This paper describes the summary of structural design method and construction procedures of ″Edo-Tokyo Museum″ constructed at Ryogoku site, Tokyo, in march 1993. The unique outlook of the building is derived from the origin of Japanese trailitional housing style. In order to make such unique design realize, several new procedures and consept have been developed. One of the important elements for the construct ion process is welding procedure for the steel joint. As the most reasonable and real istic method, field electroslag welding method was newly adopted.

For reconsideration of the corrosion protect at the interior of a steel box girder we reserch a corrosion environment of the interior of a steel box girder at Hakucho Bridge (at Hokkaido). This bridge i s composed of two box girders of which the interior as well as the exterior was not painted on the basis of the local design specifications. In one of the two box girders, a dehumidification plant was installed and has been operated for one and half year. We report about the experiment, and measurements of a temperature and a humidity, a working condition of the dehumidifier, an example of ACM corrosion sensor's output.

The purpose of present study is to propose the approximate technique taking deflection of foundation girders and pile-soil into consideration for structural analysis. Separation of the upper structure from the pile-soil structure is the practical method in case of structural frames with foundation girders constructed from reinforced concrete of high stiff ness, but it isn't a general method in case of foundation girders of finite rigidity. In the pres ent analysis, two approximations are applied, and those enable to separate the analysis of the upper structure from that of the pile-soil structure. This is proposed as a new approximation method of rotation-rigidity.

In order to establish the ultimate state design, it should be veri fied the mechanical properties of tension members as well as compression members in the ultimate state. In this paper, resting on this viewpoint, tension tests on notched plates were carried out to investigate the influence of mechanical properties of materials and stress concentration on the plastic deformation capacity, and to clarify the mecanical characteristics of tension members. And a practical formula is proposed to evaluate the plastic deformation capacity of tension members. Moreover, it is also clarified the parameter to control the plastic deformation fields of tension members in the ultimate state.

This paper reports on the studies concerning Fire Resistant steel for building construction, both in the aspect of steelmaking in the development of steel products and in the aspect of high-temperature strength properties of steel products, joints (high-strength bolts) and structural members, while illustrating the usefulness of Fire Resistant steel by citing an example of a fire-safe design of a high-rise building using Fire Resistant steel without fire protection.

Fatigue fracture or delayed fracture often occurs at the threaded portion or the underhead fillet of high-strength bolts where the stress concentrates. In order to reduce the stress-concentration at the threaded portion, we have already proposed the improved thread shape. In this paper, the cone shape head is proposed to reduce the stress-concentration at the underhead fillet. The efficiency of this shape is analyzed by the FEM in which the parameters are the radius of the fillet and the angle of the bearing surface at the underhead.

The present situations of design and construction on concrete filled steel tubular structures in Japan are described. The outlines of research works conducted in Kyushu University, such as the elasto-plastic behaviors of frames, the ultimate strength and deformation capacity of members, the limiting values of width(diameter)-tothickness ratio of cross sections, the stability and strength of slender columns, and the behaviors of truss frames are discussed. The design strengths of columns based on several foreign design standards are compared with Japanese design strength.

The treatment of connections largely influences the taste of visual impression of a bridge. This paper discuss the detail design of a bridge relating with its total form. Firstly two design trends are shown through the review on recent works and documents that are monocoque style and multilevel composition one. Then four fine works, Tatsumi-shinbashi, Haneda-sky-arch, which are examples of monocoque style, Bach de Roda Felipe II br, and Lusitania br, designed by S.Calatrava as the examples of multilevel composition style, are analyzed into visual elements and connections. Then the each characteristic order in composition and the role of detail design are shown.

In this paper, the damping characteristics of the Old Tacoma Narrows Bridge which was collapsed in 1940 by wind is discussed based on the energy evaluation method. The damping values of the destroyed bridge are analyzed to grasp the contribution of dissipation energy from each construction components of the bridge. The structural damping is also discussed by using loss factors of the steel bridge which was identified by full scale measurements. From these calculation results, some pieces of useful information for the damping characteristics are obtained to reconsider the aerodynamic stability of the Old Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
