本稿は柏木義円(一八六〇~一九三八)同様、上州にあって終生、非戦・平和を訴え続けた牧師・住谷天来の、特に晩年の思想・信仰の一端に迫ろうとした一試論である。具体的には老いた天来が、戦争へとひた走る状況のもと、「孤独と貧窮」に屈せずにその志を屹立させ得たのは何故なのかを問うた。ここでは天来の志を支えた世界として第一に、「悲痛」をめぐる逆説的な信仰を、第二に天来を支えた友情の交流圏の存在を指摘しておきたい。

本稿の対象は、昭和戦前期にカトリック思想家として存在感を放った吉満義彦である。その思想の構造と特質に関しては二〇一一年度に著した論考と、本年度末に公刊される新稿で明らかにした。本稿はそれらの考察を承け、吉満の思想の展開過程を扱ったものである。具体的には吉満の時代認識と、その認識に基づく〈実践〉のありようを解析した。前者については、「生命への渇望」をめぐる実存への理解、時代を席巻する「二十世紀の神話」への内在的批判、ならびにキリスト教信仰に根ざす同時代把握を指摘し、後者については、吉満の宗教的〈実践〉が持ち得た思想的かつ社会的な射程を説いた。
