end units enabled the formation of chiral single and double helices; their spectroscopic properties and temperature-dependent behaviors were examined.

We have developed a facile procedure for the synthesis of π-extended fluorubins from perylene bisimides. Iridium-catalyzed direct borylation, the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling, and an acid-condensation sequence afforded π-extended fluorubins 1 in moderate yields. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a planar structure of 1. In addition, optical analysis and DFT calculations indicated the presence of intramolecular charge-transfer interactions in 1c.

The title imides possessing a planar acenaphthofluoranthene moiety were prepared by the Diels–Alder reaction of diacenaphtho[1,2-b:1′,2′-d]thiophene and maleic anhydride and subsequent treatment with amines. The reaction with maleimide afforded the corresponding 1:2 adduct displaying intense blue fluorescence in solution. Although the imides crystallize yellow needles, their amorphous solids are red. Concentration-dependent 1H NMR spectra of a N-octyl derivative reveal self-aggregation behavior in CDCl3.

A Ce3+ complex with tetradentate ligands based on benzimidazole moieties was synthesized. The photochemical properties of the Ce3+ complex were studied via absorption and emission spectra and emission quantum yield measurements. The effective values of the molar absorption coefficient and the emission quantum yield were estimated to be 890 dm3 mol−1 cm−1 and 0.58, respectively; these values are relatively large compared to those of common rare-earth metal complexes that exhibit 4f–4f emissions.

This technology is concerned with a new type of extruded polystyrene foam (XPS), which gives high performance of thermal insulation without containing any fluorocarbons as a blowing agent. Avoiding such typically harmful materials will help solve global environmental problems like ozone layer depletion and global warming. Kaneka Corporation developed this technology for the first time in the world. As a blowing agent of this new XPS in place of fluorocarbons we adopted isobutane, an excellent green gas that helps prevent ozone layer depletion and global warming. However, there is a problem: it is difficult to secure high performance of thermal insulation and flame retardation when isobutane is used. This originates from the fact that isobutane has a higher thermal conductivity than fluorocarbons, and is highly flammable. To overcome the former problem, we found a novel cell structure to secure high performance of thermal insulation, and we developed new technologies to control it. To solve the latter problem, namely securing flame retardation, we clarified the mechanism to suppress combustion of isobutane, and developed a new flame retardation technology by the addition of specific compounds. As a result of a combination of these technologies, we were able to develop and commercialize a new XPS with high performance of thermal insulation. These technologies directly contribute to prevent adverse effects on the global environment such as ozone layer depletion and global warming, by not using fluorocarbons. And, in addition, these technologies indirectly but more greatly contribute to global warming prevention by the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions through a high effect of energy conservation as a thermal insulator. Therefore, the thermal insulator with these technologies is valuable for environmental protection. And as the needs for a material for better energy conservation will increase, the contribution of this technology will expand much more in the future.

Gold (Au) nanoparticles having a Pt-shell layer (Au-Pt) deposited on a conductive support are a promising electrocatalyst for fuel cells for in order to minimize the use of Pt. We describe a facile one-pot method to grow Au-Pt having a 3.8-nm diameter on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) without using any reducing agent, in which polybenzimidazole was used as the binding sites on the MWNTs to load the Au-Pt.

We report the synthesis of mononuclear nonheme manganese(V)–oxo complexes in aqueous acetonitrile solution from the reaction of manganese(III) complexes using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant for the first time. A crystal structure of chloro derivative of manganese(V)–oxo complex and its reactivity toward 3,5-di-tert-butyl-catechol are also reported.

Highly convergent syntheses of substituted carbazoles are most conveniently achieved using organometallic chemistry. Construction of the carbazole framework via the iron-mediated route proceeds by a sequence of C–C and C–N bond formation. In the highly efficient palladium-catalyzed route the C–N bond is formed first followed by generation of the C–C bond. This article highlights some recent developments and applications to the total synthesis of biologically active carbazole alkaloids.
