Neocaridina denticulata (Decapoda: Atyidae) is a freshwater shrimp with a land-locked life-history and is widely distributed in western Japan. The taxonomic confusion of this species, caused by the loss of type specimens, unknown type locality, and genetic and morphological geographical variation, has led to inconveniences in biodiversity conservation and the identification of exotic species that recently invaded Japan. Therefore, it is important to clarify this species’ distributional range and regional genetic and morphological characteristics to solve the problem. Here we report the first record of N. denticulata from Fukue-jima Island in the Goto Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Morphological analyses identified the population as N. denticulata, and mitochondrial DNA-based analyses suggested that the population was distinctly differentiated from the Kyushu populations. This population is essential for inferring the N. denticulata distribution formation and biota formation processes in the Goto Islands. On Fukue-jima Island, N. denti­culata has only been found in one pond; thus, the Fukue-jima population is likely to be in critical condition.

Four decapod crustaceans, Heterocarpus fascirostratus Yang, Chan & Kumar, 2018 (Caridea: Pandalidae), Uroptychus imparilis Baba, 2018 (Anomura: Chirostylidae), Munidopsis similior Baba, 1988 (Anomura: Munidopsidae) and Euryxanthops flexidentatus Garth & Kim, 1983 (Brachyura: Xanthidae) are reported on the basis of specimens collected from the Sea of Hyuga, Kyushu, western Japan, by local off shore commercial trawlers. Munidopsis similior and E. flexidentatus are recorded for the first time from Japan. Images showing living coloration are given for each species. Detailed descriptions and supplemental illustrations are provided for M. similior and E. flexidentatus to show evidence of identification.

A mantis shrimp species of the family Nannosquillidae, Pullosquilla pardus (Moosa, 1991), is reported from the Ogasawara and Ryukyu Islands. This report represents the first record of P. pardus from the Japanese waters. The record from Anijima, Ogasawara Islands, expands the distributional range of the species to the north.

Tachaea chinensis (Isopoda: Corallanidae) is an ectoparasitic isopod that is sporadically reported from East Asia. Freshwater prawns and shrimps are characteristic hosts. Two specimens of unidentified crustacean collected at Lake Kasumigaura in 1915 were identified as T. chinensis. The specimens were originally kept at the Center for Ecological Research, Kyoto University and are now maintained at the Kyoto University Museum. To the best of my knowledge, these two specimens represent the oldest example of T. chinensis in Japan. The specimens are assumed to have been collected by N. Annandale. Other specimens collected at the same time were entrusted to W.M. Tattersall and reported in 1921. The specimens, collected over 100 years ago, are important in understanding biodiversity and environmental changes.

This paper described female guarding avoidance behaviors against precopulatory guarding attempts by males and examines the effect of the number of days until female prenuptial molting on rejection behaviors in the hermit crab Pagurus nigrofascia. We used three types of females in an experiment; (1) ovigerous females (OV–female), (2) females which had not been guarded in the field (NG–female), and (3) females which had been guarded by other males in the field (G–female). We placed a male that had been solitary and a female of either type in a small container, observed the interaction, and compared the female behaviors among the three types of female. The frequencies of retreat and escape from approaching male were highest in OV–females, and lowest in G–females. During male assessment behaviors of females, frequencies of struggle and escape in OV– and G–females were higher than NG–females. 33 of 51 G–females were guarded by males although OV– and NG–females were rarely guarded by males. Many G–females showed rejection behavior during male guarding. However, no significant effect was found in the number of days until the female prenuptial molt on the frequencies of rejection behavior.

Alpheus dolichodactylus Ortmann, 1890 burrows muddy tidal flats, recorded from inshore coastal areas in central to southwestern Japan. Because of abrupt loss of habitats caused by human activities, the conservation status of the species is ranked as NT in the Japanese Red List. For example, the syntype of the species consists of 15 specimens from the Tokyo Bay, but there have been no records of the species since the original description from the Tokyo Bay and adjacent areas. In this study, we report on the occurrence of three specimens of A. dolichodactylus from small muddy tidal flat at the river mouth of the Heguri River in the Tatetama Bay, southern part of the Boso Peninsula, located at the outer part of the Tokyo Bay, represent the rediscovery of the species from the Tokyo Bay and adjacent areas by 129 years since the collection of the syntype. We also provide a description of the habitats where our specimens were collected. Maintenance of muddy substrate at estuarine areas will contribute to recovery of local population of the species.

On 9 November 2016, an unknown Cambaridae crayfish was collected from the outflow stream of Matsubara Izumi along the Shigenobu River in western Japan. On the basis of COI and 12S rRNA analyses, we identified the crayfish as the Marmorkrebs (Procambarus fallax f. virginalis), which serves as the first record for this species from western Japan. The Marmorkrebs is widely available across Japan through the aquarium pet trade. Because the parthenogenic Marmorkrebs has high potential to impact biodiversity, fisheries, and rice farming in Japan through rapid proliferation, transmission of diseases, and herbivory, we call for urgent management plans to restrict the import, movement, and release of this crayfish.
