Questionnaire to ask “mention three names of scientists you know” and “three names of engineers you know” was conducted and the answers from 140 adults were analyzed. The results indicated that the image of scientists is represented by Nobel laureates and that of engineers by great inventors like Thomas Edison and industry founders like Soichiro Honda. In order to reveal the image of engineers among young generation, questionnaire was conducted for pupils in middle and high schools. Answers from 1,230 pupils were analyzed and 226 names mentioned as engineers were classified. White votes reached 60%. Engineers who are neither big inventors nor company founders collected less than 1% of named votes. Engineers are astonishingly invisible from young generation. Countermeasures are proposed.

For promoting mobility of engineers across borders, there must be frameworks to recognize the equivalence of engineering education and professional registration. The first gate to the mutual recognition is to share common concepts on the relevant matters. In Japan, the image of engineers is almost equivalent to that of engineering practitioners in general. What we have to do first is to revise the public concept of engineers so that the gap between ours and global ones diminishes. International Engineering Meeting has been discussing problems of education and registration and proposed global standards that would be included in the rules and procedures. Concepts and understandings behind the proposal are compared with ours and the measures for improving our global compatibility are discussed.

A detailed study of the fluid moment on a precessing impeller shroud has been made. Experiments and calculations based on a bulk-flow model were carried out to elucidate the unsteady flow between the impeller shroud and the casing. The fluid moment was estimated from the pressure distribution on the impeller shroud in the precession motion. The results of the experiments were compared with those of the calculations. It was found that : (1) the moment largely depends on the leakage flow rate and the pressure loss at the impeller outer radius ; (2) a bulk-flow model incorporating the measured behavior of the pressure loss can simulate the complete leakage flow distribution fairly well ; (3) The fluid moment is mainly caused by the two-dimensional inviscid unsteady flow due to the precession motion.
