Ikedosoma elegans (Ikeda, 1904) (Annelida: Echiura: Thalassematidae) is a rare, large deep-burrowing spoon worm that has been observed only in Japan. This species was first described based on the specimens collected from Misaki, Sagami Bay (Kanagawa Prefecture), eastern Japan, in 1902. Since the first description, this species has not been collected until the recent studies, which reported that I. elegans was collected from Hamana Lake (Shizuoka Prefecture), Boso Peninsula (Chiba Prefecture), and probably Amakusa, Ariake Sea (Kumamoto Prefecture). Furthermore, the specimen collected from Takasu, Seto Inland Sea (Okayama Prefecture) in 1975 was identified to be I. elegans. In this study, we present a new locality of this species in Japan. We collected a large individual of I. elegans with a probably commensal scale worm (Polynoidae: Polynoinae) by using a yabby pump in a mud flat in the Doki River Estuary, which is facing the Seto Inland Sea, in Marugame (Kagawa Prefecture), northern Shikoku Island. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first record of I. elegans from Shikoku Island and the second record from the Seto Inland Sea, following a 42-year-old record from Takasu, Okayama.

The gobies Eutaeniichthys gilli and Gymnogobius scrobiculatus were collected from burrows of the mud shrimp Upogebia yokoyai at low tide by digging and using a yabby pump from April 2007 to September 2008 at Susaki Bay, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. A total of 144 E. gilli and 103 G. scrobiculatus were collected. Densities of E. gilli and G. scrobiculatus collected by digging were 1.4 and 1.0 ind. per 0.25 m2, respectively. Symbiotic prevalences of E. gilli and G. scrobiculatus in mud shrimp burrows (the percentage of burrows occupied by E. gilli and G. scrobiculatus) collected using the yabby pump were 2.7% and 2.6%, respectively. Juveniles of E. gilli were collected in June; juveniles of G. scrobiculatus were collected in April. Adults of both species were collected year round. The present study clearly shows that E. gilli and G. scrobiculatus both use Upogebia burrows at low tide. In order to conserve these threatened and near-threatened gobies, conservation of this habitat as well as the mud shrimp might be needed.

Pseudopinnixa carinata (Crustacea: Decapoda: Varunidae) is a monotypic rare brachyuran endemic to the Japanese coast. Seventeen specimens of the crab were collected from tidal flats in Yamaguchi and Kochi Prefectures, Japan. The collection from Kochi Prefecture sets a new record from the Pacific coast of Shikoku. A review of P. carinata collection sites and the habitat information revealed that the species is widely distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, but has never been collected in the Ryukyu Islands and southern Kyushu. This crab inhabits intertidal to subtidal sandy sediments with its deepest record being at 55 m depth. Several studies have shown that the crab was collected from sediments where burrowing invertebrates were abundant. Crabs have been found inside burrows of the echiuran Urechis unicinctus, the gebiidean shrimp Upogebia sakaii, and the axiidean shrimp Nihonotrypaea japonica by digging sediments. In this study, some specimens were pulled out from the burrows of N. japonica and other callianassid shrimp species as well as those of the polychaete Arenicola brasiliensis by yabby pumps.

The scale worm Hesperonoe hwanghaiensis Uschakov and Wu, 1959 (Annelida: Polynoidae) is recorded from eastern Japan, based on four specimens collected from Akkeshi Bay, Hokkaido, and Kashima-nada, Ibaraki Prefecture. In Akkeshi Bay, three specimens (body length of a complete specimen: 40 mm, body width without parapodia: 4.0–4.5 mm), which are the largest of all Japanese specimens including previous records, were found from mud and sand sediments at intertidal flats, where a mud shrimp Upogebia major (De Haan, 1841) was collected simultaneously. In Kashima-nada, a complete mature male specimen (body length: 23 mm, body width without parapodia: 2.7 mm) was collected by dredging at subtidal sandy bottom at a water depth of 7.6 m, where another mud shrimp Austinogebia narutensis (Sakai, 1986) was collected simultaneously. The morphological characteristics of these specimens basically agreed with those of the previous records on the specimens collected from western Japan, with a diagnostic characteristic of the presence of a row of the more conical macrotubercles (up to 28 in an elytron of the complete specimen from Akkeshi Bay, and up to 3 in that from Kashima-nada) on the posterior surface of the elytra in the larger specimen. The present result suggests that the scale worm is commensal with not only U. major but also A. narutensis in its habitats extending from intertidal flats in semi-enclosed inner bays to subtidal bottom in open coasts.

Eight specimens of a threatened goby, Gymnogobius macrognathos (30.04– 38.87 mm in standard length), were collected on a mudflat characterized by abundant burrows of Upogebia major, at Akkeshi, Hokkaido, northern Japan in August 2017. Because G. macrognathos specimens were collected directly from U. major burrows by suction pump, and were also collected with U. major by digging sediment exposed at low tide, it was concluded that G. macrognathos utilized U. major burrows on the tidal flat. Gymnogobius mororanus and an unidentified species of Gymnogobius also utilized U. major burrows. The presence of G. macrognathos at Akkeshi represents the northernmost record of the species in Japanese waters, the isolated population being ca. 500 km north of the main distributional range of the species along the Pacific coast of Japan.
