本研究の目的は、第一に、大学生が最もイメージする「子ども」の年齢層を調査により定義し、第二に、それに基づき大学生の「子どもへの関心」の程度を測定する尺度を測定し、それに関連する要因を探ることである。まず予備調査として大学生115名に「子ども」として最もイメージする年齢層を尋ねた結果、全体の約67%が「3~6歳の幼児」を挙げた。従って本調査では「子ども」を「(3~6歳の)幼児」と定義して検討した。本調査では、保育学、心理学を専攻する大学生247名を対象とした。その結果、子どもへの関心尺度は「好意的注目」「同情」「好奇心」「寛容性」の4下位尺度から構成されていた。この尺度について信頼性と妥当性を確認した後、関連する要因を検討した結果、幼児との接触経験が多い程、子どもへの関心が高い傾向にあった。また、「好意的注目」「好奇心」では女性の方が得点は高く、専攻別では全下位尺度で保育学専攻の方が得点は高かった。以上のことから、子どもへの関心は幼児との接触経験によって促進され、女性で高く、子どもを扱う学問を専攻する者で高いことが示唆された。

A scale for assessing the inclination for social child-rearing among university students was developed. Social child-rearing is defined as child-rearing not only by the parents but supported by society as a whole. The attitude of supporting this type of child-rearing has been called an “inclination for social child-rearing.” University students (n = 661) filled out a questionnaire and factor analysis results indicated four factors related to an inclination for social child-rearing: an orientation for problem-solving related to children and child-rearing; feelings of avoidance of children and child-rearing; an inclination toward child-rearing at home; and acceptance of the tax burden. In general, the inclination for social child-rearing was higher among women; this inclination was even higher when there were children or other child-rearing people in the participants’ proximity. Correlations with existing scales indicated that the inclination for social child-rearing was higher when social interests, social considerations, and nurturance were higher. These results indicate the concurrent validity of the scale developed in this study.

Correlations between the scores on subscales of the Scale of Interest in Infants and preferences for pictures of infants were investigated. University students (N=27) completed the Scale of Interest in Infants. Then they were shown arrays of three pictures of an infant, an adult, and an object and required to choose the picture that interested them the most. The results indicated that pictures of infants were chosen more often than pictures of adults. Positive correlations were found between scores on the subscales for “affectionate attention” or “curiosity” and preference for pictures of infants. “Sympathy” and “tolerance” were not significantly correlated with preference for pictures of infants.
