Here we show that petroleum can be formed efficiently at normal temperatures and pressures from carbon dioxide and activated water. The oxygen nano-bubble containing water was treated with TiO2 catalysis under UV irradiation. The activated water was mixed vigorously with kerosene or light oil and carbon dioxide to form an emulsion. The emulsion gradually separated into a two-phase solution. After phase separation, the volume of kerosene or light oil, depending on which oil was utilized, increased by 5 to 10 %.

A facile chromatographic method for purification of pinacol boronic esters has been developed. Impregnation of silica gel with boric acid was effective both for thin layer chromatography (TLC) and for flash column chromatography. Purification of a series of pinacol boronic esters was successful by suppressing loss of the compounds due to over-adsorption.

As details of exciting photonic and electronic properties arising from self-assembled functional dyes and related π-conjugated molecules become clearer, strategies for control of short and long-range chromophore–chromophore orientations, regulation of π–π stacking arrangements, construction of self-organized nano-to-microscale architectures, diversification of materials properties, analysis of self-assembly pathways, and impartment of stimuli-responsive properties, are all becoming important issues in the research area of organic functional materials. This article focuses on the supramolecular assemblies of dyes and related π-conjugated systems whose organization processes are rationally controlled by complementary multiple hydrogen bonding (CMHB) interactions between melamine and barbituric acid/cyanurate functional units. The article includes an overview of the construction principle of such systems, but special attention is focused on the work carried out in the authors’s group (since 2002) using azobenzene, diarylethene, merocyanine, perylene bisimide dyes, and π-conjugated oligomers including oligo(p-phenylenevinylene), oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene), and oligothiophenes. The design principles discussed in this account could open up new avenues to novel functional aspect and application of functional dyes and small-molecular π-conjugated systems.

In this article, recent developments regarding the organometallic chemistry of boron-containing pincer ligands are reviewed. Boron-based pincer ligands can be subdivided into two main classes, which are based on either diazaborole or carborane. All the papers relevant to such boron-based pincer ligands that have been published since 2009 are included in this review, which also summarizes applications of transition metal complexes containing such boron-containing pincer ligands in catalytic and/or bond-cleavage reactions.

For the cesium carbonate-catalyzed α-phenylthiolation of carbonyl compounds with diphenyl disulfide, the yields of the α-phenylthio carbonyl compounds were dramatically improved by the addition of a catalytic amount of diphenyl diselenide.

It is well known that there are nine stereoisomers of inositol that are composed of seven achiral compounds with a pair of enantiomers. However, there is no report regarding larger inositol homologs, contiguously substituted cycloalkane polyols; therefore, the numbers of stereoisomers of such compounds are unknown. This study provides a simple method to calculate the number of stereoisomers of inositol homologs with any carbon number. The established formulae may be useful in attracting novice students to the field of organic chemistry.

A convenient protection-free synthetic route toward alkyl glycosides has been developed. The alcoholysis of one-step preparable glycosyl donors, 4,6-dibenzyloxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl (DBT) glycosides, under hydrogenolytic conditions gave the corresponding glycosides in good yields without adding any acid promoters. The method could be successfully applied to the glycosylation of an acid-labile oligosaccharide.

We report the first example of a µ-η1:η1-N2 dinuclear RuII complex with a polyamine ligand and elucidate the structure by means of X-ray analysis. The N≡N stretching vibration has been observed at 1994 cm−1 by Raman spectroscopy, which is the lowest value of all the known N2-coordinated RuII complexes. This low value strongly suggests the N≡N bond is primed for activation.

A novel dinuclear iron(II) complex [{Fe(py3COH)(NCS)(μ-NCS)}2](PrOH)2 was prepared. Each Fe ion is coordinated with three N atoms from tridentate tris(2-pyridyl)methanol (py3COH) and two N and one S atoms from NCS− coligand. It showed a one-step gradual spin-crossover at T1/2 = 207 K. This compound is the first spin-crossover material having an FeN5S coordination structure.

