Shoemaker presented a theory of properties according to which there are no metaphysically possible worlds that are not causally possible, because the causal powers of properties are essential to them. The theory apparently has the consequence that the range of metaphysically possible worlds is considerably narrower than has normally been thought. On closer inspection, however, it seems to leave open the possibility that there are possible worlds with "alien" properties that are not instantiated in the actual world, those properties being governed by laws that do not govern actual world properties. This paper examines whether this possibility is a serious threat to Shoemaker's theory, and concludes that it may indeed be.

This paper looks at how we make decisions in the face of plural values, and explores its implications for our conception of practical reason. Specifically, the idea that our choice is governed by what I call “decision-theoretic rationality”, which has been influential among decision theorists and some “interpretationist” philosophers, will thoroughly be criticized as not being capable of explaining the difficulties characteristic of choosing among alternatives which bear different kinds of value. The paper concludes by suggesting that our understanding of practical reason needs to be reformed, in a way that appropriately captures those difficulties.

In “Free Agency,” Gary Watson distinguished two aspects of wanting something, namely, to evaluate it as good, and to be motivated to pursue it. In the same paper, he also paid attention to the distinction between satisfying a desire and getting rid of a desire. In the introductory part of this essay, I will present a characterization of the phenomenon of weakness of will that depends on the distinction between evaluation and motivation. In the main part, I will examine the role that the distinction between satisfying a desire and getting rid of it can play in circumstances where an agent exercises techniques of self-control in order to avoid succumbing to weak-willed action. The aim of this essay is to show that the evaluational judgment of an agent can be efficacious in important ways in leading the agent to action.
