According to traditional corrective education, sincere and emotional interaction is effective in changing prisoners' personalities. However, some recent studies insist that certain psychological operations such as counseling are not effective and occasionally have a negative effect on rehabilitation. In this study, on the other hand, we predicted that keeping public order by treating prisoners with fairness is effective. We asked prisoners to rate staff at their correctional institution, to describe their attitude toward decisions made there, and to give their view of public order in society. We found that fair treatment of prisoners promotes acceptance of investigation results regarding violations or punishments, volition of rehabilitation after release, and internalization of public order. Furthermore, we confirmed that fairness by staff indicates to prisoners that public order within the institution is being maintained.

Thibaut & Walker (1975) argued that disputants perceive fairness and are satisfied through a procedure which is easy to control because they intend to maximize their interests in a civil action. In such a theory, it is considered that the nature of procedural justice which disputants feel is satisfaction with the self-interest. However, in this study, we predicted that people would distinguish concern for procedural justice from concern for self-interest. The disputant's concern for self-interest would not be unlimited and the impression that the benefit is maximized within fair procedure would repress their feeling of relative deprivation and promote their acceptance of the result. We conducted research on people who engaged in a trial as disputants of civil actions and made an analysis of advantageous respondents, disadvantageous respondents, juridical persons, natural humans, and all respondents. It was confirmed that procedural justice promotes acceptance of a result through the restraint of relative deprivation.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of treatments by authority in procedure. On the basis of a group-value model and the models that derive from them about procedural justice, group members are interested in group procedure to confirm their identity based on the group. We asked office employees working in a university to rate their superiors fairness and their group-oriented attitude in their organization. We found that a superior's appropriate treatment promotes employees'perception of procedural justice when the employees firmly expected to derive long-term profit in organization, while it promoted the employees' group identity in general. The evidence indicates that people are interested in group procedure because they are not only motivated to confirm their membership but also wish to maintain their group which offers them long-term profit.

The purpose of this research was to examine disputant's cognitive processes in a civil suit empirically. We analyzed the data which was gathered by The Judicial Reform Council. We assumed that a disputant who wishes to reduce costs for suit often chooses settlement procedure in the judicial process and who thinks highly of the judge is more likely to accept judge's proposition. Although we could not confirm the effect of cost anxiety, the results suggested that a good impression forward the judge promotes reaching settlement. It was also suggested that corporations are apt to compound more than natural persons. In addition, analysis of effect of settlement indicated that reaching settlement promotes acceptance, agreement and satisfaction about unfavorable outcomes.