It has been established that a cationic rhodium(I)/H8-BINAP complex catalyzes the [2+2+2] cycloaddition of cyclohexadiene-linked 1,7-diynes with monoynes to produce functionalized benzobarrelenes. Functionalized azabenzobarrelenes were also obtained by using BINAP as a ligand and nitriles as coupling partners.

Five easy, relatively inexpensive, and environmentally-safe aromatic oxidative iodination procedures are presented; three of them are particularly suitable for deactivated arenes. Nine deactivated arenes, four halobenzenes, benzene, toluene, and N,N-dimethylaniline were reacted upon with the following anhydrous systems: diiodine/NaIO4 or (in four cases) NaIO3/acetic anhydride/glacial acetic acid, acidified with varying amounts of concd (98%) sulfuric acid; the following workups are explained. The aromatic oxidative iodination reactions proceeded mostly at room temperature and within 1—8 h to give fifteen mono- and two diiodinated purified products (sometimes obtained in 2—3 different ways) in 51—95% yields.

In order to understand the binding nature of the glycosylamines possessing imine functionality, a novel tetranuclear Ni(II) complex of N-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-4,6-O-ethylidene-β-D-glucopyranosylamine having twisted Ni4O4 cubane core was synthesized and structurally characterized.

The friction behaviors of water and aqueous solutions of thickener were evaluated between a contact probe with a striped rough surface and a substrate. When the probe surface is flat, the contact states are the boundary lubrication and fluid film lubrication states for water and the thickener aqueous solutions, respectively. In contrast, for the contact probe with a striped rough surface, friction occurred under fluid lubrication state for both water and thickener solutions. These results indicate that the liquid in the depression on the striped rough surfaces changes the regime of friction.

A Poisson–Boltzmann continuum solvation model coupled with ab initio quantum calculation was developed for 1-octanol. It was applied to the calculation of the solvation free energies of various solutes consisting of C, H, and O in 1-octanol and their 1-octanol/water partition coefficients.

The distribution of surface tension on the front and rear sides of a camphor boat continuously moving on an aqueous-phase camphor solution was observed by the time-resolved quasi-elastic laser scattering method. The uniform motion of the boat was induced by a difference in the surface tension between the front and rear sides. A surface-tension gradient developed along the rear side, resulting in Marangoni convection that decelerated the boat.

The dichroism in the visible and ultraviolet region has been quantitatively determined at room temperature by Tsuchida and Kobayashi’s microscopic method with a single crystal of d, l-[Co en3] Cl3·3H2O, d, l- [Co en3] Br3·3H2O, d- [Co en3] Br3·2H2O and d, l-[Cr en3] Cl3·3H2O.It has been found that the [Co en3]3+ and the [Cr en3]3+ ion show a similar type of dichroism. For both the complex ions, the z-absorption is slightly stronger than the x-absorption in the wavelength region of the first absorption band and much weaker than the x-absorption in the region of the second absorption band.The results of the measurements are discussed in relation to the electronic state and the optical rotatory dispersion of the complex ions.

In an attempt to develop a totally synthetic, self-regulated insulin delivery system to treat diabetes, N-substituted poly(acrylamide) copolymer gels bearing boronate functionality have been chemically optimized so as to undergo an abrupt and glucose-dependent change in hydration. This study highlights an importance of fine-tuning the mesh size of the gel relative to that of insulin in order to achieve the better controlled-release in a manner less sensitive to the temperature, even with an apparently marginal change of hydration.

We have investigated the spreading process of oil-in-water emulsions containing oleic acid droplets on flat and rough fractal agar gel surfaces. Significant spreading inhibition owing to local condensation of oil droplets is observed on flat agar gel surfaces. On the other hand, such inhibition is not observed on the fractal gel surfaces for any of the emulsions. The rough structure of the gel surfaces is an important factor of spreading dynamics of emulsions on surfaces.

Recent developments in aryne chemistry are reviewed with a particular focus on synthetic methods. This includes an overview of the precursors of arynes and their activators; the generation of arynes with functional groups and their ensuing reactivities; and the novel transformations achieved via aryne intermediates. These newly developed methods have enabled the synthesis of a variety of previously inaccessible aromatic compounds, allowing the construction of a diversity-enriched chemical library that will further facilitate future drug discoveries.
