The detection properties of alkanes by proton-transfer-reaction plus switchable reagent ion mass spectrometry (PTR + SRI-MS) were investigated. Alkanes (RH) were commonly detected as R+ by PTR + SRI-MS using NO+ as the reagent ion, and detection sensitivities were comparable to those of aromatics observed by H3O+ ionization. It can be concluded that sensitive online measurement of multiple alkanes is possible by PTR + SRI-MS using NO+ as the reagent ion.

The crystal structure analysis of glycerol was revisited and the hydrogen atoms of three hydroxy groups were observed. A hydrogen-bonded 3D network structure of glycerol was created by the formation of a wave-like sheet structure and its assembly through hydrogen bonding.

We evaluated the frictional force between two finger models that mimic properties of fingertips. Friction dynamics were drastically changed with the presence of fingerprints and variations in sliding speed and vertical force. For example, a periodic variation of the frictional force was observed under slow sliding conditions between finger models with fingerprint-like rough surfaces.

We developed a friction evaluation system with a human finger model. The surface of the model was covered with imitation fingerprints. When a polypropylene surface was rubbed against the finger model, the friction profile varied with the sliding velocity and vertical force.

The creation of artificial three-dimensional (3D) tissues possessing structure and function similar to natural tissue is a key challenge for implantable tissues in tissue engineering, and for model tissues in pharmaceutical assays. This account is a summary of our current research toward this challenge. We have developed a simple and unique bottom-up approach, hierarchical cell manipulation technique, using nanometer-sized layer-by-layer films consisting of fibronectin and gelatin (FN–G) as a nano-extracellular matrix (nano-ECM). The FN–G nanofilms were prepared directly on the cell surface, and we discovered that at least 6 nm thick FN–G films acted as a stable adhesive surface for adhesion of the second cell layer. Various 3D-layered constructs consisting of single or multiple types of cells were successfully fabricated, and the higher cellular activities induced from the 3D-structures as compared to monolayer structure were observed. Furthermore, the multilayered constructs like a blood vessel wall structure indicated almost the same drug response as in vivo natural blood vessels, suggesting the possibility to use as an in vitro blood vessel model to analyze drug response. Recently, we also developed a rapid bottom-up approach by a single cell coating using FN–G nanofilms, because the fabrication of two-layers (2L) is limited through the above technique due to the time required for stable cell adhesion. This rapid approach easily provided approximately eight-layered (8L) 3D-tissues after only one day of incubation. The layer number, cell type, and location were all successfully controlled by altering the seeding cell number and order. Moreover, fully and homogeneously vascularized tissues of 1 cm width and 50 µm height were obtained by a sandwich culture of the endothelial cells. These hierarchical cell manipulations will be promising to achieve one of the dreams of biomedical field, in vitro creation of artificial 3D-tissue models.

A theoretical study on a tripodal alkoxydipshophine ligand (POP), which accelerates the nickel-catalyzed monosubstitution of a polyfluoroarene with an organozinc reagent, revealed that the alkoxy group and the diphosphine act independently to facilitate cooperation of a Lewis acid and a transition metal.

Chiral bis(1,10-phenanthroline) with Tröger’s base skeleton (1) was synthesized from 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline with formaldehyde and HCl. Racemic 1 could interact with DNA from CD spectroscopy and could cleave DNA when it was complexed with copper(I).

We observed the drying process of Pickering emulsions with a microscope. In the case of water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions stabilized by common surfactants, the emulsion droplets shrunk while maintaining their spherical shapes. On the other hand, in the case of w/o emulsions stabilized by solid particles, wrinkles occurred and expanded on the droplet surfaces. The colorant dissolved in the water phase remained in a wide area after drying.

We found self-motion and accelerated dissolution of a fatty acid particle at the oil–water interface. The dissolution time at the interface was 15–20 times shorter than that in the oil phase. The driving force of the self-motion and the accelerated dissolution is the Marangoni flow induced by the spatial heterogeneity of a fatty acid layer at the oil–water interface.

In the present study, ten metal free dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been designed. These dyes have designed by structural modification of TC4. Density functional theory was used for structure optimization and determination of photo-physical properties. These dyes contain triphenylamine as electron-donor and cyanoacrylic acid as acceptor. Five π-spacers are used to connect the donor and acceptor. Two auxiliary donors are also used to assist the donor. Results of this study indicate that stronger electron-donating auxiliary groups and longer π-conjugation enhance, while electron-withdrawing fluorine at a π-spacer decreases the performance of dyes in DSSC. As compared to auxiliary electron-donors, π-spacers have a strong impact on the performance of the dyes in the DSSCs. Major absorption peaks of all dyes were in the visible region. These absorption peaks are associated with the π-π* transitions of the entire molecule. From calculations it is clear that all dyes will be good photosensitizers in DSSC. The present calculations will provide new ways for experimentalists to synthesize high-performance dyes.

An isotope of element 104, rutherfordium (261Rf), produced in the 248Cm(18O, 5n)261Rf reaction was successfully extracted to a chemistry laboratory using a gas-jet transport system coupled to the RIKEN gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS. The present system is a promising interface to explore new frontiers in superheavy element chemistry.

Electrophilic substitution reactions of sumanene were studied. Mono-, di-, and trisubstituted sumanenes were selectively prepared with the separation of all regioisomers. The regioselectivity was predicted well by the HOMO density values determined by DFT calculations.

A method of synthesizing 2-iminoindolines using samarium diiodide (SmI2) is reported. In the presence of tert-butyl alcohol, treatment of carbodiimides bearing α,β-unsaturated carbonyl moieties with a stoichiometric amount of SmI2 afforded 2-iminoindolines in moderate to high yields. The products were isolated after Boc protection of the amidine moieties. This reaction proved to be applicable to lactams and acyclic/cyclic esters as substrates.

A series of 2,3-diphenylphenanthro[9,10-b]furans were prepared by the reactions of phenanthrene-9,10-dione with two equivalents of benzylidenetriphenylphosphoranes as a key step. The bis(4-bromophenyl) derivative can be readily lithiated by the action of n-butyllithium in diethyl ether. The corresponding 4-trimethylsilyl and 4-methylthio derivatives were obtained by quenching the dilithio derivative with trimethylsilyl chloride and dimethyl disulfide, respectively. The Buchwald–Hartwig amination of the bromide with diphenylamine afforded the diphenylamino derivative in a good yield. Crystallographic analysis of the parent diphenyl derivative reveals that the phenanthrofuran moiety has a slightly twisted helicene-like structure, and the compound forms a columnar stacking in the crystal. The phenanthrofurans display intense blue fluorescence both in CH2Cl2 and in the solid state. Their electrochemical properties obviously indicate high HOMO energy levels of the furans, as predicted by the density functional theory calculations.

Nonmonotonous temperature dependence, which suggests formation of closed oligomer(s) via hydrogen-bonds, is detected in heat capacity and dielectric constant of the title compound in the liquid state. The 1H NMR signal of hydroxy protons showed a temperature-dependent fine structure. Quantum-chemical calculations on oligomers of several types revealed that the fine structure is plausibly interpreted as a temperature-dependent formation/destruction of oligomers. A coherent analysis of calorimetric, FT-IR, dielectric, and 1H NMR results shows that the neat liquid of the title compound consists mostly of closed (square) tetramers via H-bonds at lower temperatures, and oligomers with open (or straight) H-bonding and non-H-bonding (monomer) at higher temperature.
