In this paper I examine the current 'boom' in Japanese literary retranslations, in which translators and publishers alike promote alternative theories, strategies and publication policies. I also consider various criticisms and readers' responses. In order to fathom out this current boom in retranslation, I scrutinize external discourses such as reviews and critiques, as well as consider what translation norms are suggested and how those norms are constructed. The external discourses consist of critiques and reviews of the recently published Japanese retranslations of Le Rouge et Le Noir and The Brothers Karamazov. These critiques highlight not only the conflicting ideas on translation, but a shift in the paradigm, in which the actual competing elements of the conflict are different than those of the past.

A huge number of English literary works have been translated by many Japanese scholars of English Literary Studies. By producing and criticising translations as well as by conducting research into English literature, these academics have constructed norms governing these translations. In the early Showa era, while the dominant norm consisted of the pursuit of fidelity to the original, the artistic and creative aspects of translation gradually became emphasised in discussions of translation. In this paper I examine the 'negotiation' of norms for translating English literature embodied in translation criticism by English literary scholars in the early Showa era. I will also explore how English Literary Studies and a socio-cultural situation exerted an influence on the negotiation of the translation norms.

The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between Japanese translations of English literature, English literary studies, and socio-cultural current of thought in the Meiji era in Japan. Having been translated by academic researchers, the Japanese translations of English literature have apparently been governed by the academia of English literary studies. Also, the academia has been developed as an institutionalised system under Japan's ideology of striving for Westernisation. In order to demonstrate how translations of English literature, English literary studies and socio-cultural aspects were intertwined with each other, this paper explores the following three steps: descriptions of the forewords of some Japanese translations from Shakespeare's works; analysis of how the concept of translation depicted in the forewords was closely associated with the development and the status of the English literary studies of the time; analysis of how the relationship between the translations and the academia was socio-culturally governed by the current of thought of the time. As a result of the analysis of the three steps, the paper aims to clarify the relationship between translations of English literature, English literary studies and socio-cultural current of thought.
